    E. Excavation for Structures: Excavation shall be made accurately to the lines, grades and elevations shown on the Construction Drawings. CONTRACTORshall provide sufficient dewatering equipment such that there will be no standingor flowing water in excavated areas during construction operations such asplacing concrete or compacting fill. Trenches and foundation pits shall be ofsufficient size to permit the placement and removal of forms for the full length and

width of structure footings and foundation shown on the Construction Drawings.Rock or other hard material shall be cleaned of loose debris and cut to a firmsurface, either level, stepped, or serrated, as shown or as directed. Loosedisintegrated rock and thin strata shall be removed. When concrete or masonryis to be placed in an excavated area, the top of the existing subgrade shall befirmly compacted.

    F. Hand Excavation: Hand excavation will be required for WORK adjacent to theexisting utilities as specified by Company Representative or the utility agency'srequirements.

    G. Proof Rolling: The bottom layer of existing material in any excavation shall beproof rolled with a roller compactor having a gross weight of 8 tons minimum, or

otherwise compacted to the satisfaction of Company Representative prior tobackfilling. Testing of this layer of compaction will not be required, if one or morelayers of fill will be added which will be tested.

    3.02 FILL

    A. Select Fill shall be used for all fill under buildings and for a distance of 3 metersoutside the outer line of the buildings. For other structures it shall be used within600 mm of the bottom elevation of foundations or spread footings and shall beSelect Fill Materials materials as described in Paragraph 2.01, D, of this Section.

    B. Preparation of Ground Surface for Fill: Ground surface on which fill is to beplaced shall be plowed, disked, or otherwise broken up; pulverized; moistened or

aerated as necessary; thoroughly mixed; and proof rolled.

    C. Placing Fill: Fill materials shall be placed in successive horizontal lifts or layersnot to exceed 200 mm in depth. Each layer, before starting the next, shall beleveled and smoothed by means of power driven graders, bulldozers or othersuitable equipment. Hauling and spreading equipment shall be operated over thefull width of each layer

    D. Compaction: All fills shall be compacted to 70 percent relative density as definedby ASTM D4253 and D4254 (for cohesionless materials) or 95 percent of themaximum density determined by ASTM D698 (for cohesive materials).

    1. When the backfill materials cannot clearly be classified as cohesive orcohesionless both relative and proctor density tests must be performed perabove paragraph. The backfill shall then be compacted to the greaterdensity.

    E. Backfilling adjacent to Structures: Backfill shall be placed and compacteduniformly in such a manner as to prevent wedging action or eccentric loadingupon or adjacent the structures. Large compaction equipment (over 1 toncapacity) shall not be used within 3 Meters of any existing structures withoutspecific written approval of Company Representative.

    F. Borrow Pit: Prior to importing borrow materials and/or transporting fill material toWORK Site areas requiring fill, the CONTRACTOR shall submit his laboratorytests supporting the materials qualifications. Company Representative reservesthe right to inspect and make tests of the fill material for conformity with theSpecifications. Fill material which does not meet the requirements ofSpecifications shall not be used and, if on the WORK Site, shall be removed fromthe WORK Site at CONTRACTOR'S expense.

    G. Select Fill shall be used within 600mm of the bottom elevation of foundations, spread footings or slab on grade, and shall be "Select Fill Materials as describedin Paragraph 2.01,D. of this Section.

    3.03 GRADING

    A. General: The surfaces of all excavation, backfilling, compaction, embankments, and subgrades shall be finished reasonably smoothly and compacted inaccordance with the lines, grades and elevations shown on the ConstructionDrawings. The workmanship expected shall be that ordinarily obtained fromcareful blade grader operations. Areas not accessible by power equipment shallbe graded by hand methods to eliminate all surface humps, ridges, anddepressions.

    B. Ditches and Swales: Ditches and swales shall be graded to the acceptance of soas to permit adequate drainage away from buildings, roadway surfaces or flatspots and prevent ponding.

    C. Roadway and Shoulders: Roadway and shoulders shall be given a neat finishgrade and slope away from the roadway centerline as shown on the ConstructionDrawings or as directed by Company Representative.

    D. Sideslopes and Backslopes: All open or exposed roadway or embankmentslopes, shall be dressed to fit into abutting areas by smooth curves and toeliminate all abrupt slope changes, but shall not be steeper than two horizontal toone vertical.

    3.04 COMPACTION TEST

    A. Methods: To verify that the specified degree of compaction has been achieved,CONTRACTOR shall perform in-place density tests ASTM D-1556 or D-2922after compaction of each lift of fill and performed at the top layer and at least onelift thickness below the compacted surface.
