This lesson will introduce the important skills on how to leverage the power search engine, Google to find information on the internet. The internet contains tons of information uploaded by other users and these information will be available to us if we know on how to find it.

Most of us think that we already know on how to use Google search engine due to its simplicity on the design and the quality of results returned by Google search engine.

However, there is a hidden technique ought to be learned by all internet users i.e. Google-Fu techniques. Google-Fu means skill in using search engines (especially Google) to quickly find useful information on the Internet.

Try this keyword and search by using Google search engine: define:google-fu

In the nutshell, there is 10 important Google-Fu skills to search information on the internet i.e. how to search information within specific website how to search specific files how to search within webpages title how to search within webpages text how to search within webpages URL how to search for an exact phrase how to use the Fill-in-the-Blank technique how to search for similar webpage how to search for numbers in range how to search for similar terms

By the end of this lesson, well learn the narrowing down technique to minimize our results to one result only!

But they failed to understand that Google search engine has lots of hidden functions. In this lesson, we will explore this hidden functions that will assist us on searching the right and relevant information.

If we look at the Google search engine interface (www.google.com) as shown in the slide, it extremely simple interface compare to other search engines. We will concentrate only on the search box that accepting all our keywords.

Before we proceed with the next slide, there is two button need to be explained i.e. Google Search button will list down all results related to our keywords Im Feeling Lucky button will automatically open up the first result without list down all the results6Google FoundersAs Googles chief executive officer, Larry Page is responsible for Googles day-to-day-operations, as well as leading the companys product development and technology strategy. As shown in this slide, Google search results returned the indexed information for the keyword of google chrome. Google search engine displays the lists of web pages that comprises of title of web page, text of web page and URL of web page.

This concept is essential to be understood as we need to ask ourselves with these questions: which part of webpage do we want our keywords to be appeared? do we want our keywords to be appeared everywhere?

This technique uses related: operator to find the related web pages to the given website.

By specifying the related: operator to the given website, Google will respond with theresults In which similar to the given website. For instance,If the given website is university website, Google will find other university websiteIf the given website is telco website, Google will find other telco website

The syntax is so simple, just use related:website. Bear in mind that we must use the full address of the website and not part of it.

This technique is intended to expand our vocabulary in search results that is synonymous our keywords. Sometime we did not get the right terminology e.g.celebrity sounds vs. ringtonescheap hotel vs. budget hotel airplane vs. aeronautics

By using tilde (~) sign, Google will interpret our keyword to alternative keyword in our search results. Bear in mind that the syntax is ~keyword with no empty space.

In this exercise, we will explore the narrowing down our search results up to only one result. Before knowing the Google-Fu skills, most of us rely on the keyword to get the search results. However, this method would bring us billions, millions or thousands results. It was really frustrated moment to go through each of the results.

With Google-Fu skills, we have learnt the advanced operators to zoom in where our keywords should show up which section of the web page - title, text or URLwhich location - website, domain or country which file - Microsoft Office Suite, PDF and many more

Let us ask ourselves - How can we get only one result from billions of web pages on the internet?

Google will return the results based the keywords that have been entered. From the indexed web pages in their server. In this case, Google will find any words from these keywords i.e. (Mohamad) , (Nizam), (Kassim)

We observed very significant reduction in the number of results returned by Google search engine compared to the previous search. The difference is Google search engine interpret the keywords differently. Instead of any web pages contains the keywords (Mohamad, Nizam, Kassim), Google search engine will find the exact keywords i.e. Mohamad Nizam Kassim in any web pages.

Question: How we look for our keywords in the specific website?

Answer: From the previous exercise, we know that from the Google search results of Mohamad Nizam Kassim contains web pages from more than one domains. Therefore , we want the results from one domain.

To obtain the search results from one domain:Use site: operator, type Mohamad Nizam Kassim site:cybersecurity.my and press ENTERObserve how many results that you get from Google search engine. (__________ results)

Therefore,

From the Google search results, we observed that Google returned only web pages from cybersecurity.my domain in the format of PDF file which contains the exact phrase of Mohamad Nizam Kassim.
