A New Fresh DesignThe 2020-24 Classification Numbers Have Been Released
The time is now. Thenew four-yearclassification cycle
has been finalized and onthe left is a sneak peak atthe new leaguestructures.
The Big Nine hasunanimously voted tohave all schools play atthe 4A level and therewill be no changes amongany of the members.
The reason why theymade that decision is theguarantee they will gettwo playoff spots eachyear.
4A is the smallestclassification (51 schools)in the state with the newhard-line numbers(1300+) and five schoolsusing the free/reducedoption to drop down.
Overall, 15 schools optedup and another (Newport)opting to 3A for football.
3A (900-1299) explodedinto the second-largestclassification in the statewith 79 schools.
Sixteen schools opted upheaded by Seattle’s MetroLeague (O’Dea, EastsideCatholic, etc.).
2A (450-899) will feature62 schools with the CWACdropping to seven from ten.
Locally, Quincy will join
the 1A Caribou TrailLeague while Toppenishand Wapato will move tothe 1A SCAC.
The old Great NorthernLeague will disappear withall the schools (but 3ACheney) moving to the new2A Greater Spokane Leaguedivision.
Pullman, Clarkston andEast Valley along withWest Valley, will joinShadle Park and Rogers inthe division while NorthCentral will play 2A forfootball only. Deer Park,
rumored to move from 1Ato 2A, will stay at thelower classification.
The SCAC will lose sixteams to the 2B level butwill remain ten strong.
There are 60 teams inthe 1A classification(225-449) overall withBlaine and Eatonvillealso dropping down.
The 2B (105-224) has61 teams. Cle Elum,Goldendale, Granger,Highland, River Viewand Warden will join theEWAC with local schools,White Swan, Mabton andKittitas.
The 1B level (1-104) isthe largest classificationwith 85 schools.
Sunnyside Christian,who was interested inplaying in the 2B EWAC,instead joins 1B District 9(with Yakama Nation,DeSales and LibertyChristian).
Riverside Christian willstay in their same leaguewhile Bickleton joins mostof the Gorge League inmoving to Oregon.
You can bet one thing;that a new adjustment innumbers will be made infour years when theclassification cycle happensagain. �

2020-2024 Classification NumbersThe classification numbers are: 1,300 or more for Class 4A, 900-1,299for 3A, 450-899 for 2A, 225-449 for 1A, 105-224 for 2B and 1-104 for1B.Schools in Class 4A through 1A can choose to reduce its enrollment forevery 1 percent they are above the reduced lunch-rate average. Thepercentage a school can drop caps at 40. The free/reduced average is47%. (B schools can not use the free/reduced numbers.)Below are local schools and their numbers. The first column is theiractual enrollment average. The second column is the free/reducedpercentage. The third column is the adjusted enrollment.
