Are you ready? Be prepared to endureBy Chief Master Sgt. Shawn Hughes437th Airlift Wing command chief

I glanced at my watch, Nov. 16, 2007, 6:22 a.m. ... 23more minutes to go. Sweat dripped from my brow. Thestraps of my 70 pound ruck dug into my shoulders. Ibounced the ruck, tugged and adjusted the straps ... muchbetter. My legs ached as I reached the top. I made anotherhash mark on the FLYN (freaking little yellow note ... apost-it) stuck to the wall, took a deep breath and startedback down the eight flights of stairs, 17 steps per flight,136 steps to the bottom. No headphones, no external dis-tractions ... just me, a ruck, and stairs. It was not quiet. Iwas lost in thought ... my mind raced, monsters inside myhead raged, argued, resolved ... the clash of ideas wasdeafening. At 6:30 a.m. I heard the click and subsequent slam of a stairwelldoor, the familiar sound of boots on linoleum followed by huffing and puff-ing as someone else trudged up behind me. "Morning Sgt. Hughes, what are you doing ... are you deploying?" "No sir." "You have a race coming up?""No sir." "Then what are you doing?" "Getting ready." "For what?" "I don't know." "What do you mean?" "Sir, I have no idea what tomorrow will bring, but whatever it is, I will

be ready." "Uuuuuuuuuuuummmmm ... okay."I heard the third floor stairwell door click behind me, the major was gone

... I was alone. Now it's 6:48 a.m., 1 hour 3 minutes, 27 hash marks, up anddown 216 flights; shirt soaked, physically smoked, mentally stoked ...mind, body, and spirit balanced ... ready.

Fast forward three years. 2100 hours, 103 degrees, just finished a seven mile run. I sat in a steel foldingchair in a trailer at "The Deid" and guzzled two fullwater bottles. Sweat puddled on the floor under thechair, shirt soaked, physically smoked, mentally stoked... mind, body, and spirit balanced ... ready. Two weeks later at a forward operating base in Iraq,

alone in a small three room cinderblock building withbullet pock marks from when the airfield was seizedyears before, zero dark thirty in the morning, 36 hourswithout sleep, four more hours until watch relief, thephone rang. "F-16's have been scrambled from a base inthe south to provide close air support for troops in con-tact, need to launch the alert tanker to support theF-16's." The next 30 minutes were a flurry of activity.

Aircrew and maintenance crews alerted, mission binder prepped, aircrewbriefed, aircraft successfully launched. All quiet again ... the silence wasdeafening. I struggled to stay awake, watched another beautiful Iraq sun-rise, and waited. The last few hours dragged. Finally, I gave thechangeover briefing, skipped the mess tent, the shower, and fell face firstonto my cot ... battle rattle in a pile at the foot of the bed ... physically andmentally smoked. Eight hours of sleep, one-and-a-half hours of PT, showerand shave, a hot meal and two extra-large ice coffees to go, and right backinto the grind. I was ready. The other morning I woke up, ran my favorite eight mile loop, my mind

raced, raged, argued, and resolved; physically smoked, mentally stoked ...mind, body and spirit in balance ... ready. Later that morning a master ser-geant, "I see you running all the time; do you have a race coming up?" Ismiled and said "No, no race, just getting ready."How do you balance your mind, body, and spirit? Will you be ready for

whatever life brings your way? Being ready does not mean you have ananswer for everything or can run a given distance ... it means you are men-tally and physically prepared to endure when you have no answers and donot know where or even if there is a finish line.

By Col. Caroline Evernham315th Operations Group commander

I wonder how often people assigned here realizeor even think about all the elements that are asso-ciating as part of the total and joint force here onJoint Base Charleston? I have been here about ayear now, and I would like to let you know that I'mvery impressed with what I've seen, and I reallythink we at JB Charleston lead the way as far as theconcept of associations go!Associations are not new to the Air Force. The

classic associate model that we (the 315th AirliftWing) have, where the active-duty "own" theequipment (for us the mighty C-17s on our ramp)and the Reserve component augments the active-duty side in fulfilling the mission, has been aroundfor a very long time. The association between the437th Airlift Wing and the 315th AW on what usedto be Charleston Air Force Base has been in placesince July 1973. So for more than 40 years, thesetwo wings have been sharing aircraft, equipment, mission, facilities and more. Our aircrews trainand deploy both separately and together; our main-tenance groups are integrated on many levels andwork side-by-side daily. During drill weekends,Reservists often take over active-duty offices inorder to serve and support the drilling Reservistswho flow into the base.In 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure

Commission recommend-ed: "Realign NavalWeapons StationCharleston, S.C., by relo-cating the installationmanagement functions toCharleston AFB," andthus began a new type ofassociation - the joint bas-ing concept. In 2010, the628th Air Base Wing wasactivated in order tomerge the air base withthe weapons station, andthings really changed! The 437th AW commander no longer "owned" thebase infrastructure; that became the purview of the628th ABW commander, who now had the missionof supporting all Naval and Air Force entities overa 24,000 acre "joint" installation. That Air Forcecolonel now had to learn about naval nuclear oper-ations, river dredging, harbor security, railwayoperations, and a host of other things he'd neverreally thought about! The great thing is now wehave Air Force, Navy, Army and Coast Guard mis-sion partners who are part of our everyday opera-tions here, and we get to learn more about theirservice and what they do. Amongst our organizations at JB Charleston,

we have the 560th RED HORSE Squadron, which

officially stood up here in March 2009.RED HORSE stands for RapidEngineer Deployable HeavyOperational Repair Squadron, Engineer(now there's a mouthful!) and thesquadron consists of about 200 person-nel that provide major force bed-down,damage repair and heavy engineeringoperations during wartime. This is aReserve unit, but it's not part of the315th AW - they belong directly to theirNumbered Air Force, but the 315th sup-ports them administratively.Associations are the way of the

future. Blending the best parts of active-duty and the Reserve makes us better and stronger, and more ready to face the challenges ahead. Theunit I came from, the 916th Air Refueling Wing atSeymour Johnson AFB, N.C., is an active associa-tion, where the Reserve owns the planes and there'san active-duty squadron of aircrew and maintainersthat integrate with the Reserve. This is a relativelynew concept, but one that is taking shape across thecountry in a variety of airframes, and the AirNational Guard has embraced the concept also.I expect to see more associations in the future,

but I think JB Charleston is a great example of hownumerous disparate units can come together andfunction jointly to meet a common goal and makeour military and our nation stronger.

Joint Base Charleston – An awesome association!

I would ask that you first give the appropriate baseagency a chance to solve the problem, but if you don't get a satisfactoryanswer, call me at 963-5581, or send an e-mail to [email protected] forum is your opportunity to make Joint Base Charleston a better

place to live, work and play. This is also your venue to tell me how ourAirmen, Sailors, Air Force and Navy Civilians and Contractors are support-ing you as a customer. To ensure you receive a response to your concerns, please leave your

name and the information needed to contact you.Question: I'm calling about the cutting of the hours at the base gym. It's

affecting the dependent family community and the retirement communityutilizing the gym. It's also affecting some of the exercise classes that aretaught at the gym.

Response: First and foremost, thank you for your call. The ForceSupport Squadron is currently in a large deployment rotation which has hadsignificant impact on the staffing of the Air Base Fitness center. Althoughwe are able to provide the required hours of operations per Air Forceguidance, we were required to reduce the hours of operation from what waspreviously available. We sincerely regret the inconvenience this has causedsome of our patrons. However, there is good news on the horizon. AirForce Services has scheduled a site visit for this coming May, which shouldallow us to install and begin operating the fitness center with 24-houraccess. During the period when the fitness center is not staffed, patronswill be able to access the fitness center with their common access card. Webelieve this option, along with the "normal" hours of operations, will satisfyall the needs of our patrons.Thank you for calling the Action Line.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Dennis SloanJoint Base Charleston Public Affairs

As the sun sets and the street lights come on, many service members and civilians fromJoint Base Charleston head home after a long day of work. Meanwhile, some base membersare just clocking in.Airmen from the 437th Operation Support Squadron work 24 hours a day, seven days a

week providing flying operations support to the 437th and 315th Airlift Wings. Two units that provide this support well into the night are Aircrew Flight Equipment and

Base Operations."One of the most important parts of our job can only be accomplished at night, "said Senior

Airman Kathryn Raethel, 437th OSS Airfield Management technician. "With several militaryand civilian aircraft landing and taking off from here, there are thousands of lights that guidethem and my job is to make sure they're all on."Raethel drives the entire length of the flight line during her night shifts, looking for any

damaged or burnt out runway lights as well as directional signs used by aircraft."I enjoy the versatility of our mission," said Raethal. "I spend half my days out on the flight

line and the other half in the office. I get the best of both worlds."Whenever an in-flight emergency occurs, the Base Operations office is notified and and

begins informing several different agencies to handle the delicate situation."We interface with just about every agency on base," said Raethal. "When we get an in-

flight emergency call, it's my job to immediately notify the fire department, medical personneland many others to make sure the situation is handled as quick as possible."

While Base Operations Airmen ensure the safety of the air-field after hours, their teammates in Aircrew Flight Equipmentfocus their efforts on the safety of the crews members them-selves. Their mission is to maintain and supply all aircrewmembers with safe and reliable equipment. AFE Airmen han-dle and maintain night vision goggles, helmets, masks andeven parachutes.AFE Airmen go through extensive training to learn about

every piece of equipment they maintain and earn certificationsto accomplish certain aspects of their job. One job in particularwhich requires certification is parachute packing."There is no room for error in my job and I take pride in

that," said Senior Airman Robert McCoy, 437th OSS aircrewflight equipment technician. "We handle several items ofequipment which need to work perfectly to assist aircrewmembers during emergencies and daily operations."Even after dark when the C-17 Globemaster III's are only lit

by the moonlight, AFE Airmen make their way to the aircraftand perform their inspections. Using available lights withinthe aircraft as well as flashlights, the Airmen go around andinspect the seats, masks and other equipment used by the air-crew."I enjoy working the night shifts," said Senior Airman

Justin Turner. "I find it is a bit easier to focus solely on theimmediate task at hand, whereas during the day there can beseveral distractions. It is an honor to do this mission and I'llgladly work day or night to make sure aircrew members havesafe and reliable equipment at all times."

Recently, my son was reading a storydescribing a May 1947 V-2 rocket test atWhite Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.Apparently, the captured rocket veered offcourse and landed outside of Juarez, Mexico. The people of the city were celebrating aspring festival and thought the explosion tobe a part of the festivities. A newspaperheadline read: “Bomb Blast Fails to Halt

Spring Fiesta.” Daily, we will encounter a variety of people

with many different attitudes and capacitiesfor coping. Some, out of their misery, willattempt to make our lives miserable too. Theirattempts are the missiles that fall upon our joy.It is important that we recognize this and, helping where we can, avoid allowing our-selves to become cynical or apathetic. Keepthe faith, run the race, and finish the day withhope, optimism, and joy – and don’t let some-one else’s stray rocket ruin your fiesta!
