In just five years, the Pete Newell Challenge has become one of thepremier events in college basketball. Kansas and Gonzaga join animpressive list of Pete Newell Challenge past participants that includessuch top national programs as Duke, North Carolina, Michigan State,Michigan, Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi State and Brigham Young.
All four teams that are partaking in this year’s event advanced to theNCAA Tournament last season with Kansas reaching the Final Four andCal and Stanford going to the second round.
Cal and Stanford are both 4-0 in Pete Newell Challenge competition. The Bears have knocked off BYU, North Carolina, Georgia and Gonzaga, while the Cardinal has defeated Temple, Duke, Mississippi State andMichigan State.
The Pete Newell Challenge was created to honor the Hall of Famelegend who won a coaching version of the Triple Crown – an NITchampionship at San Francisco (1949), an NCAA title at Cal (1959) andan Olympic gold medal for the United States (Rome, 1960).
Newell, who turned 87 last Aug. 31, continues to teach both college andprofessional players – men and women – through clinics and seminarsaround the world, and at his annual Pete Newell Big Man Camp inHonolulu. This past summer marked the 25th anniversary of the highlyregarded camp.
