January 2012 Volume 2, Issue 1 Kankakee Area Junior Chamber Well we’ve made it through our first full year of being a Jaycee chapter. We had a very successful year; we won many awards both individually and as a chapter. Carol Cademartori and her board gave us some great leadership to help us get to this point. At the Year End Party I had those in attendance share what their favorite memory was from this past year. I want to share some of those favorite memories: - Everyone loving the newsletter and winning an award for it - Meeting at Starbucks planning events - Working on the Jaycees picnic - The haunted trail - The tractor race at the May GA - Winning the Vice Presidential Cup - Socializing with the Jaycees before and after all the events - Playing a zombie and scaring people in the haunted trail As a Jaycee we get the opportunity to serve our community in ways that we could never do alone. Which is another great thing about being a Jaycee and that is we get to work within a community of people who share the same values about helping people and making our community a better place. Being a part of the Jaycee organization also brings along many opportunities that I am excited to lead you to experience. We have many projects that we started last year that will continue this coming year. I’ve already had meetings with individuals about projects they would like to see happen and I can tell you this is going to be an exciting year! JAYCEE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Membership Booth

We Want To Hear From You!

The newsletter is truly the voice of the Jaycees and is our

opportunity to tell our story to prospective members and the

community. Every member of the Jaycees plays an important

role in our success as an organization. Becky and I would like

to challenge the membership to become more involved! The

newsletter has always been open to contributions from

anyone in the organization; however, we have received few

articles from the general membership.

Since April last year, we have encouraged at least one person

from the general membership to make a contribution to the

newsletter.

Many of you may be asking yourselves: “What can I

contribute?” Remember each of you has a reason for joining

the Jaycees and that is a great place to start. We invite you to

reflect on an event you are involved in, look ahead to an event

you are part of, tell us why you joined the Jaycees and/or what

you hope to accomplish. The sky is the limit!

When I joined the Jaycees, I jumped in with both feet. Getting

actively involved not only helps you understand the vision of

the Jaycees, but it will help you grow as a person and a

professional. We hope that you will accept this challenge to

grow and make a difference! General membership

contributions are due to Jackie or myself by the first Friday of

each month.

Please contact me, Jeff Hogard at [email protected] or

Jackie Teske at [email protected] if you have any questions

or need assistance. We look forward to hearing what you have

to say!

Jeff Hogard—Communications Director Jackie Teske—Chapter Secretary

The Kankakee Area Jaycee's currently has 60 members. We lost a few members from last month, but I know this year of 2012 is going to bring us lots of new members! We just have to do it! Anne Fraher did an amazing job as Membership VP and I hope I can fulfill this role just as well! I will be working on great ideas to increase our membership and I want all of you to help me with your own ideas. I am very excited about this year and I know it is going to a great year for the Kankakee Area Jaycees!!! Nicole Issert Membership VP

Name: Heather Morgan

Occupation: 6th grade Reading teacher and volleyball coach at Momence Junior High

Hobbies: Running, scrapbooking, sports, photography, singing and reading.

What would be (or is) your dream project? The Children's Shopping Spree was a great project. I would really love to do something HUGE for the

underprivileged children in our community. I just don't know what yet.

What is something you gained from joining the Jaycees?: I gained a great group of new friends and a chance to make a difference.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment (within or outside the Jaycees)?: My greatest accomplishment was walking in and joining the Jaycees on my own. No one had to recruit me. I just knew I needed to be a part of the group.

What does being a Jaycee mean to you?: Being a Jaycee means making an impact on the community. I have been blesses with many wonderful things in my life and it is time to pay it forward.

There are a lot of upcoming opportunities for you to get involved in! The following event is listed with the chairperson. If you would like to volunteer please let them know! Polar Plunge—March 3rd, 2pm—Jackie Teske Also, If you have an idea now is the best time to share it. Even if it is just an idea we can come together to make it into a plan. The more events and opportunities we create, the bigger and better your experience will be as a Jaycee, and the more impact and influence we can have in improving our community!

“Make an Impact”

January 2012 ● Volume 2, Issue 1 ● Kankakee Area Junior Chamber

Community Focus…

With New Year comes a new transition for the Kankakee Area Jaycees. The U.S. Jaycees was founded in 1920 in St. Louis, Mo., to teach “Leadership Through Community Service” to young people ages 18 to 39. Our chapter here in Kankakee County maintains the mission that is consistent through the entire Jaycees network. As the 2011 "Community VP", I want to thank the membership for voting me onto the board for another year, and I want to share what I believe we can do in this community. Community is a theme that is tied throughout the Jaycees creed, and I believe that particularly in our case, we have an opportunity to have a great, positive effect on this community. Like many communities Kankakee County is a place where help is needed, and where help is needed, so is leadership. I believe it is of utmost importance to continue to develop the talents of our members into leaders in the community. There are many places where valuable opinions are needed including school boards, library boards, public transportation, village and county boards. These positions of leadership in the community also need intelligent people who are willing to serve for a greater purpose. As your Community VP in 2012, I would like to partner with the Kankakee Regional Chamber, the Kankakee Regional Young Professionals and any other entities in the community that will assist in developing young leaders to create an over-arching leadership program. This formal group would include speakers and assignments with the purpose and intent of teaching young professionals in our community the proper way to register for an election, how to petition to run in an election, the various ways to serve as a leader in the community and how to be an effective leader. This program will take many volunteers to be successful, but I believe it is our mission as the Jaycees to find a way to have a real impact on our community, and I firmly believe that this is one way in which we can do it. As we enter into 2012, seemly at a full sprint, I hope that we can continue to build on what we have already accomplished in this community. I look forward to serving with you! Andrew Ollis Community VP 2012

Carol’s “Goober”? As a chapter, we have submitted our first Giessenbier Book to the State. For those of you unfamiliar with what this is, it is basically a portfolio of our chapter for the year. It includes our Chapter Plan and our quarterly evaluations, recommendations for the future, important supporting documents, and pictures. We made a great effort to make it look professional and classy. A printed copy, in color, will be available for viewing at the General Meeting. This will be a great resource to future Jaycees. An emailed PDF copy will be sent to each member as well. So, why is it called a Giessenbier Book? It is named after the founder of the Jaycees. His name was Henry Giessenbier, but many called him Hy. The group actually started in 1910 as a dance club to preserve traditional dances. Five years later it expanded into a 35 man civic organization. It quickly grew to 750 men in less than five months! Giessenbier’s vision was for young men to expand their business skills and reputations in the community. The Jaycees was an organization that gave young men the opportunities to build their skills and capitalize on these opportunities to be successful and contribute to the success of our nation. Each year, in Giessenbier’s name, chapters throughout our state and the entire Jaycee world submit Books to show their chapters accomplishments. The goal is to receive an award for the Best Chapter of the Year. Good luck, Kankakee! You’ve worked hard, had a ton of fun, and have achieved so much in your first full year! December Recognition

Officer of the Month: Raquel Holody. She did a great job getting sponsorships for Children's Christmas Shopping Spree! On top of that she was a volunteer at the event, giving great leadership to her fellow Jaycees. As always, Raquel had the perfect way to talk to the children to get their attention and get them organized!

Great job, Raquel!

Jaycee of the Month: Heather Morgan. Heather has really made an effort to be more involved as a Jaycee since she joined us just a few short months ago. Heather volunteered at the Haunted Trail, Children's Christmas Shopping Spree and the Christmas Wrapping at Barnes and Noble.

Keep up the good work, Heather!

The Jaycees provides each of us opportunities to create positive change, meet a group of aggressive young people and take part in worthwhile projects.

The 2012 state staff is excited and ready to serve you. I look forward to serving you as the 81st State President. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Joanne Rinaldo 2012 Illinois Jaycees President

Sharing is Caring!! The weekend before Christmas, 5 volunteers delivered Christmas Gifts to homebound seniors in Kankakee County through the Share the Warmth Program at Catholic Charities. The Share the Warmth Program delivered gifts to 225 senior throughout the county that are donated by members and groups in the community. This is the second year that we have volunteered for Share the Warmth and this year turned out to be just as impactful as last year. For many of the volunteers, it was their first time volunteering for the project. The volunteers were truly touched by the welcome and response they received from the senior who received gifts. Smiles and laughter were shared between the seniors and the volunteers as well as some tears. I want to thank Raquel Holody, Jackie Teske, Ayla Connell, and Ann Procopio for donating your time to make an impact on your community and a senior's life! Lucinda LaPierre Business VP

New Chairman!! It is with great pleasure that I now get to serve as Chairman of the Board of the great chapter of the Kankakee Area Jaycees! We had a wonderful first full year as a chapter and grew leaps and bounds. I look forward to another great year! For any new members, let me introduce myself. My name is Carol Cademartori and I served as the 2011 President. My profession is a high school social studies teacher.

But, my passion is directing musicals. I direct the local musicals in Grant Park for both the middle school and high school. We will be performing Beauty and the Beast in March, and you all are invited! I am also pursuing my Masters in History! One of my goals is to teach AP History classes for dual college credit to high school seniors so they can save some money on their college expenses. I also would like to be a college professor one day. In my free time I enjoy reading, theatre, being goofy, doing anything new and exciting, and of course spending time with my great Jaycee friends! I love being involved in both the board activities and working on projects.

My goal for the year is to be a mentor to all Jaycees wanting to get a great experience and learn some skills to help them in their professional lives.

Kankakee Area Jaycees 2nd Annual

Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree

On December 17, 2011, the Kankakee Area Jaycees brought Christmas joy to 37 underprivileged children at their 2nd Annual Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree.

Each child was identified by their school to participate. The Jaycee’s raised $2,200

through local businesses and citizens, allowing each child to spend $50 at Super K-mart during the shopping spree. The morning began with joyful Christmas music, coloring, and

breakfast from Subway.

The children’s anticipation grew strong as they were lined up to be paired up with volunteers to explore Super K-mart.

“Kids really will take you by surprise,” said Jeremy Winge founder of the Kankakee Jaycees,

“many of them will spend their $50 on family rather than themselves.”

Kids bought anything from socks for dad to a Barbie doll for their sister. “Over the last two years we have had tremendous success with the Children’s Christmas Shopping Spree ,” stated

Carol Cadematori, president of the Jaycees, “it is the least we can do as an organization and

we can’t wait to do it again in 2012!.”

“This is by far one of our favorite projects we do all year,” said Becky Hagge President Elect

“everyone in our chapter is concerned about our community especially the kids and we want to do all we can to help!”

Sponsors and individual donors come together to make this event possible.

A special thanks goes out to our sponsors:

Follow the directions and make sure to choose the correct location. We will be plunging in Manteno on Saturday, March 3, 2012. When it asks if you’d like to join a team, be sure to choose the Kankakee Area Jaycees team. Anyone can register to take the plunge, there is no age limit (if you are under 18 you must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian). You can wear anything except a wet suit. Shoes are recommended. Costumes are encouraged. Be sure to bring a friend to hold your towel and take pictures!!

2012 Plunge Site: Manteno Lake – Manteno

Plunge Date: March 3, 2012

Plunge Time: 2 p.m.

Registration Begins: noon

Post-Plunge Party: 3 p.m. at the Manteno Sportsmen's Club.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. This will be my 8th time taking the plunge. The weather is different every year; from 50 degrees and raining, to watching huge machinery hauled in to break up the 16 inches of ice covering the lake. All I know is that it is a lot of fun and it is for a cause that I can’t help but raise money for. Seeing the smiles on the athletes’ faces after competing in an event is priceless. It’s something that warms your heart quicker than a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter’s day.
