Welcome

3

Two years ago, when we launched a new café/ bar and film programme we were determined that they would be about the same things that Square Chapel has always been about: bringing people together, independent and unique. It is a genuine delight to see the café full of such a variety of people every day and it’s right that the programme reflects that.

We’re absolutely thrilled to have been given a Pub of the Season award by Halifax CAMRA particularly as we have our second Beer and Gin festival in July; those who came to our first event last year will know that it’s not only a brilliant event, but also a little different – as much effort goes into providing food and live entertainment as goes into selecting an award winning selection of beers and gins.

The full line-up for our Up North Film and Television Festival is yet to be announced – but, there are some teaser events in this brochure and already it’s looking like you need to act pretty quickly to get tickets and to look out for the full festival line up coming out in late March!

There is one event here that gives you an insight into the brilliant and strange mind of our wonderful Film Programmer: a genuinely unmissable screening of Flash Gordon, with Brian Blessed and Bulsara and his Queenies playing a set of everyone’s favourite Queen songs.

Personally, I’m delighted that we have such a strong music and literature programme this season. Will Self and Jenni Murray will both bring great prose and fascinating insights. Simon Armitage has long been one of my favourite poets and I’ve wanted to see him perform here ever since I started all those years ago; he’s a wonderful performer. We have the wonderful Lady Maisery returning to us and a new brilliant folk act from across the Atlantic – Mama’s Broke, alongside intimate gigs with Duke Special and Eddi Reader.

The strength and breadth of this programme shows how things have changed: new acts, bigger names and bigger events. Some of these events happen because you tell us what you would like to see back (Four Hands on a Piano). It is you that makes them successful – so do keep talking to us about what you’d like to see and do keeping coming out to support them!

Michael Pinchbeck CONCERTO Featuring Nicholas McCarthy (Piano) and Orchestra of Square Chapel

Sunday 21 July 7pm, £12 This is a unique musical experience inspired by Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, created by award-winning theatre-maker Michael Pinchbeck and featuring world-renowned concert pianist Nicholas McCarthy accompanied by the Orchestra of Square Chapel. Infamous pianist Paul Wittgenstein commissioned Ravel to write him a concerto after he lost his right arm during the First World War. At the same moment in time, the assassin

that triggered that conflict, Gavrilo Princip, was kept in shackles in prison in Terezin, his withered arm tied up with piano wire, fading away into the snow. Unravelling narratives such as these surround this piece of music’s composition – and together they weave a true story that spans 100 years of history. Michael Pinchbeck’s Concerto is a deconstructed and re-orchestrated exploration of the legacy of war and the healing power of music to overcome personal tragedy. Musical manuscript will fall from the sky like snow on a battlefield. Doctors will persuade shell-shocked soldiers to play again. A conductor will become an assassin.
