2. ~~T the five Councils endorse in principle the idea of the county Council to acquiD the business of the Electric Light & Power Supply corpn.

3. y~~T in the event of the Government setting up one authority for the control of electricity, reticulation and distribution should be vested in local authorities t~rough County Councils.

4. THAT the Premier be asked to make available a copy of the report of Mr . cochran , the expert appointed to report on the whole of the electricity position in this State.

Resolved: "THA.T the matter be received and a copy forwarded to each Alderman and the matter be considered at the next meeting of the council . "

His .. vorship the ::ayor {Alderman P.J. Walters J.P.) submitted a verbal intimation that in accordance with Council's instructions a public meeting had been called for the following night ;ednesday 5th July at 8 p.m. in an endeavour to raise funds to assist in the Anzac

meeting.

His /orship the Hayor {Alderman P.J. Walters J . P.) intimated that a . meeting of the Markets sub-8ommittee would be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 5th July 1944 preceding the Anzac House . ppeal, and asked that the mmbers of the Committee attend.

j His .lor ship the :ayor {Alderman P. J . alters J.P. ) as Chairman of the works , Building and Parks comnittee submitted a report of a meeting held on 29th June 1944 as contained in Folios 4/1944 and 5/1944 of the Committee's report book, and it was resolved that the report be received and considered seriatim. Upon Recommendation No.4 being submitted for adoption an amendment was moved by Alderman Fleming , seconded by Alderman Bugler: "THAT the Police be asked to assist the Council in preventing undesirables from frequenting the Council 's reserves." Amendment lost . A further amendment was then moved by Alderman Newnham, seconded by Alderman {Mrs.) Fowler: "THAT the recommendation be altered to read: "TIL r in view of the diff iculties experienced by the park rangers in controlling adults in the parks, it is recommended that a notice be placed at the entrance of all playgrounds intimating that adults, at the discretion of the park ranger , will not be allowed therein unless ace ::>mpanied by children." The voting being in favour of the amendment it was submitted as the substantive motion and declared carried. Recommendation No . 3, which had been adopted, was re-committed for further consideration on the voices, and it was resolved: "1'dAT the recommendation be not adopted , but that the applicant for the bus service be asked to submit a further suggestion containing an alternative route owing to the narrow streets which he has selected for the original suggestion." After further consideration it was resolved that the Works committee's report as a whole, with the foregoing alterations, be received and adopted and its recommendations carried into effect.

The Engineer submitted a report of works progress during the past two weeks , and it was resolved that the report be received and adopted. Arising out of the Engineer's report it was resolved: "TH.ti.T the Engineer be instructed to submit an estimate of the cost of re-constructing Raper Street in concrete.

The Cnief Health Inspector submitted his report in accordance with Folios 2, 3 and 4 of the Chief Health Inspector's report book, and it was resolved that the report be received and adopted.

ORDERS OF THE DAY:

l. Under this heading 1-Jr . F .M. Burke, ex- M.L . A. for Newtown , was present to receive a framed letter expressing the Council's appreciation of his services during the period he represented newtown in the New south Wales State Parliament. AS Mr. Burke was present early His Iorship the Mayor adjourned the ordinary business after the consideration of a letter from the i1:inister for the Army, and welcomed Mr. Burke to the meeting . The Town Clerk read the letter expressing the council's appreciation for the services given by Mr. Burke during his 27 years as Newtown 's representative in the State Parliament . The 1:.:ayor then presented the framed letter to Mr. Burke, Who suitably responded and thanked t.l:l3 Council for their kindness in the matter, and said he would treasure the letter as a memory of a very ~appy 27 years of office,

Fowler asked whether it was possible for builders or owners to secure the necessary galvanised iron etc. for repairs to houses, and mentianed 104 Goodsell Street, v;here the tenants ·ere suffering great inconvenience due to leaking roofs etc. Reply -that if any plumber made applicatian to the council the Town Clerk vwuld give a letter to the Departr.ent of ::aterial Supply, stressing he urgency of the case, and the plumber would then secure an order fra~ the Supply Department to secure the necessary iron; but owing to the fact t~at it as in short supply, even though the order was obtained it was not always possible ta obtain the re1uired material.

•Alderman Brannan asked that the Lighting committee inspeot Alice Lane at its junction with Holmwood Street in an endeavour to rectify the lighting position there.

Alderman Bugler asked that the Tramway Dept. be wirtten to asking for investigation to be made into the reason why the trams travelling inwards to the City did not stop at the Simmons Street stop when signalled by waiting passengers.

.Moved by Alderman Smith, seconded by Alderman Newnham: "THAT a letter of contratulation be forwarded to the parents of Acting Flight Lieutenant E . A. McGregor of 4 Wellington Street, Newtown, who was recently awarded an immediate D. F . C. for bravery and devoti on to duty in air operations over Europe." Carried.

Alderman Smith intimated that he would be able to supply some i n formation re garding treatment for the top of the Council table at next meeting.

Alderman Goddard drew attention to the kerbstone at the corner of Pine Street and Leamington Avenue, which was wearing very badly.

Alderman Newnham asked if the next meeting of the works committee would consider the replace­ment of trees which had died in Enmore ward.

Alderman Greenup asked if the next meeting of the works committee would inspect a garage in Mechanic Street off Hordern Street, where milk is being stored.

Alderman Greenup asked if he could be given a copy of Mr. McKell 's letter re tbe Boyd sinclair ~. case.

Alderman Bugler intimated that he also would like a copy.

Minutes of a meeting of the council of the MUnicipality of Newtown, held at the Town Hall, Newtown on TUesday, 18th July 1944 at 7.59 p.m.

His worship the Mayor (Alderman P.J. Walters J.P.) declared the meeting open at 7.59 p.m. and as the business of the Finance Committee had not concluded it was resolved that the council Meeting stand adjourned until such time later in the evening as was necessary to enable the business oftbe Finance committee to be concluded .

The council resumed at 8.49 p.m. and there were PRESENT:

SYMPATHY:

Feeling references having been made by the Mayor and Aldermen, it was resolved by the members rising in silence that letters of sympathy be forwarded to the family of the late Mrs. Kelly, who lost her life as the result of vhe fire in Whateley Street; Mrs. Ridgway of 33 BUcknell street on the loss of her husband and Mrs. McKay of 110 Regent street on the loss of her husband. A point of order was r aised by Alderman Newnham: "THAT before the matter could be dealt with a notice of rescission would have to be given of the previous motion on the Council's books." This point was upheld by His Worship the Mayor and the matter ruled out of order. Alderman Smith intimated that he would g ive notice of motion for a rescission of the previous motion, but it was pointed out that this would be too late, the prosecution taking place next Friday.

The Chief Health Inspector submitted his report in accordance with Folio 5 of the Chief Health Inspector's report book and it was resolved that the report be received and adopted.

ORDERS OF THE DAY:

' 1. Under this heading was set down the matter of considering four resolutions from the Electricity Supply Joint Committee dealing with the proposed setting up of an Electricity Commission and the absorption of the Electric Light & Power supply corpn. by the Sydney county Council in accordance with the details as set out in a communicat ion to the Alde rmen, and shown under "Reports" at a previous meeting. The Town Clerk gave a verbal report that the Premier had set up an Electricity Advisory committee which would act in an advisory capacity only and not take over any existing bodies, and also that publicity in the papers i ntimated the proposed introduction of the Greater Sydney Bill at the next session of Parliament, and in view of this information it was resolved: "THAT the whole matter stand over for further consideration until something definite can be secured as to the Government's intentions in the matter."

MOTIONS PURSUANT TO NOTICE:

"THAT the council urges upon the Minister for W.O.I. (Hon. J.J. Dedman) the extreme need for I·, ..J J building regulations to be relaxed to enable the Sydney Day NUrseries, and similar instit­

utions, to undertake repairs and necessary extensions. In view of the dire need that urgent cases should be accommodated to relieve the present congestion, council asks the Minister to. treat this matter as one of greatest urgency."

Alderman Fleming asked that attention should be given to impressing upon householders the need to keep their garbage tins properly covered.

Alderman Bugler asked that attention be given to a hole in Enmore Road opposite Riddell'S timber yard.

Alderman Brannan asked if the Chief Warden would inform him if the wardens' post situated at : . G. Sim's property, Gladstone street, has been used as a sly grog depot. The Chief Narden (Alderman A.E. Greenup J.P.) replied that he understood two members of the post had been prosecuted for selling sly grog, but as far as he knew there was no drink at the post then. but that the post was now closed and its activities transferred to another post in the area.

And there being no further business the meeting terminated at 10.57 p.m.
