TRANSCENDING PEOPLE POWER

Texview cover for Q2 carries the title Transcending People Power, the second focus area under Quantum LEAP. As explained on the cover, it means to go beyond or extend notably beyond one’s ordinary limits. But in order for that to happen, we must first adopt a positive mindset at work. Granted, that is easier said than done, especially on days when nothing seem to be going your way. But if we choose to wallow in it, there is no other way forward. However, if we remind ourselves to stay positive, we can overcome almost anything if we train our minds to think about it the right way and view obstacles as opportunities rather than setbacks.

In his CEO message, Mr Yap elaborates further on some simple steps on how we can cultivate a positive mindset which will translate to a positive workplace.

The feature article for this quarter is Tan Sri and Puan Sri Konishi’s Golden Wedding Jubilee and a tribute poem to the golden couple. On behalf of my Texview committee, we wish you both much happiness and joy as you celebrate these 50 wonderful years together.

I would also like to extend congratulatory wishes to Dr Yuma Konishi, who takes over the helm as the President/CEO of Polymer Engineering Division with effect from 1 July 2019. Dr Yuma has also been recently appointed as a council member to Penang Strategic Investment Advisory Council, a body under the Penang State government as well as to the Board of Directors of Association of Malaysian Medical Industries (AMMI). Read more about this on page 12.

Mr Johnson Tay retires as the President/CEO of Polymer Engineering Division and while he shall be dearly missed, we extend him our best wishes for a relaxing and happy retirement and may he now fully enjoy his time with family and friends. A dinner was held at Villa Primavera to bid him farewell which you can read about on page 17.

Other happenings this quarter include Wisma Texchem’s official opening of their new 3rd floor which is tenanted to Sushi King Holdings Sdn Bhd and with a modern looking open office concept. The façade and lobby of Wisma Texchem also underwent refurbishment and it now has a modern looking lobby and an even more impressive cafeteria.

Texchem’s Cultural Ambassadors were kept busy this second quarter organising activities on Corporate Social Responsibility and staff engagement. Their articles appear from pages 22 to 28.

Let us carry with us the concept of pride of association and transcending people power by doing away with the negativity at work and instead enhance our professional life by creating a positive working environment and presenting ourselves as a true professional so that we leave a lasting impression on everyone we meet.

President & Group CEO’s Message

YAP KEE KEONGPresident & Group CEO

Dear Texchem Family Members

We have reached the mid-point of 2019. With the recent accord between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Japan, the US and China have agreed to resume trade talks and this gives new hope that trade tensions that have contributed to a global economic slowdown may be eased. However, this does not mean that the trade war is over as both US and China still have much to agree on and many businesses and investors continue to be affected by this pro-longed row.

At Texchem, we continue to focus on our long-term growth direction as well as dealing with current challenges as we sail through this business cycle. Our operating environment is constantly changing; businesses continue to face uncertainties, environmental issues continue to grow increasingly pressing and the use of AI and the IoT (Internet of things) are spreading as we enter into the future with Industry 4.0. In this fast-changing environment that requires us to be experts in our field, Texchem is taking steps to keep up with the industry trends to improve our business, identify opportunities for growth and to keep the company competitive. We need to determine how our manufacturing plants and all supporting operations can adopt and integrate with Industry 4.0 and launch ourselves into the new era of production.

Similarly, each one of us must stay abreast of changes from Industry 4.0. The process of trying out and learning new procedures and technology is a chance for personal growth and new knowledge. Take a step out of your comfort zone, switch up your routine and go beyond your ordinary limit and you will find that doing so will increase your efficiency or enhance your current skill set.

While we are going through this challenging times, it is more important than ever that we stand together and continue to nurture a positive environment so that we can manifest a positive mindset when it comes to work life. Let us practise appreciation, empathy and gratitude and bear in mind that one simple act of kindness creates a positive effect to the lives of several people. Like the common saying, “charity begins at home”, practise these positive behaviours with your fellow colleagues, first and foremost.

Appreciate your workmates by smiling or saying a kind word about them. Incorporate gratitude by saying “thank you” and practising tolerance. Show empathy by being understanding and helping your team members in their times of need. All these will help you cultivate a healthy, teamwork-oriented relationship with your colleagues and start a ripple effect where everyone in turn will be kind, tolerant and helpful to others.

Dear Texchemers, let us continue to transcend our own limitations. Remember this, the ability for our company and ourselves to adapt, integrate and innovate will lead to our survival in this new phase of industrialisation. Let us harness the people power in Texchem and continue transcending!

Wedding Anniversaries

26 April 2019 marks the Golden Wedding Jubilee of Tan Sri Fumihiko and Puan Sri Atsuko Konishi.

Five decades of being together and still going strong. This is only possible when two people share a common interest, learn to understand one another, practise tolerance, patience and give each other space.

During the early struggles of Tan Sri to establish his Texchem empire, Puan Sri dutifully stayed at home to tend to her three young children single-handedly. It was not an easy task in a foreign land with no relatives around. She performed the job of a mother, wife and home-maker all rolled into one. It is Puan Sri’s constant support, understanding and patience that brought much strength and courage to Tan Sri. Those early days from 1969, though life was tough yet they were a happy family. They derived joy from the simple things and were grateful for every little blessings. Way back, that was the best years and most memorable period.

Fast forward to the millennium, so much has been achieved, the family tree grew from small plants into matured trees. A golden harvest and a success story being told again and again. Naturally, such an auspicious occasion must be dedicated to Tan Sri’s beloved parents who have since passed, but fondly remembered. In God’s garden, they must have been truly contented that their only son has delivered an excellent report card.

All of us at Texchem would like to congratulate Tan Sri and Puan Sri Konishi on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Jubilee. We wish them the very best for many more years to come.

To the seasoned invited guests, it was just another fabulous invitation to Villa Primavera to attend a salon concert dinner. Nothing was mentioned or even whispered that it was to be a special event, as the hosts wanted a humble and low-profile celebration with 80 close friends on their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Alexander Kalashkov (violin), Maria Lebed (piano) and Sofia Lebed (viola) were invited to play specially selected pieces worthy of a once-a-lifetime celebration. As soon as the concert and encores ended, Maria was given the honor to announce Tan Sri and Puan Sri Konishi’s golden wedding jubilee. While the nostalgic Wedding March was played, a white three-tier wedding cake was pushed out for the couple to cut, and then a hand-bouquet of golden roses was presented to Puan Sri. A short, simple and sweet ceremony that took everyone by surprise with loud applause and then voices of congratulations poured in.

Guests proceeded to their respective tables for a Japanese fine-dining experience, paired with specially selected wines, the highlight of which is a 5-litre Jerobaom Chateau Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville, Pauillac-Medoc, Bordeaux. Seen at the main ta-ble were distinguished personalities such as Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian and wife Dato’ Sandra, Tan Sri Lau Kim Khoon and wife Datin Suwini, Dato’ Seri Goh Eng Toon, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon and Japanese Consul-General Mr Shinichiro Kanoya and his wife Mrs Machiko. Tan Sri Dr Koh took the opportunity to give a short address to congratulate the couple followed by a toast to good health.

After a sumptuous dinner, and plenty of catching up with each other, the time has come to say goodnight to the wonderful hosts. Each guest was given a dainty bag of Godiva chocolates for sweet memory to last for a long time.

A Refurbished Wisma Texchem!

28 years ago, way back in 1991, Tan Sri Konishi being someone far-sighted bought two adjoining piece of land as part of his plan to expand Texchem to Central Region, Kuala Lumpur.

In 1993, commencement for the construction of a 3-storey office block and 2 blocks of warehouses took place and an official opening ceremony for Wisma Texchem was held on 29 April 1994. Since then, Texchem’s business has grown tremendously and in year 1995, one additional warehouse block was constructed to cater for the expansion.

Fast forward to 2019, with Restaurant Division continuing to grow, an additional floor was constructed at Wisma Texchem together with the refurbishment of the building and car park expansion. The construction work started in May 2018 and it took 6 months to complete constructing the additional floor and parking lots, and 5 months to refurbish Wisma Texchem. With the completion of all renovation works in April 2019, Wisma Texchem now has an upgraded look with a modern looking office, a cafeteria with nice ambience, upgraded toilets, new landscaping, additional parking lots and a passenger lift.

On 16 April 2019, a ceremony was held to officiate the opening of the 3rd floor as well as the refurbished building. Our Executive Chairman, Tan Sri F Konishi and President and Group CEO, Mr Yap Kee Keong, were present to officiate the opening ceremony together with Mr Akihiko Hijioka, President/COO of Restaurant Division and Mr Wong Kin Chai, Director of Texchem Corporation Sdn Bhd and the Chairman of Wisma Texchem’s Building Committee. Also present were some of our colleagues from Penang office and the staff in Wisma Texchem. After officiating the refurbished Wisma Texchem, Tan Sri Konishi and Mr Yap Kee Keong were taken on a tour of the ground floor and the cafeteria before proceeding to officiate the 3rd floor.

The 3rd floor is occupied by Restaurant Division with an open office concept, the first company in Texchem Group to adopt this. The purpose of adopting an open space office is for employees to create better relationships and work in a team. Mr Hiroki Mori led the tour while explaining the various workstations, while at the same time, Tan Sri Konishi stopped to chat with some employees about how they liked the open office concept. All the guests were treated to lunch at the end of the tour.

Association of Malaysian Medical Industries (AMMI)

AMMI was formed in 1989 to represent leading medical device manufacturing companies in the medical technology industry in Malaysia. The association has 74 member companies and collectively, they account for more than half of the total export revenue for “Made-in-Malaysia” medical devices. These companies continue to be the growth base of the medical device industry in Malaysia and consist of three main types of industry players; manufacturers, suppliers of raw materials and services to the medical devices manufacturing companies and importers and exporters of medical devices.

During their AGM on 13 June 2019 at E&O Hotel Penang, Dr Yuma was elected to the Board of Directors, and subsequently entrusted to lead the Talent Development Committee while also appointed as a member of sub-committee on Government Affairs.

With a projected expansion in export growth rate, and very healthy future expansion plans by the members, Talent Development Pillar to support continuous development of a skilled and adaptable workforce is a key component of AMMI’s Strategic Roadmap 2020.

It looks like a very busy year ahead for Dr Yuma Konishi. Besides serving on these 2 committees, Dr Yuma has been appointed as the President & CEO of Polymer Engineering Division with effect from 1 July 2019.

Congratulations on your appointments and for the well-earned position as the President & CEO of Polymer Engineering Division. I wish you every success in your new duties.

to Mr Johnson Tay, President & CEO of Polymer Engineering Division

Happy Retirement

On 13 June 2019, we bid Mr Johnson Tay, who served as the President and CEO of Polymer Engineering Division prior to his retirement a fond farewell over dinner at Villa Primavera. Johnson joined Texchem-Pack (KL) Sdn Bhd in November 2009 as an Executive Director. In May 2011, he was seconded to Texchem-Pack (Wuxi) Co Ltd as Deputy Managing Director. In October 2013, Johnson returned to Penang as Managing Director of Texchem-Pack (M) Sdn Bhd. He continued to advance his career until his present position as the Division Head of Polymer Engineering Division.

In his speech at the farewell dinner, Tan Sri Konishi thanked Johnson for his contribution and dedication. Tan Sri Konishi also mentioned how Johnson did a great job in handling the divestment of the EPS business of Texchem-Pack (KL) and how he successfully contributed to the success of Wuxi and Vietnam plants and finally leading the whole Division as the President and CEO.

Article by Khow Hong Cheong (Texchem-Pack (M) Sdn Bhd)

Mr Yap Kee Keong thanked Johnson for his enthusiasm in running the Division and that it has been a great pleasure working with him and wished him a very happy retirement. Johnson gave his thank you speech whereby he attributed his success to the great support from the management and his fellow colleagues. He urged that the same support be given to his successor, Dr Yuma Konishi and hoped that the Division shall achieve greater success under Dr Yuma.

It has been a pleasure working with Mr Johnson Tay and all of us wish him all the best in his new phase of “freedom” from worklife. May he continue to enjoy good health, happy moments and a fulfilled life with his family and friends.

During this training program, I had the opportunity to witness and understand the implementation of 5S and Kanban system in warehouse operation. We plan to introduce them into KFLM’s operations.

Two things that amazed me most during this trip was the good discipline and attitude of Japanese workers and the cleanliness at both warehouses we visited. I highlighted and directed these two observations to our two KFLM trainees. We would like them to emulate these two good qualities when they returned to Malaysia.

On behalf of KFLM, I would like to express our sincere thanks to all members of Kokubu Group Corp. Japan for their support and hospitality during our trip. A special arigatogozamashita to Jacky Kesuma. Without Jacky bridging the language barrier for our two Malay staff, their training would not have been made possible.

Day 1 to day 3’s training focused on warehouse operation in Kawaguchi Distribution Centre. This warehouse deploys built-in frozen Bucket-type ASRS (Automated Storage & Retrieval System) to maximise storage space for loose items, improve picking efficiency and at the same time reducing staff headcount. This Distribution Centre with only 100 warehouse workers was able to process orders for 1,500 outlets on a daily basis. They handle about 15,000 cartons equivalent each day. Such high productivity and efficiency was partly due to the usage of Kokubu’s own system known as GAS (Gated Assorted System) and HAS (Handheld Assorted System) in their picking process. These systems enable them to increase the productivity and accuracy in the picking process.

Day 4’s training was conducted at Funabashi Hinode Distribution Center. We were greeted by Shouhei Nagai San and Takashi Abe San upon arrival. This is a multi-level warehouse complex consisting of 5 floors with a built-up area of 111,838 sq ft. This warehouse caters for chilled and frozen food to be supplied to food retail outlets, hotels and restaurants. At this location, we were able to witness the operation of Pallet-type ASRS – similar to the system we shall be installing at our new warehouse in Shah Alam. As such, the training we received here was very important.

Did you know that Sushi King offers Sushi making classes? Wouldn’t it be fun to bring your spouse and children along with you and learn how to make sushi? On 27 April 2019, Texchem Cultural Ambassador Committee organised a sushi making class for Texchemers and their family members at Sushi King Autocity, Prai.

A total of 31 participants registered for the class. We were divided into 6 groups, and Mr Boey, the District Manager started the session by giving us a brief introduction, the program and the rules and regulations. We learned some Japanese terms such as Nori (seaweed) and Kanikama (crabstick).

The chef then started the class by demonstrating the mixing of Japanese rice with Japanese sushi vinegar. We were also given a chance to try rice mixing. Next, we were guided on how to make various sushi such as Nigiri, Gunkan, Maki and Temaki. Making Maki proved to be the most challenging as the steps and techniques have to be followed closely otherwise you end up having a loose triangle shaped Maki instead of a solid and square Maki.

This activity was organised by Cultural Ambassador Committee for the purpose of developing pride of association and it was indeed a well spent Saturday morning. Not only did we learn about sushi and sushi making, we also got to meet up with colleagues from other companies in the group and their family members. It was also a good time for family bonding for those who brought their families and a great opportunity for their family members to learn more about the company. And now, I can proudly claim that I have attended sushi making class by Sushi King!

Peace & Harmony Home, a charity home for the aged located at Bukit Dumbar, Penang needed funds to purchase a van to transport their residents (consisting of homeless and sick elderly folks) to the hospital and medical centers for treatment and follow through consultations, as well as to purchase rehabilitation equipment for the Home.

On 2 June 2019, Peace & Harmony Home for the very first time, organised a charity food fair at The Esplanade, Penang to raise funds for these needs.

Texchem Cultural Ambassador Committee, who has been supporting Peace and Harmony Home on a few initiatives since 2018, again took the baton to set up a stall (manned by Texchem’s staff volunteers) in this fund-raising event. This was made possible by collaborating with Sushi King, Texchem Polymers and Sea Master, who sponsored their respective products for sale at the fair.

We managed to raise RM1,885.00 which according to Mr Tan Swee Ban, the Founder of Peace and Harmony Home exceeded the expected target from our stall. A total of RM250,000 was raised from the over 100 stalls that participated in this noble cause.

A brief interview with Mr Tan (popularly known as Ah Ban) on what made him start the Home revealed a man with a “Big Heart”. Mr Tan was a social worker at the Penang Hospital since 2008. He noticed some elderly sick folks who needed tender loving care. However, they were abandoned by their family when they were to be discharged from the hospital. Therefore, in September 2015, with public funding, Mr Tan started Peace and Harmony Home (something like a halfway home) to care for these abandoned souls, providing the basic necessities of shelter, food and tender loving care. Soon after, the Home also provided rehabilitation care with visiting doctors and therapists as volunteers. Once the residents are strong and have gained their mobility, they are transferred to other old folks home. It is indeed touching and inspiring to come across such a generous and selfless person who dedicates his full time and money to help the less fortunate.

The Cultural Ambassador Committee would like to thank the participating companies, the volunteers and everyone who had contributed in one way or another (even through your kind thoughts or prayers). To view more photos of the event, please visit Texchem Group’s Official FB Page.

Glutinous rice, savoury spices and skilled hands to wrap the bamboo leaves – these are the key ingredients to make Bak Chang, also known as Zong Zhi. For those who are not familiar, Bak Chang is widely enjoyed during the Dragon Boat Festival (Duan Wu Jie) which falls on the lunar calendar fifth day of the fifth month to commemorate the death of ancient Chinese poet and minister Qu Yuan in Mi Luo River. Based on folktale’s story, the Chinese villagers then threw rice dumplings into the river to keep the fish and evil spirits away from his body, thus this became a tradition as to why the Chinese make sticky rice dumpling annually to honour this festival.

Glutinous Rice Dumpling ClassThere is always something special about homemade recipes which are passed down for generations to relive the fondest memories of your childhood, to evoke treasured experiences long forgotten, or simply bringing friends and family together.

For the record, making a Bak Chang is not easy task. We were fortunate to have Madam Chuah Pow Tay, a self-taught Master Chef at home and the loving mother of the organiser of this Cultural Ambassador event, Ms Chris Low, to share their family recipe and prepare us for the coming Dragon Boat Festival.

We arrived early in the morning of 26 May at Peace and Harmony Old Folk’s Home with pre-cooked ingredients (praise to the committees for preparing this a night before) and invaded the kitchen with Madam Chuah there to guide us on the steps. After all the ingredients have been cooked, we were ready to wrap the Bak Chang. For beginners, the hardest part was to wrap and hold them in a pyramid shape and ensure that the fillings do not fall through. However, after much effort, the 15 participants managed to wrap a total of over 100 Bak Chang! While waiting for the Bak Chang to be cooked, Madam Chuah taught us how to make Five-Spice Meat Roll (Lor Bak), a perfect appetiser which turned out delicious and unforgettable to everyone present.

Article by Sam Tze Mun (Texchem-Pack (M) Sdn Bhd)

By the end of the day, the class was filled with laughter and bloated stomachs, where all of us enjoyed the labours of our hard work and we went home content with our DIY Bak Chang and Lor Bak. Although it took 4 hours to make hundreds of them for the participants and the elderly residents of Peace and Harmony Home, they were definitely worth every ounce of our effort.

For more information on the delicious recipe for Bak Chang, please email Ms Chris Low: [email protected].

Cultural Ambassador Central Region Kicks of Their Activities For 2019

“Self-independence” and “Charity begins at home”. The Cultural Ambassador Committee – Central Region started 2019 activities with these magic words.

To get the ball rolling, during the fasting month in May , the committee members contributed RM110.00 as a start-up fund to purchase titbits namely kerepek pisang, kerepek ubi kurma and candy peanuts sourced from the Middle East to sell to Texchemers priced reasonably between RM2.00 to RM3.00. This activity aimed to create self-independence, entrepreneurship and business-minded thinking among the committee members and to generate income to drive CSR activities.

We learnt that it was not smooth sailing all the way, as the committee had to handle complaints by the “customers”. However, we took everything as a learning process on how to improve along the way. From the sale of the titbits, we made a profit of about RM290 and for this we thank our colleagues for your kind support. The selling of titbits shall be maintained throughout the year.

On 14 June, the Cultural Ambassador – CR organised their second activity. This activity was carried out to raise funds which shall be channelled to a needy home in December 2019. The charity drive called “Home Cooked Day @ Wisma Texchem” involved the committee members selling homemade nasi lemak and nasi minyak, bubur kacang and ice bandung at RM10.00 per set. The bubur kacang and ice bandung were prepared by our very own Angelia, Florence and Yana from Texchem Materials Sdn Bhd. We managed to sell 79 sets and made a profit of RM403.40. This project involved a lot of synergy from the committee as well as the volunteers and all the arrangements were carried out flawlessly; thanks to the committee members and volunteers’ commitment and skills.

On behalf of the Cultural Ambassador Committee, I would like to express my sincere thanks for the happy moments with all Texchemers and we shall strive harder for better results for our upcoming activities. I would also like to record a special thanks to the volunteers who helped made the event such a success.

Personal leadership is important as it helps to determine our desires, strengths and abilities. It makes our present situation better and help us shape a good future. Good leadership skills are important in running a business, as an employee with good leadership skills will be able to lead, make important decisions and carry out proper implementation in projects or businesses.

With this in mind, on 3 and 4 May 2019, Texchem Ladies’ Club (TLC) organised a 2-day workshop and training on “Winning Leadership Skills” for the female employees at Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang. We engaged Dr Alvin Tan from Prima Link Training & Consultancy to provide the training for a total of 25 Texchem ladies across all divisions with some travelling from our Kuala Lumpur and Johor office.

Dr Alvin Tan divided the participants into four groups. After each learning session, Dr Alvin will have a small activity for the groups to complete. The group that completes the given task the fastest and with the most accurate count will gain points for their group.

It was a fun and informative training program. We learnt about women leadership, how to understand our strengths and weaknesses, how to control our emotions, how emotional intelligent helps in workplace, how to break through our own boundaries and to set our own destiny. Although much was covered during the training, the most important part was learning to understand ourselves first. Only then can we set achievable goals, lead effectively and help each other when tasks are complicated.

The world today is very competitive. Having good leadership skills have become crucial in one’s personal and professional development. Leadership is an important function of management which helps an individual or a business maximise efficiency and to achieve goals.

Dr Alvin also gave us a quick test on understanding what kind of sensory preference each of us have. There are three kinds of sensory preference. Visual sensory are people who like to visualise things and they work more effectively through visualisation. An auditory person learns better through listening while kinesthetic people, are people who like to feel and the sense of touch will make them work effectively.

In additional, Dr Alvin taught us the way to read a person’s eye movements. By knowing how to do this, we can tell whether the person is telling the truth or otherwise.

The 2-day program was indeed interesting. Personally, I liked the debriefing after each activity as this was when Dr Alvin pointed out directly our mistakes and we were required to discuss and further improve ourselves for the next challenge.

Communication plays an important function in the workplace and in our daily life. However, some of us do struggle when communicating especially with strangers. In this training session, we were taught that, before we go into any topic, we should first build a rapport with the person whom we are speaking to. Mirroring the person’s posture, gesture, facial expression, tonality, words and even breathing are the keys to build rapport. Dr Alvin explained that, with the mirroring effect, one person tends to feel more connected and this is how rapport builds in and how we can communicate more easily with the person.

Quarterly Sharing Session by Yew Yoke Fah

Article by Teoh Yit Ming (Texchem Corporation Sdn Bhd)

“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life” – Dolly Parton

Yoke Fah shared with us the five steps to achieve a proper balance in life.

First, we need to define our needs and desires in life. Understand what we need and desire the most in our life. Different people have difference needs and desires. It may be travel, adventure, family, friends, health, knowledge and etc.

Second, prioritise them. Among one’s desires and needs, prioritise which comes first and which comes second and etc.

After prioritising, build a plan for it. Plan when you want to achieve your needs and set the appropriate timeline to reach your goals.

Fourth, time management and energy are important. Plan your schedule and follow the schedule set with discipline.

Lastly, review & revise. Sometimes, a plan may not go as smoothly as we wish and we might encounter some interruptions along the way. In this case, we will need to revise and re-plan our schedule to ensure that ultimately we reach our goal.

After the sharing from Yoke Fah, each of us also shared our perspective and experience on work life balance.

It was a fun and informative sharing session. I hope that after this session, those who attended will work towards having a good life balance as balance is the key to a happy and successful life. Let us instil positive rituals into our daily life today!

Work life balance is a term that describes the balance that a working individual needs between time allocated for work and other aspects of life for example personal interest, family, social or leisure activities. In order to be a happy and healthy person, work life balance is very important.

On 14 May 2019, Texchem Ladies’ Club invited Ms Yew Yoke Fah, CEO of Acumen Scientific Sdn Bhd to share her perspective on “Work Life Balance” to our ladies.

At the beginning of the session, Ms Yoke Fah asked whether we have encountered a situation whereby when we are working, we are thinking or planning where and when to go for a vacation and when we are on a vacation, we tend to reply texts or emails from work. The answer was clearly visible from our facial expressions. Yes, most of us have encountered either one of these situations before and this indicates that we are having a struggle in work life balance.

Yoke Fah further explain that, work life balance should be re-phrased to life balance. This is because work forms only a small part of our life. The rest of our life is filled with hobbies, self-development, friends, family and others. It is just a matter of how we allocate time for each and every areas of our life.

A balanced life is important as it will help us have a health body and mind, which ultimately leads to a happy and fulfilled life.

This year, Texchemers at Penang HQ celebrated Hari Raya Aidilfitri by savoring delicious cooking prepared by Hasna and Azahari, two of our Muslim colleagues. Hasna made laksa while Azahari prepared ketupat with serunding ayam. Kari pap ayam was also added to the menu where 70 Texchemers gathered to enjoy them for tea on 28 June 2019.

Before we tucked in, Texchemers were made to play the “test taste game”, whereby players were blindfolded and won’t know what they are eating until it goes into their mouth. Each department sent a representative and the players were required to consume 10 types of different tasting food consisting of seasonings, fruits and spices. The winner of this fun contest was Ms Catherine Siew and she won RM300 Texchem voucher for her department.

In line with one of Texchem’s business value “Health & Safety”, an Emergency Response Team (ERT) was formed at Wisma Texchem on 28 January 2019. The members of this team are made up of representatives from each office and are assigned different roles such as as Floor Warden, Floor Checker, Fire Squad Member, First Aider and Traffic Controller. The duties of these people are to guide Texchemers based at Wisma Texchem on fire safety evacuation procedures.

As part of the ERT program, a 1-day training on “Essential First Aid, CPR & AED” was conducted by Cert Academy on 19 June 2019. The purpose of this training was to provide essential knowledge and basic life support skills such as CPR, managing different types of wounds and bleeding and techniques of dressing and bandaging. In this training, we learned through theory and practical methodologies the following :• how to perform CPR• the importance of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to increase survival rate• the procedures to obtain Ambulance service• how to manage bleeding and wounds

A simulation/mock drill was included in this program to accelerate Texchemers’ understanding and managing of an accident scene. There were two lifelike simulation drills. Based on the emergency scenario given, one group was to act and another group would have to response to the scenario by accessing the “accident” scene, diagnose the “victim” and perform medical aid on the “injured”. With this simulation exercise, we learned how to handle complicated emergencies. This training provides useful knowledge to participants not only at the workplace but also in his/her daily life.
