38 FROM THE MINISTER
CURATES CORNERI have no idea what 2020 has in store but if it's anything like 2019 it willno doubt have plenty of really challenging times. I am increasingly awarehow my well-being is intrinsically linked not only to the well-being of mynearest and dearest, but also the well-being of my neighbours, my Churchcommunity, my countries (Britain and South Africa), the other nations ofthe world and indeed the very planet itself.
We live in an era which elevates the individual above all else. We areencouraged to celebrate our own unique stories, our own personal truth. There is a lot that is positive about this. If we are to love our neighbouras we love ourselves, we need to know and love ourselves.
But we can also so easily become self-absorbed to the point of beingconsumed by our own story in isolation from each other's stories. Theworld can feel very noisy, with everyone wanting to be heard, and veryfew people willing to listen, truly listen. It seems sometimes as if it is theloudest, most self-centred and potentially destructive individuals who endup being the 'King of the Castle'.
Likewise, it feels, at times, as if it is the loudest and most self-absorbed ofmy own emotions which rule the roost, overriding my good intentionsand causing me to slide all the way down a long snake in an emotionalgame of 'snakes and ladders'.
I'm the first to admit I need help from God if I am to come anywhereclose to being the person God created me to be.The person my familyand friends and Church and country and planet need me to be.This iswhy I start and end each day spending time in prayer. I find the mosteffective way of stilling my clamorous emotions, and destructive addictionto self-absorbed 'stinking thinking', is through the practice of CenteringPrayer.
Thomas Keating (1923-2018), the founder of the practice of CenteringPrayer, explained how meditation is linked to the healing of ourshortcomings. He called it the divine therapy: 'The only prayer you needto say is, “Help!” It's right to the point. It describes what we need. And

when it comes from a heart that is broken by its own failures, it movesGod to the very roots of the divine nature and God responds.
So perhaps this is the best way to start 2020, not with yet another list ofresolutions but rather with a cry from the heart as we acknowledge ourdeep-seated need for God's transforming love. Happy New Year!
