Chapter Directors Message
We want to thank all those that came out to the FL District Rally at the Worldgate Resort in Kissimmeeand especially those that worked the rally. If you didn't get a chance to attend, this year's theme was "APirate's Parley." There were a lot of pirates that came out. Attendance was around 1400 with over 40vendors! A Pirate Feast was held on Thursday night which was delicious. FL1-W Apopka and FL1-H2 Orlandocame together for Friday night dinner and also on Saturday for a luncheon of mini subs and chips. On Fridaynight we ate at Logan's Roadhouse down the road from the host hotel. Logan's Roadhouse sat us in the backin the Fireplace Room and we had a great time. Our waitress was exceptional. The rally site was alwaysbusy with things going on. Wings were always coming and going. Beautiful bikes, trikes, and trailers wereeverywhere. During closing ceremonies some FL1-Winners emerged. Ted won a set of tires from the RiderEducation drawing, and Diane Andberg and Mary Ann Long both won gift certificates from Walmart from theWorker's drawing. It was a fun weekend.
Let me start by saying that I had never been to Corky Bells in Palatka before the ride on Saturday. Ithought it was a buffet and wrote that in the Weekly Reminders. Well, oops! it's not a buffet. But, it is agreat restaurant where you order from a great menu! We had the salmon patties (thanks Glen for thesuggestion) and they were huge! Topped with a pink onion sauce that was divine. The hush puppies werebig and fresh and the cole slaw seasoned just right. We sat on a large deck overlooking the St. John's riverwatching the boat traffic. Gary Hoop had led us over some great country roads taking in the Floridacountryside. What a great ride up and an exceptional restaurant. ............At dessert time the thunderstarted in the distance. The storm moved in quickly from the northwest. We scattered like mice in thepresence of a cat. Some tried to beat the storm, some got stuck in it and had to park in the Family DollarTree parking lot for a while, and some worked on a surprising turn of events of a dead battery in the parkinglot. My goodness! What an adventure! In the end, we all made it home in good shape. It was a great dayand a great ride. We can't wait until we can go again. Thanks to all that came out for the nonsense!
This month you will hear a lot about our FL1-Wing Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast rally. It is onSaturday, April 28. We only have one rally a year and this is it. Hopefully you will be able to participate in itone way or another. Right now Connie Miller, our Rally Coordinator, is looking for bakers, or buyers, ofcakes. We need cakes donated for the Cake Walk. Please call her at 352-516-5180. She also is looking forfolks willing to do some small jobs from 10:00-2:00 on that Saturday. Please call her to find out what sheneeds that you might be able to provide or do. Four hours to give back to your chapter isn't too much to ask.She needs you. Thank you. This willingness-of-spirit is what makes our chapter great!
On other upcoming events the chapter has a Lunch Ride on Wednesday, April 11. Destination will beLake Harris Hideaway in Lake County. There are also two Tire Kicks where we meet at the restaurant at 6:30to share a supper; April 4 to the Moon Cricket Grill in Winter Garden and on April 18 to Froggers in Apopkaclose to where we meet for our rides. Both of these are on a Wednesday night. And of course, our MonthlyChapter Gathering at 4:30 on the second Saturday of every month at Perkin's Restaurant in Apopka wherewe tell jokes, share information, safety reminders, have some drawings available, and give out door prizes.Hope to see you there!
April looks like it is going to be a great month! We hope to see you along the way.
Happy Easter,Ted & Carolyn Russell

A Funny Thing Happened
Remember, youshould carry contactemergencyinformation, alongwith medications andallergies, readilyaccessible. Is yourFirst Aid kit in yourtrunk? If it’s in asaddle bag, youmight not be able toget to it. Also, always carry yourcell phone on yourperson, in a jacketpocket or on yourbelt in the event youget separated fromyour bike in anemergency situation, you can still call forhelp.
On Friday night I inspected my bike for the trip to Kissimmee. I had not had it out for a
couple of weeks, so I at least needed to check the air pressure in the tires. Because the
valve is ALWAYS at the twelve o’clock position, I put the bike on the center stand so I can
easily spin the rear wheel. While I was rotating the tire, I found something that just didn’t
look right. Here are some pictures of what I saw.
You may not be able to see it in the newsletter, but the tread was separating from thecord. (Send me an email if you would like a copy of the pictures [email protected]). Ihad at least a few thousand miles left on this tire. I have seen other bikes that were ridingdirectly on the cord, so I did not worry too much about getting to the rally and having thetire replaced. Thanks to Allen and Terry Foote for following me in case I had a flat. I pulledright up to the tire trailer as soon as I got there and stimulated the economy. I wantedsome safety chrome, but bought a tire instead. Thanks also goes out to Brian Miller forputting the tire in his car for me. I want to use it as a teaching tool (and evidence atcourt?).
The bottom line to my story is that we should routinely do a T-CLOCK inspection prior toevery ride. At our gathering this month I will have a T-CLOCK inspection sheet available foryou to put on the wall in your garage. I strongly encourage you to keep it handy as areminder and then actually use it.
A Google search shows that I am not the only person that has a concern with this tire.A strongly worded letter will be sent to Metzler tire.

If we were to try and choose just one word to describe our 2012 Rally/Convention it would be FANTASTIC!From the folks attending, to the great weather, to the vendors and to the hotel staff, this event was one forthe history books! If some had problems and went away disappointed we apologize and promise to try andmake it better in 2013. Our goal is always to provide the best event possible keeping FUN as the number oneconsideration. Gina and I say THANK YOU to our TEAM. Without them we could not accomplish all the thingsneeded to put on an event of this magnitude...registration for almost 1400 folks over the 3 days, coordinatingover 40 vendors, feeding over 450 folks on Thursday, providing ice cream for 450+ on Friday, seating for650+ at Closing Ceremonies on Saturday, providing competitions and securing judges, scheduling seminars, and all the behind the scenes activities in creating a FUN event for the participants. Thanks go out to eachChapter Participant who assisted in manning a work area during the event. Thank you to the folks whojudged our competitions! Thanks to those who presented seminars. Thank you, thank you, thank you toeveryone who helped in some way to make the 2012 FL District Rally/Convention FANTASTIC!!
Congratulations go to the new Florida District Couple of the Year, Dana and Jo Voight (FL2-G North FortMyers). We had four couples participating in the Couple of the Year selection. They all did an excellent job!We know that all couples will continue to represent their Home Chapter proudly and continue to make theirChapter and the Florida District proud. Thank you! Being chosen as your Chapter's Couple of the Year is thehighest honor in GWRRA! Thanks to Rick & Madalena Buck, the outgoing Florida District Couple of the Year, for representing Florida so well last year.
All three winners of the 2012 Gold Wing Raffle drawings [(1) - 2012 Gold Wing, (2) - $1,000, and (3) -$500] have claimed their prize. Congratulations to the winners! Thanks to all who sold these raffle ticketsthroughout the year making way for the best Rider Education Program in the nation - keeping Florida #1!Congratulations to FL2-G (North Fort Myers) for being the Winner of the Most Tickets Sold with over 7,500!The new tickets are being printed now and will be "Yellow Jacket" yellow this year. Rick Northrop, DistrictRider Educator, will have the 2013 Gold Wing raffle tickets available soon!
The kudos keep coming with the announcement of FL1-M (Clearwater) being named District Chapter ofthe Year at Closing Ceremonies. Unknown to them at the time, we could tell they were surprised and pleased.Shortly after this announcement, Bob and Nan Shrader, Region A Directors, spoke and proceeded to namethem Region A Chapter of the Year! Wow! Great job Tracy and Sharon Dunn and to your Chapter! Theoutgoing Florida Chapter of the Year, FL1-L2 Wesley Chapel, has represented us well. FL1-L2 is still thereigning International Chapter of the Year until Wing Ding and hopefully this honor will be bestowed on FL1-M! Wouldn't it be great if our Florida Chapter made it a "three-peat" at Wing Ding?!?!?! Two Silver levelChapter of the Year presentations were also made at Closing Ceremonies...one to FL1-A Tampa and one toFL2-G North Fort Myers. FL1-A Tampa was the Hot Potato Winner. Lots of winners! Congratulations! We dosincerely appreciate all the assistance and support from all of you. We know that without you this would notbe FUN nor would it be possible!
Florida's event has just started the Rally season. Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and then MississippiDistrict rallies are all upcoming Region A events. Also, we have Wing Ding in July, Region A Rally in Eufaula inSeptember, and in between we have many other FUN events across the country. Hopefully you will be able toattend some. Don't forget the Chapter events throughout our District. Let's support each other and alwaysremember our main goal in all of these events should be to have FUN! Things may not go according toplans...stuff happens. Just remember we are Friends for FUN, Safety, and Knowledge! Now...let's go havesome FUN!

GWRRA Florida District Convention
Well, the Florida District Rally in Kissimmee seemed to be a big success this year. Diane and I didn’t
stay at the hotel, but we made trips down there on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Thursday evening they
served a big chicken dinner for everyone who pre-registered for the 3-day event. This year it was better
than ever! There was ample food, we sat at big tables with tablecloths, and there were waiters who bused
the tables.
On Friday, we worked at the registration desk. We were told that pre-registration was down about 5%
this year. During our 2-hour shift at the north security gate on Saturday, however, Diane and I sold 56 day
passes to people walking into the vendor area. Ken Long and Allen Foote sold 36 passes at the south gate,
so that made 92 day passes sold (for $1380) in just two hours. The extra day-pass sales made up for some
of the shortfall in pre-registration.
Since I felt day-pass sales had been brisk on Saturday, I walked back out to the vendor area as they
were closing down on Saturday afternoon to talk to a couple of the remaining vendors. I asked what they
thought about attendance this year. The guy at LightThemUp.com said he had been coming to this rally for
many years and he thought his business this year was about the same as usual. Mountainman.com (pin-
striping) said he felt his business might have been a little off. I noticed that he was still working while
others were disassembling their tents though, so he had last minute work to do. I was also told that the
lady that did the embroidery had to work until after 10:30 on Friday night to get caught up from the day’s
orders. She was also busy on Saturday when I walked by.
There has been talk about relocating the rally to a different hotel next year. The location for next year
has not yet been decided. Apparently, the Radisson World Gate has actually been in receivership for several
years. About three months ago there was a major change. The Radisson name was dropped and all the
staff were replaced. The new name is the World Gate Resort. It is not clear whether we will be able to use
this facility next year or not. The new General Manager spoke to the GWRRA group at the closing ceremony
on Saturday and said that he “hoped to see us back next year” – so, we’ll see.
The closing ceremony started at 7:00 PM and ran until about 8:45 PM when the winner of the Gold Wing
was announced. The winner was not there, but he was contacted by phone. He was happy he won – he said
he had purchased “a bunch of tickets.” FL1-Wingers did win a few things. Ted scored big (see the CD’s
article) and Paul & Diane and Ken & Mary Ann won $10 gift certificates to Wal-Mart for their volunteer work.

Stress
We all have stress in our lives. And, we all need some way of relieving that stress, even if it is justtemporarily. For me, that is my motorcycle. There is just something about climbing on your bike, lookingout over the open road, feeling the wind, the sights and smells that just melts the stress away. When youadd good friends and good food it becomes the perfect break in our hectic lives. And, that is what FL1-W isall about. Every month we schedule our Chapter Gathering, formal rides, lunch rides, tire kicks and someimpromptu get-togethers to help you leave those problems behind and have a good time. I don’t knowabout you, but this helps me hit the reset button and gives me a better perspective on life. So, take a breakand come join us for some fun. Even if you can’t join us, please find those moments of peace and take abreak from the stresses in your life. And, we will see you next time.

Let’s Go For A Ride!
May is a busy month with holidays on two of the four week-ends. We have Mother’s Day on Sundaythe 13 and Memorial week-end starting on the 26. We thought it best not to schedule rides for either oneof them, so our long chapter ride for May will be to the St. Augustine Lighthouse Museum on Saturday,May 5.
As you may recall, the St. Augustine Lighthouse ride was originally planned for February 25, but waspostponed due to my being out of town. Since we are now doing the ride on May 5, we will make it a FL1-W Cinco de Mayo celebration! Pedro sez “Saddle up, Amigos”!
After some discussion at the last FL1-W Team meeting, we decided to put off the Chapter 3 day ride tothe Florida panhandle until October. Please look at your calendars and give me some feed-back on thebest week-end for you if you plan on doing this ride. We will do a Friday thru Sunday, so you will needonly one day off to come along!
As I write this month’s article, I have just dried off from our ride to Palatka. It was a “frog strangler”for a while on the way back! But the real story was my dead battery as we came out of the restaurant.Batteries are amazing to me. The bike started fine in the morning and after both of our rest stops on theway up. After lunch and 100 miles of charging for the day, it was dead! Hmmm. How is that possible? Many thanks to Ted for having cables and giving me a jump start (in the rain no less)! I learned avaluable lesson – get some jumper cables for the bike! Ted won’t always be there to bail me out!
