• Population – 7 628 103• EU – 2007• Climate - moderate and transitional-continental huge temperature variation in swine producing
regions + 40˚ C / - 30˚C• 36 890 accessible sows in 37 farms• Traditional pork consuming people

Number of pigs
No pigs
The total number of farms decrease mainly
due to closing of small farms
Distribution of industrial (accessible) pigs in different types of farms
23 farms manage ≈ 90% of industrial sows
Distribution of swine genetics in Bulgaria
• Number of sows – 2700• Genetic - farm № 41• One place, breeder fattener farm• Number of batches – 8• Batch management - 4 days• Type of flow – all in, all out • Health status: no PRRS

Vaccination against PCV2 - WHY?
• Increased % ”lightweight” pigs, especially in fattening period
• Mortality rate - slight increase in fatteners (2%)
• Single cases of PDNS
• Necropsy – stomach ulcers
• Performance lower than TOP DanBred farms
• Laboratory – serology
Vaccination against PCV2 - WHY?
First choice - CIRCOVAC on piglets - WHY?
Farm performance before vaccination
• No visible reproductive disorders • Farrowing Rate >90%• ADWG in growers – 0,566 kg• ADWG in fatteners – 0,983 kg
CIRCOVAC - Piglet MASS vaccination - PROTOCOL
All pigs at age 29-100 days
• Dose - 0,5 ml, IM • Start – February 2009
CIRCOVAC - Piglet REGULAR vaccination - PROTOCOL
• Dose - 0,5 ml, IM • Time of vaccination - at weaning (29 days)
After mass sow vaccination – piglets vaccination was postponed to 7 weeks of age
After mass sow vaccination – piglets vaccination was postponed to 7 weeks of age
After good piglets results – sow vaccination - WHY?
• A lot of published data about influence of PCV2 on reproduction.
After good piglets results – sow vaccination - WHY?
• Very good actual farrowing rate, but opportunity to reach TOP results in number of born/weaned piglets
CIRCOVAC – Reproduction herd MASS vaccination - PROTOCOL
Sows, gilts, boars *• Start – end of July 2009• Dose - 2 ml, IM, 2 injections, 3 weeks apart• One further injection at least 2 weeks before
farrowing*in mass vaccination some animals received 1 injection, another - 2 and other -3
CIRCOVAC - Sow REGULAR vaccination - PROTOCOL
• 1 dose = 2 ml, IM • One injection at each gestation at least 2
weeks before farrowing
CIRCOVAC - gilts REGULAR vaccination - PROTOCOL
Primary vaccination:• Dose - 2 ml IM, 2 injections, 3 weeks apart,
second injection at least 2 weeks before mating
Booster • One injection at least 2 weeks before each
farrowing

CIRCOVAC - Piglets & sow vaccination – WHY?
CIRCOVAC - Sow & piglets – REGULAR vaccination – PROTOCOL
• Start – December 2009• Sow – One injection at least 2 weeks before
each farrowing • Gilts – Primary vaccination- 2 injections in 3
weeks intervals, Booster – 1 inj. 2 weeks before farrowing
• Piglets – one injection at 7 weeks of age • Boars – every 6 months

Data collection and analysis
• Check list • Farm software – Agro Soft
No control group (control – farm parameter before CIRCOVAC)
• No revolution in the farm from 2008• Improvement of management programs• Use of self replacement gilts – no import of
gilts, only boars• Changes in ventilation system
The farm is “live” and dynamic
Swine farm “Brashlen”
First (visible) observations :
Disappeared stomach ulcers
Very well uniform piglets
Benefits of CIRCOVAC - piglet vaccination

In farm “Brashlen” CIRCOVAC :
• increases the reproductive performances – number of live born piglets
• improves the pig growth from birth to slaughter• reduces the duration to slaughter• helps for homogenous pig batches• provides sustained protection of piglets as from the
suckling phase• restore mortality rate• preventing PCVD clinical signs
