il <t L - pt* •i Ir r"> OLD AND NEW -By Murray K, Rogers' Hope College IN THIS ISSUE: ALUMNI NEWS A STEP FORWARD LETTERS TO EDITOR Thanks for the "vote of confi- dence" extended me during the ANCHOR election last week. In this special alumni edition we are featuring news of former Hope- ites. Several hundred copies of this edition will be mailed to alumni of the college in an effort to obtain subscriptions. A letter will accom- pany each ANCHOR. Those sub- scribing to the ANCHOR during this drive will receive the publica- tion throuRhout this school year, and the full year to come, for only one dollar. In the fall of 193;), and succeeding years, a more ex- tended drive will be started. Holland, Michigan. All sub- scriptions will be given prninpl at- tention. One of Joe Esther's dreams came true last fall when the co-op boarding house made its debut. Ac- cording to the January, issue of the ANCHOR, this was also the realization of another Hopeite in a modified form. "A boarding dub has been formed through the energy of Mr. Mills. Il consists of about twenty students. This is an experiment in our college a n d if successful may be followed by others." "The long-expected college Clee club is in existence at last. The child is not yet well matured, but already has some color and tone and color of tone. NNith I'rof. J. H. Nykerk as nurse it will soon make its influence felt in the social world." (January. IH'MI) I have often wondered :*bout the love affairs of our predecessors— especially those on the campus. Maybe this joke reprinted from the ANCHOR of March, IKs'.i, will give you a different slant on the old I lopeites. Student reading Virgil: "Three times 1 strove to cast my arms about her neck, and—that's as far as I got, professor." Professor: "Well, I think that was quite far enough." What I'd like to know is: 1. Where did he try il? 2. Can the place be used the >ear 'round? How many others were there? DRAMA ( LASS WILL PRESENT ANNUAL PLAY "School for Scandal'' to Be Given at Carnegie MRS. IH KKKK A(iAIN I)IKi:( TS I'KKKOKMAN( E "Tlii- Schon] for Scandal," a euni- edy by Sheridan, will be presented by the drama class of Mope College on Feb. 14 and I") in Carnegie gym- nasium. The play is a- satire on scandal mongers and is filled with spark- ling wit and humor. The plot cen- ters around the family of Surface and developes with a maize of in- trigue and misunderstanding. Sev- eral love tangles are also supplied by Sir Peter Teazle and his friends, who are ^continually falling in and out of love. The cast is supported by such members of th; ilrnma rla.'.s as Henry Kuizenga, (Jeorge Douma, Jay Push, John M. Vander Meulen, I'M win (inmsdt, John II. Vander Meulen, John Piet. Albert Mansen, Donald Kooiman and William (ias- ton. Feminine roles are played by Margaret Van Raalte, Mina Pecker, Dorothy Kckerson, Dorothea Van Saun. Margaret Dregman and Fieamu- Pierpont. Mis. Durfee is director and superintends the daily rehearsaN. Since the actors will appear in IKth century costumes, and since the play is int'-resting in content, the drama class is hoping for a large attendance at the gymnasium on the part of the x sStudent body. The admission cost will be placed at a figure suitable toithe financial condition of the average student. PEACE CONTEST Dr. J. B. Nykerk has an- nounced the coming peace ora- torical contest in which most of the colleges of Michigan are expected to participate. The finals of the contest will be held sometime in April. The contest is open for men only and those who are planning to enter are asked to see Dr. Ny- kerk or Ruth Verhey. Hinkamp, col- lege pastor, recently announced the following a s a summary of the in- formation gathered by him regard- ing the religious status and vocih- tional iire.'Vit-iiCes of the members of the freshman class, based on personal conferences held with lo.S new students. Those coming from the city of Holland number 51; those from the rural route.-; number IS; those from outside of Holland's postal jurisdic- tion number H4. According to the decision made last week by the committee in charge, of which Joe Esther is chairman, the commission charged is five cents on every book sold for $1.2') or less, and ten cents on every book whose sale price is in excess of that amount. The system of exchange, as de- cided upon by the committee, is based upon a receipt issued to the owner of the book and containing the owner's signature and the amount he desires for his text. The book will likewise contain his name and the selling price. After the demand for books has declined, the committee announces that it will be prepared to check the owner's receipt with a dupli- cate on file, then to redeem the re- ceipt with either the designated price minus the commission or with the unsold volume. It is expected that the exchange will remain open every school day between 10:1)0-11:00 A.M. and 1 :()()- 2:00 P.M. There is some likelihood, il was announced, that the ex- change will take over the ordering of second-hand books from distant firms at the request of instructors after the opening of the next se- mester. DISASTER AVERTED Some students and alumni of the college received quite a shock when they looked over the 1934-35 Hope basketball schedule. The home game with Calvin, another denominational school, being supported by the Christian Reformed church, was set for Sunday, January 13. However, all fears were dismissed when the mistake was discovered and the date changed to next Tuesday, Feb- ruary ;'). ANCHOR JOINS ASSOCIATION National Syndicate Includes 400 Colleges PLAN ADOPTED UNANIMOUSLY LAST MEETING "Pledgeship" Period Is Substituted By Group SENIORS PROPOSED CHANGE THURSDAY Arrangements have been made enabling the Hope College' AN- CHOR to join the Associated Col- | legiate Press, Murray K. Rogers, I editor, has announced. This associ- ! ation is the largest of its kind, in- 1 eluding slightly less than 400 col- l lege newspapers. Only colleges may j enter into the organization which 1 have permanent headquarters in I t h e Department of Journalism, Uni- versity of Minnesota. The service offered by the A.C.P. are: The making of a yearly analy- sis of each publication which is a member of the association; the con- ducting of a question-and-answer bureau; the extending of help to all organized groups interested in the advancement of college journal- ism; the holding of a national con- vention; the promotion of research studies into all problems of college (Continued on P a g e F o u r ) Alumni Prominent In Many Fields II listc I SSI ere is the "College News" as m1 in THE ANCHOR, June, "—No Flowers." I don't know what it means ei- ther, but it's a good idea if T H E ANCHOR ever runs short of copy. And, to think that "V" work was investigated several weeks ago. "The Y.M.C.A. has never been in better condition in every way, than it is at the present. Their room has been so crowded during the past few meetings that some have suggested securing a larger place for holding the meetings."— THE ANCHOR, October, 188!). The new "name line" ordered for this issue of the ANCHOR was late, but will appear two weeks from today. "Don" Vanden Hell, '."ll, attended the 1 lope-11 illsdale game recently as the guest of Howard Teusink. "Don" has a position in the Eng- lish department of (irandville. He is also acting as the debate coach for that school, and is a very suc- cessful coach due to his personal experience in this field. * * * "Reo" Stryker, '34, spent a week- end on the campus recently as the guest of her sisters at Voorhees hall. Maggie Kole and Ethel Leestma, both of the Class of '33, were en- tertained at the home of Sally Sterken during vacation. Maggie Kol^ is still teaching in Grand Rap- ids and Ethel is taking post gradu- ate work at Calvin. 'I b e Knickerbocker Literary fra- ternity permanently abolished in- formal initiation last Thursday night and has substituted a con- structive pledgeship program cen- tering around the fundamental principles of the organization. The plan will go into effect immediate- ly, according to Elmer Wissink, president. "The move rather came as a sur- prise to many of the fellows pres- ent," said one of the influential members of the society in an inter- view with an ANCHOR reported, "but the motion was passed unani- mously." Senior members of the fraternity proposed the motion through Lloyd Chapman, spokesman, who stated in part: "As a rule, new members have been accepted into fraternities by means of their ability to with- stand physical punishment and hu- miliation during informal initiation, rather than for their literary, scho- lastic, and social qualifications which are later developed by the fraternity. "We believe the best way of making a pledge realize the signi- ficance of true fraternity life on Hope's campus is to abolish infor- mal initatien as a permanent pol- icy and to substitute a pledge term which will be beneficial, not only to the pledges but also to other mem- bers of the fraternity. This pledge term will consist of a weekly pro- gram of comprehensive study of the constitution of the fraternity, and preparation of weekly papers and reports, all centering around the fundamental principles of ideal fraternity life. "The brutalness so often found in hazing will be abolished, and we feel sure," Chapman stated, "that pledges will assume a better atti- tude toward the fraternity there- by." Although no definite program has been arranged, two committees were appointed by the president to complete plans as soon as possible. One will consider a temporary pol- icy for the present year, while the other will devise a permanent sys- tem of pledgeship. The senior men proposing the plan expressed the opinion that the new system will create a better feeling generally within the society, while the pledges expressed satis- faction over the adoption of the plan. Rev. and Mrs. Martin Klooster- man, both former students, visited on the campus recently before go- ing to Alberta, Canada, where Rev. Kloosterman has been given his first call.
