Weight loss diets: Which one is the best for you?BY TANYA DAVIS [email protected]

Was your New Year’s resolution to fi nd a diet plan that will work for you?

As you con-sider diet plans, be careful not to choose a fad diet. Most people go on and off fad diets numerous times in their lives and fall into the yo-yo syndrome of dropping weight followed by gaining weight. The consequence of yo-yo dieting is that you lower your metabolism and end up at a heavier weight than when you started. Fad diets don’t really teach you anything about behavior or lifestyle change that can lead to lasting weight loss.

Losing weight is a simple formula: Calories in minus

calories out equals weight loss, weight gain or main-tenance. Diet pills, detox plans or supplements can-not change that formula.

In order to lose weight, you have to eat fewer calories and be more active. Just how do you know if an eating plan is healthy and sustainable?

Experts say a sound weight loss diet plan should:Q Include physical activity Q Allow a variety of foods from all the food groups QPromote slow and steady weight loss QInclude portion control Q Allow snacks between meals QNot rely heavily on sup-plements or special foods Q Include small portions of your favorite foods and beverages Q Recommend drinking plenty of water Q Be a plan that you can stick with for a lifetime

Once you know how to determine whether a weight

loss eating plan is healthy, you’ll need to narrow your choice down to one that suits your own lifestyle.

Evaluate the plan to be sure it matches the way you like to eat and exercise. Is this an eating or physical activity plan that you think you can stay on for several months to achieve your weight loss goal?

Look for plans that pro-mote foods that are fi ber-rich, like soups, and have

adequate protein, fruits, and vegetables. These foods fi ll you up and reduce food cravings to help you stick to your eating plan without feeling deprived.

Some people prefer a diet plan that calls for specifi c foods and portion sizes to help them stay on track. Others like the fl exibility of making their own food choices. As long as the diet plan includes a variety of healthy food — fruits, veg-

etables, beans, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean pro-tein — either type can work.

And fi nally, make sure the eating plan allows you enough food and calories. Women should not generally go below 1,200 calories per day, and men should not go

below 1,500 calories per day. For additional informa-

tion on weight loss diets, call Texas A&M AgriLife Exten-sion Service, Wise County,at 940-627-3341.

2017 is going to be amazing!BY GERRY [email protected]

“ N o w go and be amazing!”

I simply spoke the phrase that popped into my head, and it may have changed the course of my life.

I was sitting on a bench overlooking the Trinity River on an unseasonably warm December day in 2014 (much like we have had in the past week or so). I was recording

the introductory episode of my brand new podcast, “Your Church Matters with Dr. Gerry Lewis,” that would be launching in January 2015.

I had been telling a little bit of my story, by way of intro-duction, and my plans and dreams for this new podcast that would remind pastors and church leaders that, “No matter where you are, your church matters to God and your ministry IS signifi cant.”

I signed off with, “Now go and be amazing.”

Two years and 92 episodes later, that’s still the fi nal tag of every episode. I am so con-vinced that I am supposed to be amazing and share

amazing, that I developed a new personal mission state-ment in October 2016: “I guide explorers along their next steps toward amazing.”

Whether it’s through a newspaper column, blog, podcast, writing/develop-ing resources or personal coaching and consulting, my purpose is to walk alongside those who believe amaz-ing is possible and who are willing to go on a journey of exploration to discover it.

As a follower of Jesus, I believe that we are most amazing when we are amazed by God and join Him in His amazing activ-ity in the world. So, when I

encourage a pastor, church leader, or other Christ-fol-lower to go and be amazing, that is the framework in which I’m operating.

But I also know that just about everyone has an idea of what amazing looks like, both in personal and work life. And while I personally believe that a life that is not faith directed will fall short of its full amazing potential, there are some things that will keep anyone from their next steps toward amaz-ing, regardless of their faith perspective.

I offer two roadblocks here for your consideration:

1. You don’t believe amaz-

ing is really possible. You believe life is about

what happens to you. You believe that life is directed by fate or karma and that the best that you can hope for is a bit of luck. You seri-ously underestimate the power of your choices.

2. You are not willing to explore.

You are risk-adverse. You fear the unknown more than you fear the status quo. You avoid anything that takes you out of your comfort zone or requires you to learn something new. You are trying to navigate life looking in the rearview mir-ror of your past rather than

through the windshield of the road ahead.

You cannot choose what will happen to you in 2017, but you can choose how you will respond. You can choose to believe that your life mat-ters to God and join Him in amazing. You can choose to risk the adventure of the road ahead and join other explorers on the journey.

Will your 2017 be amaz-ing? You get to decide.

Life Matters

Lichens won’t hurt trees but could indicate dying branchesBY NEIL [email protected]

Dear Neil: Do I need to be worried about the fl uffy moss that’s growing on some of the branches of my pecan trees?

Those are probably gray-green lichens, and if so, they’re a tandem growth of funguses and algae nurtur-ing one another. They also will develop on boulders, so they’re obviously not parasitic. I will say, how-ever, from a life’s career of observing lichens, they do seem to be more common on branches that are dead or dying. It wouldn’t hurt to have a certifi ed arborist look at your trees.

Dear Neil: We planted shell ginger plants in the ground in our landscape. I thought they were in a pro-tected spot, but they burned badly in the cold. Will we need to replace them?

It appears that there are still green leaves in spite of the cold damage, so they’ll come back if nothing worse hits them this winter. Or

at least that would be my guess based on your small pho-tos. You’ll see shell ginger most com-monly listed as a Zone 8 plant, so it’s not unexpected that it would have been hurt or killed in much of Texas with the December cold.

Dear Neil: A construction truck knocked the bark off a mature live oak approxi-mately halfway around the trunk. I am in contact with the company, and they are willing to help save it. What steps should I take?

Contact a certifi ed arbor-ist at once. Take photos of the tree from several angles and print them for future reference. Also take a photo of the entire tree with the sun behind you to docu-ment its vigor and comple-ment of leaves at the time of the accident. You’ll be able to compare those pho-tos against photos six or 12

months from now. The arborist will be able

to assess the magnitude of the damage and determine if any corrective trimming of the bark needs to be done. (It probably will.) It will probably need to be sealed to protect against insect and disease invasion. If it were my tree, I would probably get the company to agree that no fi nal decision would be made for at least one year, just to be sure the tree is on the road to recovery by then. Trees usually can heal themselves when half or less of the bark is lost.

Dear Neil: We are going to have to have foundation leveling done. The bid price includes digging the exist-ing shrubs out, setting them aside for a few days and then replanting them. What do I need to tell the crew in order to have the best chance of the shrubs’ surviving?

That all depends on the types of shrubs, how many times they’ve been pruned and reshaped and how old they are. It also depends on

the ability of the foundation crew to dig them carefully. That’s probably not their greatest skill set.

If the shrubs are more than fi ve or 10 years old, they probably won’t fi t back together very well, so you might be happier starting with new, vigorous plants and maybe even a new design. If you do decide to recycle them, trim them to compensate for roots lost in the digging.

Dear Neil: I have man-aged to nurse a moth orchid along since it was given to me in bloom last Valentine’s Day. It’s grown three new leaves, and now I’m wonder-ing if it might produce more fl owers for me?

That’s a very good rate of growth, so yes, it sounds like you should have every rea-son to expect it to produce one or more fl ower stalks this late winter or spring. They tend to bloom every year about the same time.

Dear Neil: Can I trim a purple sage that’s grown too tall? If so, when and by how

much? You can take up to one-

third of the stem growth off a Texas purple sage (ceniza), and late January or early February would be the best time. Use hand tools, rather than doing a formal shearing. Do consider, too, replacing it with one of the dwarf sage selections. It’s going to try to regrow to the same size.

Dear Neil: What can be done to eliminate three acres of goatheads? Our grand-daughter and her husband have a new house, and they say it is inundated with goatheads. Their dogs are miserable.

Many times, people ask simply about “stickers” or “burs,” and I’m not sure whether they’re talking about goatheads or the far more common grassburs. Since you were so specifi c, I’ll tackle goatheads.

They are a broadleafed weed with ferny-looking leaves. They are also warm-season weeds, meaning that they germinate, grow and die, to complete their life cycle all

in one growing season. Your relatives can apply

a pre-emergent weedkiller two weeks prior to the aver-age date of the last killing freeze in their area, then repeat it 90 days later. The one to use for non-grassy weeds would be Portrait granules. They can also apply a broadleafed weed-killer spray to kill existing goathead plants during the growing season.

However, they need to read and follow label direc-tions carefully, to avoid dam-aging trees and shrubs that share the same soil with the weeds. They could use a bur-lap bag partially fi lled with sawdust ballast for weight to pick up the seeds that are out in the lawn now.

Q

Have a question you’d like Neil to consider? Mail it to him in care of the Wise County Messenger, P.O. Box 149, Decatur, TX 76234 or email him at [email protected]. Neil regrets that he cannot reply to ques-tions individually.

The thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of the neck, produces a hormone that plays a major role in regulating metabolism. When levels of this hormone fall, the body slows and affected individuals may experience fatigue, fuzzy-headedness, weight gain, cold hands, and dry skin. Women of all ages are more likely than men to have abnormal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and women over age 60 are likely to have non-specific symptoms that delay diagnosis. Moreover, up to 60 percent of individuals with hypothyroidism are unaware that they have a thyroid problem because they have not been tested. With this in mind, women who experience weight gain, fatigue, and sensitivity to cold are advised to undergo a blood test. Let your doctor know if you have had any tests in which you were given radioactive materials or had X-rays that used iodine dye within the last 4 to 6 weeks. If you have had iodine contrast material before having a thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test, your test results may not be correct. To schedule an appointment, please call 940-626-8008.
