CHAPTER ONE The Observances of Rajab & Its Virtues

This chapter deals with the virtues of the blessed month of Rajab and the ob-servances relating to it.

It should be known that the months of Rajab, Shacb¡n and Rama¤¡n have anabsolute excellence and there are many traditions which mention their virtues.1

The Apostle of Allah ( ¥  ) is reported to have said that “Rajab is the great monthof Allah. No other month equals it in sanctity and merit. During this month

fighting against the infidels is prohibited. Indeed Rajab is the month of Allah,Shacb¡n is my month, and Rama¤¡n is the month of my ummah. Surely, whoeverfasts a day of Rajab secures Allah’s greatest pleasure, distances himself from the

wrath of Allah, and one of the gates of hell is shut closed for him.”2

It is related from Imam M£s¡ al-K¡¨im ( c a  ) that he said, “For those who fasta day of Rajab, the fire of hell recedes from them a distance of a year’s journey.

And whoever fasts three days of Rajab is certain to enter Paradise.”3

In another narration, the same Imam said, “Rajab is a river in paradise, much whiter than milk and much sweeter than honey. Whoever fasts a day of Rajab,

will be given a drink from that river by Allah, the Almighty and Glorious.”4

Imam Jacfar al-¯¡diq ( c a  ) is reported to have said that the Apostle of Allah ( ¥  )said, “Rajab is the month of  istighf¡r (seeking forgiveness) for my ummah. There-fore, plead for God’s forgiveness often during this month, for Allah is all-for-giving and all-merciful. Rajab is called al-A¥abb (effusion) because the mercy of

Allah pours fourth abundantly upon my ummah during this month. So say often,5

THE COMMON DEVOTIONS OF R  AJAB

Shaykh ¯ad£q reports1 with reliable isn¡d from S¡lim that he said,

I entered upon Imam Jac

far al-¯¡diq ( c

a  ) in the month of Rajab while therestill remained some days for the month to end. On seeing me, he said,‘S¡lim, have you fasted at all during this month?’ I said, ‘No, by Allah, Oson of the Apostle of Allah.’ He said to me, ‘You have missed a thaw¡b  (i.e. reward) whole full extent is known to none except Allah, the Almighty and Glorious. Allah has exalted this month and given it a stupendous sanc-tity, taking it upon Himself to honour those who fast it.’ I said to him, ‘Oson of the Apostle of Allah, if I fast some of the remaining days of thismonth, will I attain some of the thaw¡b of those who have fasted in it?’He said, ‘S¡lim, whoever fasts a single day of the latter part of Rajab, that

will save him from the severity of the throes of death, from the horrorsencountered after death, and from the torments of the grave. Whoeverfasts two days of the latter part of this month will cross over the ¯ir¡§ (thebridge over hell) with ease. And whoever fasts three days of the latter partof this month will be secure from the terrors and calamities of the Day of the greatest terror and will be granted immunity from hell.’

It should be known that much merit has been ascribed to fasting in Rajab. It isstated in a report that those who cannot fast in Rajab due to illness or weakness

should glorify Allah by reciting the following tasb¢¦ hundred times a day.2

 The Common Devotions of Rajab

As for the devotions pertaining to Rajab, they are of two kinds: (1) the devotions which are performed throughout the month and are not meant for any particularday of it; [(2) the devotions meant for specific days and nights of this month.]

There are several observances pertaining to the first kind:

1 Fa¤¡’il al-Ashhur , 18. ¯ad£q’s Am¡l¢ , 15, h 7, thence in Bi¦¡r , xciv, 32, b 55, h 6 and Was¡’il, x,475, b 26, h 13886. Raw¤at al-W¡ c i¨¢n , ii, 396.

2 ¯ad£q’s Am¡l¢ , 538, Fa¤¡’il al-Ashhur , 29; and Thaw¡b , 58, thence in Iqb¡l , 681, Bi¦¡r , xciv, 31,

b 55, h 1, and Was¡’il, x, 483, b 27, h 13905.

Glory be to the magnificentGod. Glory to Him, for otherthan whom glorification is notfitting. Glory to the Mighti-est and the Noblest. Glory toHim who dons honour andmight and is worthy of it.

(8) Sayyid Ibn ±¡w£s reports1 this supplication from Mu¦ammad b. Dhakw¡n, who was known as Sajj¡d, due to his prolonged prostrations. So much did he use

to prostrate and weep during his prostrations that he lost his eye-sight. Thisnarrater says, “I said to Imam Jacfar al-¯¡diq ( c a  ), ‘May I be made your ransom. This is the month of Rajab.  The narrator says, “As the Imam recited this supplication in an entreating man-ner, he gently held his beard with his left hand while moving the index finger of his right hand. Then he added,

Among the virtues of this observance is expiation of many sins. It is men-tioned that when someone who has offered this prayer dies, on the first night of his burial God Almighty sends the reward for it in the most beautiful of forms,

with a bright and gracious face, to greet him. Speaking in an eloquent manner,it says to him, “My friend, congratulations for having been delivered from every hardship and suffering.” “Who are you?’ he asks it, “By God, I have never seen amore beautiful face, never heard a sweeter speech, nor smelled a better fragrancethan yours!” It says to him, “I am the eward of the prayer you offered on suchand such a night of such and such a month in such and such a year. BOOK 2. CHAPTER 1. THE OBSERVANCES OF R  AJAB & I TS V IRTUES

It should be known that some scholars have mentioned special prayers foreach of the nights of this month,1 which are not cited here for reasons of space.

OBSERVANCES FOR   THE FIRST D AY  OF R  AJAB

It is a noble day and there are several observances pertaining to it.(1) First, to fast on this day.2 It is mentioned in a tradition that the Prophet

Noah ( c a  ) boarded the Ark on this day and asked those who had accompaniedhim to fast that day. It also says that hellfire recedes a distance of a year’s journey from those who fast on this day.3

(2) Second, to take a bath.4

(3) Third, to perform the ziy¡rah of Imam °usayn ( c a  ). Shaykh ±£s¢ cites a

report transmitted by Bash¢r al-Dahh¡n from Imam Jacfar al-¯¡diq ( c a  ) that hesaid that to God Almighty pardons those who perform the ziy¡rah of °usaynibn c Al¢ ( c a  ) on the first day of Rajab.5

(4) Fourth, to recite the long supplication cited by Sayyid Ibn ±¡w£s in theIqb¡l .6

(5) Fifth, to commence the observance called the Prayer of Salm¡n, whichis to be performed as follows.7 Perform ten rakc ahs , giving sal¡m after every tworakc ahs . In each rakc ah recite al-°amd once, and S£rat al-Taw¦¢d and S£rat al-K¡fir£n three times each. After the sal¡m , raise your hands and say,

BOOK 2. CHAPTER 1. THE OBSERVANCES OF R  AJAB & I TS V IRTUES

pneumonia.Sayyid Ibn ±¡w£s has also cited a four rakc ah prayer for this day in the Iqb¡l

and those interested may refer to that book.1

According to one report,2 Imam Mu¦ammad al-B¡qir ( c a  ) was born on thisday in 57 H., though in my opinion 3rd of ¯afar is the more probable date.

 According to a report3 the auspicious birth of Imam c Al¢ al-Naq¢ ( c a  ) occurredon the 2nd day of this month in 212 H. in S¡marr¡. According to Ibn c Ayy¡sh,the birth of Imam Mu¦ammad al-Taq¢ ( c a  ) occurred on the 10th of this month.4

OBSERVANCES FOR   THE THIRTEENTH NIGHT

Know that it is musta¦ab to offer a two-rakc ah prayer on 13th night of the months

of Rajab, Shacb¡n and Rama¤¡n, with al-°amd recited once along with thes£rahs Y¡ S¢n, al-Mulk and al-Taw¦¢d in each rakc ah .

On the 14th night also, offer four rakc ahs with two sal¡m in the same manner, and six rakc ahs on the 15th night in the same manner with three sal¡m .

According to a report from Imam Jacfar al-¯¡diq ( c a  ), one who performsthis observance during these months partakes of the entire blessings of thesemonths and is forgiven all sins except that of  shirk. 5

OBSERVANCES FOR   THE THIRTEENTH D AY  OF R  AJAB

The 13th day is first of the so-called Ayy¡m al-B¢¤ (pl. or abya¤ , i.e. bright, shiny)and the traditions mention a great deal of reward for those who fast on thisand two following days.6 Those intending to perform the observance of  UmmD¡w£d (pp. ?) should keep their first fast on this day.

On this day, according to the commonly held opinion, occurred the auspi-cious birth of Am¢r al-Mu’min¢n c Al¢ ibn Ab¢ ±¡lib ( c a  ) inside the holy Kacbah inthe 30th Year of the Elephant.7

OBSRVANCES FOR   THE FIFTEENTH NIGHT OF R  AJAB

Try to bring tears into your eyes even if it is a semblance of moisture, for it is asign of the supplication’s being granted.

T WENTY -FIFTH D AY  OF R  AJAB

The martyrdom of Imam M£s¡ ibn Jacfar ( c a  ) occurred on this day in 183 H.,1 and it is a day of mourning for the Family of Mu¦ammad ( ¥  ) and their followers.

OBSERVANCES FOR   THE T WENTY -SEVENTH NIGHT OF R  AJAB

This is the night of the Mabcath (the first day of the Prophet’s ministry) and isone of the most blessed of nights. There are several observances relating to it.

(1) First is the observance mentioned by Shaykh ±£s¢ in the Mi¥b¡¦ .2 He says,“Imam Ab£ Jacfar al-Jaw¡d ( c a  ) is reported to have said, ‘There is a night in themonth of Rajab whose virtue exceeds everything on which the sun shines andthat is the 27th night of the month, on the morning of which the Apostle as-sumed his prophethood. There is a reward of 60 years of works ( c amal  ) for thoseof our followers who carry out its devotions.’ ”

When asked concerning its observances the Imam said, ‘After having gone

to bed after thec

ish¡ prayer, get up at any time you wish before midnight andperform twelve rakc ahs , reciting in every rakc ah al-°amd and one of the shorters£rahs called the mufa¥¥al  (which are the s£rahs from S£rat Mu¦ammad to theend of the Qur’¡n). Having performed this prayer, each two rakc ahs with a sal¡m ,recite while seated each of the s£rahs al-°amd, al-Falaq, al-N¡s, al-Taw¦¢d, al-K¡fir£n and al-Qadr 7 times, followed by ªyat al-Kurs¢ 7 times.  Then make any petition that you wish.’ It is musta¦ab to perform a bath on thisnight.

The twelve-rakc ah prayer mentioned under the observances pertaining to the15th night of Rajab (p. ) is also recommended for this night.1

(2) Second is performing the ziy¡rah of the Commander of the Faithful ( c a  ), which is the most meritorious act of this night.2 Three of his ziy¡rahs meant forthis night will be mentioned, God willing, in Book 3 on ziy¡r¡t (p.).

 Ab£c

Abd All¡h Mu¦ammad Ibn Ba§£§ah, a Sunn¢ scholar whose accountof travels is famous, describes the shrine of our master the Commander of theFaithful ( c a  ) in the account of his journey from Makkah Muca¨¨amah to Najaf  Ashraf.3

Noting that all the inhabitants of the city were rafi¤ites, he describes the mir-acles that occur at the shrine. He says, “On the twenty-seventh night of Rajab,

which is called laylat al-ma¦y¡ by the local residents, people from Iraq, WesternIran, Khorasan, Fars and Anatolia bring with them paralytics and chronically sick persons who are unable to move. About thirty or forty of them gather there.

After the c ish¡ prayer, the afflicted are brought near the sarcophagus and therethe people gather and wait for the sick to be healed and to stand up. Some of them engage in prayer, some recite dhikr and some read the Qur’¡n, while othersjust look on gazing at the shrine. This goes on until a half or two thirds of thenight have passed. Then all the afflicted who were unable to move rise to theirfeet, sound and cured of their ailment and chanting Lâ il¡ha illall¡h, Mu¦ammadur

OBSERVANCES FOR   THE T WENTHY -SEVENTH NIGHT OF R  AJAB

ments may be trusted. I myself saw three men in the madrasah which serves asthe shrine’s quarters for visitors. They were bedridden and unable to move. One

of them came from Anatolia, another was from Isfahan and a third from Kho-rasan. I asked them why they had not been cured and had remained there. They said that they had missed the night of the twenty seventh and were determined tostay on until the next year for recovery. Many people from various towns gatherthere for this night and a big bazaar is held which last for ten days.”

The compiler says: This description is not to be treated with scepticism, asthere are innumerable reports of the miracles that occur in these sacred shrines. In the previous month of Shaww¡l, in the year 1343 H., three women were mi-raculous cured in the shrine of Abu al-°asan c Al¢ ibn M£s¡ al-Ri¤¡, the EighthImam, our master and the intercessor for the sinners of the Ummah, may Allah’s

blessings be upon him. They suffered from paralysis and the like and the physi-cians were unable to heal them. This miracle that occurred at that sacred tombbecame evident for all, like the sun in the sky or like the open city gates of Najaf for the Arab Bedouins. So much was this matter manifest that it was said that thephysicians who were familiar with the cases of these women verified the factsand some of them even testified to their cure in writing. Were it not for consid-erations of space I would have mentioned the details of their story.

And well has our shaykh, al-°urr al-c ªmil¢ said in in his urj£zah,
