In reviewing the racing careers of allpremier horses there often is a definingmoment which took them out of thepack onto centre stage. For Somebeach-somewhere it was his Metro Pace win in 1:49.2 and the ease with which hehandled the competition.
In the case of All Speed Hanover itcould be argued that it took place onOctober 9 at The Red Mile in a$119,500 division of the InternationalStallion Stake staged over a sloppyracing surface on a positively miser-able day.
It was a performance that ledwatchful observers to sit up and takenotice. Against the much celebrated RaySchnittker trainee One More Laugh, All
Speed Hanover came first over beforethe half. He drew alongside One MoreLaugh at the three-quarter pole andthen marched by him where the famedtunnel under the track once was andcleared to win by two lengths in a timeof 1:50.3. It would be a harbinger ofthings to come.
“Going into the race I think many ofus, myself included, saw Ray Schnittker’shorse as the best two-year-old out thereand Ray drove him that way. It was adirty, filthy day but I do think the trackmay have been a little better off the railwhere we were. Still it was close to a 1:50mile and people realized that day whata good horse All Speed Hanover was,”recalls trainer Noel Daley.

All Speed Hanover may not win anyawards for his accomplishments this yearbut because of that effort and his BreedersCrown win over Sportswriter a few weekslater, many are going to go into the springthinking Daley’s horse is the one to beat. His talent and determination not to lose isa combination that cannot be ignored.
As Daley tells the story his role in theselection process of All Speed Hanoverwas limited.
“I am one of those trainers who havenever had any luck with Cams Card Sharks.I just never had a good one so I generallysteer clear of them. Listen, I know he’sbeen a good sire although he’s gotten alittle past being popular,” he explains.
“John Fielding asked me to look athim and offer an opinion. What I saw wasa colt with an athletic body, a nice lookerwithout the really ugly head that CamsCard Sharks are known for. It’s not prettybut better than most. Coming from methat was a lot because I went to the stallnot wanting to like him. I told John thatand he went ahead and got him.”
Fielding is a Toronto based businessexecutive who over the last 10 years hasbeen one of the most active owners in theracing game. While he dabbles a bit inThoroughbreds his passion is for harness
racing and the people in it.“The credit for finding this colt goes
to Bryan Montgomery and his wife Leah.Bryan kept telling me I would love thishorse when I went to the Hanover ShoeFarm consignment at Harrisburg, exceptfor the Roman nose, and he was right,”notes Fielding.
The final number was $60,000.“I would have kept going probably
up to $100,000. Look, he was the first coltthat the mare had ever thrown after fivefillies all of which made it. And then thereis the family; his dam Allamerican Cool is ahalf-sister to Eternal Camnation.
“I mean the page just jumps out ofthe catalogue to me. I remember thinkingthat if he hit big time he would bring agreat pedigree to the breeding shed.”
Fielding had become chummy withNew Yorkers Adam Victor Senior and Jun-ior. The two parties had shared ownershipof Took Hanover, a son of The Panderosawho won $650,000 but never quite lived upto his potential. As Daley described him hewas one of those horses who always
seemed to be a “day late and a dollarshort” when the big money was on the line.
All Speed Hanover presented anotheropportunity.
Fielding was correct in his admirationfor the family as confirmed by HanoverShoe Farm’s decision to not only ownAllamerican Cool, the dam of All SpeedHanover, but also to acquire three of herdaughters, Allamerican Coed, AllamericanCognac and Attitude Hanover.
The Pennsylvania nursery boughtAllamerican Cool p,3,1:54.4 ($58,066) outof the All American Harnessbreds dispersalat the 2005 Harrisburg mixed sale. Selling infoal to Dragon Again she brought $95,000.
She has since more than paid for herkeep selling that Dragon Again filly (Atti-tude Hanover) for $135,000. All SpeedHanover brought $60,000 and last monthher Rocknroll Hanover daughter brought$70,000 from Lindy Racing Stable of Con-necticut.
Allamerican Cool has a Dragon Againweanling colt and is now in foal to Some-beachsomewhere.

Meanwhile, All Speed Hanover waslearning his lessons in New Jersey at Mag-ical Aces rather than with the bulk ofDaley’s juvenile group at Spring GardenRanch in Florida.
“There was no particular reason whyhe did not go. I had a few homebreds I didnot take south and then there was him, itjust happened that way,” admits Daley.
“But the boys in New Jersey lovedhim although he did have a lot of gear onhis head. We ended up having to tie hishead down because he got to throwing itfor some reason. He was pretty erratic andhad to go like that for a fair while beforehe got the right idea.”
Last winter Team Daley had thelargest number of youngsters ever with 30in the barn.
“I said at one point how much I likedthis group but they were either a reallygood bunch or they all would let us downat the same time.”
Because he was a New Jersey-bredDaley was in no rush with All SpeedHanover. In the end he did not qualify thecolt until mid-August at The Red Mile
where he started and won two cheapearly closers.
“The boys always had a good opinionof him whereas I knew that Woodstockand Lord Terror, two that were in Florida, looked the part. When we got them alltogether I knew he was as good as theywere,” Daley recalls.
“At the same time I saw a terrificbunch of young horses out there on thetrack. I can’t recall as many quick onescapable of going in 1:51. And it provedout that they were a very good group.”
Daley debated about whether or notto send the colt back to the east coast forthe Governor’s Cup at Chester Downs.
“The day he first qualified he tossed ina last quarter of :25.4 so people there knewhe was quality. In the end we decided toship him back to Chester but the wholeidea had been to set him for Lexington.
“He raced all right but my driver (RonPierce) had a brain cramp and we finishedthird and did not make the final. The nextweek in the consolation he was flat andnot the same horse so we took him back toLexington after that.”
Two weeks later it was the BluegrassStake and a revitalized All Speed Hanoverwas back in form and cruised to a 1:50.3lifetime best. It was effortless and set himup for the meeting with One More Laugh.

That performance did not receive theattention it deserved but it did not escapethe attention of people who know horsesand it set the stage for what many believewas the race of the year.
The Breeders Crown events for twoand three-year-olds was back at Wood-bine Racetrack. It was October 24 and bythe time the ninth race went to post therewas a serious nip in the air. Woodbine inJuly it was not.
There was $720,860 on the line andfrom the start it was evident that this wasthe showdown between the unbeatenSportswriter from the Casie Colemancamp and All Speed Hanover who hadbeen sent to Michael Vanderkemp’s barnwhich is Daley’s customary practice whenracing horses in Canada.
The race set up with Sportswriter get-ting the rail with Mark MacDonald whileRon Pierce had post six with All SpeedHanover. It was clear from the start thatMacDonald wanted control of the raceand grabbed it early.
He rolled through fractions of :27.4and :55.4 with rank outsider OK Com-
mander first over followed by Malicious inthe second over position. All SpeedHanover was sixth but heading to thethree-quarter station Pierce pulled thetrigger and swept three wide, a positionhe had to maintain around the turn.
Into the stretch All Speed Hanoverdrew alongside and gained a neck advan-tage looking to pull away. However,Sportswriter rallied and producedarguably the best stretch drive of the year.
The two went at it hammer and tongseesawing down the lane with All SpeedHanover finally prevailing with a head tospare in 1:52. That was Sportswriter’s soleloss in eight starts.
“If that was not the race of the yearI don’t know what was. Woodbine is atough place to ship into because it is afront end track. I know MacDonald saidthat the other horse (OK Commander)was at him but we had to go three widearound the turn. I know I’m more than alittle partisan but we beat him fair andsquare as far as I’m concerned,” saysDaley.
“All Speed has shown twice that it isa long way to the bottom of the well andhe can carry his speed. I think he was putaway in good order after that racealthough we did leave some money on thetable.”

Daley was referring to the MatronStake at Dover Downs which never tookplace. Just three horses entered the race sothe monies were evenly split among thetrio with no race necessary. It would havemeant a good chunk of change just forcalling in the entry.
But there are no sour grapes in the AllSpeed Hanover camp which picked up$497,380 on the season, even thoughnone of them believe they have anychance for two-year-old colt pacer of theyear honours in the United States.
“Going into next year we have to belooked upon as the horse to beat afterthat Breeders Crown win but I expectSportswriter will get the award. He lostjust one race and he’s a quality horse but Iwouldn’t trade,” says Fielding who hasinvolvement in 65 head now.
That is exactly what Steve Calhoun,co-owner of Sportswriter said about hishorse at The Red Mile in a Harness Centralvodcast on the day All Speed Hanoverdowned One More Laugh.
“All Speed is taller than the averagehorse and has developed an awesome ath-
letic body. When he comes back in thespring I expect people will see him as quitea big horse but not bulky like Somebeach-somewhere. He has everything going forhim including his testicles,” quips Daley.
Daley is an Australian native andgrew up in a land were castration wasalmost automatic with stallions.
“I told Adam Victor some time agothat if he was ever really going to getahead in this game he had to hit with astallion. That’s when you can cash in.Pretty hard to tell a man that his horseshould be castrated after singing thatsong for a while.”
Australia is also a land where manytrainers believe in heart scores. Daley isnot one of them but did offer a little tidbitthat came to light.
“Andrew and Luke McCarthy werehere with me this year and just for fun putthe heart monitors on all the two-year-olds we had. All Speed Hanover was farsuperior. What that all means I don’t knowbut it’s interesting.”
It’s a brave man who jumps into a stal-lion deal on a two-year-old these days.
More often than not these horses struggleto maintain their superiority in a sopho-more season.
“I have a Thoroughbred friend whohas shown a bit of interest in giving Stan-dardbreds a go and he’s a big player inthat game. Who knows if anything willmaterialize but it is interesting to specu-late,” says Fielding.
All Speed Hanover will be one of 70horses under Daley’s care this winter. There are 28 yearlings to begin with butclearly All Speed is the stable star.
“I’m as enthused about racing thishorse next as I ever was Mr Muscleman. When he came along it was all a learn-ing experience. I’d never had anythinglike him before and the horse overcameus. Literally, we did not know what wewere doing but he did and just kept get-ting better as he got older,” admitsDaley.
“With a horse like All Speed youstake him to everything knowing thatyou won’t be in a lot of them. You cannotafford to be greedy and attempt to dothat. He’ll let us know the path to go.”
