Here come the boys… CHS rugby season gets underway

CHS has had a fantastic start to the rugby season. The expert coaching of Mr Matt Salter and Mr David Rees are

already paying dividends as the U11s romped home to victory and the U12&13s put up a fantastic fight against

Sidcot in the first week. The U8s and U9s showed excellent character against QEH the following week while the

U12&13s took an early lead, then saw QEH steal three quick tries and then grabbed an equalising try at the last

minute, much to the dismay of the QEH supporters! The U15 team gained invaluable experience, playing well

against a very strong team in Cardiff. We have some great teams developing at CHS and we look forward to

watching exciting matches as the season progresses with more fixtures coming up. Have a look on the website for

fuller match reports and a note of upcoming senior school training and match dates.

Bulletin

Friday 5th October was ‘Jeans for Genes’ day and we raised a superb £293.47 by paying to wear our jeans for the day! See more pictures of the denim/uniform styling that we saw on the day on the web.

Y1&2 enjoyed Autumnal Forest School last week; Y1’s very first time there. Read about what they did along with stories about visiting guests teaching Nursery about Spanish colours and Y1 about how their hearing works.

A team from Y12 have come 3rd in a tough Further Mathematics competition against around 150 others from Bristol schools. A terrific team effort secured Jim, Katie, Nikki, Tom and Zack’s fantastic result.

Sports reports for the junior girls’ teams are now on the web. We had some convincing wins in both netball and

hockey and some tough well-played games too. Well done to all the players! If you or your parents take photographs at any matches, please do send them in for the news pages.

Twenty Y10 pupils went on a practice walk in the Mendips for their Expedition section towards their Duke of

Edinburgh Awards. See more pictures of them learning map and compass reading and the rest of Nadia’s report on the website.

Aleah and Theo from 5B are off in Glasgow at time of writing, filming for the CBBC series, Incredible Edibles! They have written

us a pre-trip report on getting through the auditions which we will post with their full report and we can’t wait to hear how it all went when they get back. Look out for an update next

Important notes for all

Please note that there is no family and friends swim on Sat 27th Oct.

A reminder that the CHS dining room is a nut-free environment and all birthday cakes and other foods brought into school should be nut-free to avoid allergy related issues.

Each year the nation expresses unequivocal support for The Royal British Legion's work through the Poppy Appeal. Poppies are now available to buy in the School Office and the Beech Café.

Late Room and Tea Club update (Early Years)

For Nursery-Y2, Late Room and Tea Club, which both start at 3.35pm, are now housed together on the top floor of the Prep building so that children can mix together and use both rooms and all of the resources within them.

Late Room finishes at 4.10pm and Tea Club continues until 6pm. Children who have not been collected by 4.10pm are deemed to be in Tea Club after this time. Please note that there is a charge for Tea Club which varies depending on when a child is collected.

Chance! tickets on sale

Tickets are now on sale for the exciting and original school musical production to be gracing our stage in a few weeks time.

Come and support over 80 Clifton High pupils from Years 6-13 as they act, sing, dance and play in this fantastic show set in the 60s, written by our very own Mrs Malpass and Mrs Pritchard with bespoke music written by the marvellously musical Mike Smith (some parents may have even more fun comparing this with Mr Smith’s previous work with Gorillaz and Blur!) Don’t miss out!

CHS Factor Day for Year 2

Friday 26th October is ‘CHS Factor Day’ for Y2 when they spend a morning in the Junior School as the first of several ‘link activities’ that will occur throughout the year to help the children experience a seamless transition from Early Years to Juniors next September.

On CHS Factor Day, children will work with Y3 teachers for a fun lesson in the science labs, a creative workshop in the junior art room and an exciting choir session in the music room.

There will be an opportunity for the children to link with their Y5 ‘buddies’ at playtime and each child will get a ‘Junior School Quiz’ to challenge them at home (with a prize at stake!).

Parents’ Association notes

A reminder that Northbrooke charity wrapping paper orders are due into the School Office before half term.

The minutes of the last PA Class Reps’ meeting are now on the web.

Please note that the PA AGM date has moved (from the 21st) to the 28th November.

Year 12 and 13 students have been out and about on Biology field trips. AS students operated electron

microscopes at UWE and A level students collected and crunched data for their field work at Folly Farm. See the web report for more pictures and details of their trips.

There is plenty of Early Years and Junior news to read too - Reception have been busy making fruit

salad, Oliver, Lucy, Lewis and Katie in Y1 performed in assembly for National Poetry Day and Felix, Esme, Alfie, Flo and Maddie have raised enough funds to adopt five animals!

Read more on the web about our swimming news - Isabelle Thorpe has a growing stash of medals after the South of

England Synchronised Swimming Championships and Years 4-8 all did incredibly well in two Galas against Clifton College, winning both Galas overall. Go CHS swimmers!

Bike Donation Day

Remember to bring us unwanted bikes on Monday 22nd October and give it a new lease of life by donating it to Life Cycle UK’s recycling project.

Drop your bike(s) off by the MUGA where they will be collected by the charity Life Cycle UK, who take old bikes and teach prisoners at HMP Bristol how to fix them up, getting them back on the road for low prices. The project saves old bikes from landfill, teaches prisoners new skills and helps people on low incomes start cycling.

Winter chills (Reception to Y6)

You may remember how the official ikon school coat was not warm enough for some children on the severest of winter days last year. To ensure everyone stayed warm, other coats were permitted if they met certain criteria. We are currently discussing coats with a new supplier for 2013-14, but until then the policy remains as for last year:

Winter coats must:

Be black (Y3-6) or navy (Rec-Y2);

Be plain with no writing or logos;

Ideally have a reflective strip, although we recognise these can be more difficult to source.

Please ensure that your child’s coat conforms to these criteria. We will update you when we have news of a new uniform coat; any new uniform garment is ‘phased in’ over a reasonable period of time to avoid unnecessary expense.

Vouchers for sport

A big thank you to everyone for collecting Sainsbury and Tesco vouchers which bought: 4 hurdles, 16 rugby balls,10 hockey balls, 16 netballs, 20 rounders balls, match bibs and ball sacks plus a bag of Early Years equipment. THANK YOU!

Clifton High at the RWA

Paul Ayers, Head of Art and Design, has had a piece of his own artwork selected for the Autumn Exhibition at the Royal West of England Academy. His original screenprint, “Bristol Post – Gert Lush!” is one of a series based upon Soviet stamp designs from the 1960s, creating an imaginary independent ‘Republic of Bristol’. The piece on display is one of a very limited edition of twenty for sale that are all hand-printed in five different layers! The exhibition, from 21st October, includes artwork by hundreds of artists from across the country, including Royal Academicians - well worth a visit.
