AIMS Defining shared practices inside schools about the reception of students coming from a foreign country;

Facilitating the entry of children and young people of other nationalities into the school and the social systems;

Promoting a favourable welcome climate paying attention to human relations in order to prevent and remove any barriers to a full integration;

To promote communication and collaboration between school and territory about the themes of welcome and intercultural education, in the perspective of an integrated learning/training system.

In the Municipality of Parma the insertion of migrant students in our school take place according to their family’s residence address.

REGISTRATION

The reception office:

•It collects the following data and documents:

• Identification• Sanitary conditions• Previous school education

•Informs the family’s student about the chance to choose or not the Catholic religion

•Prepares an informative kit on the previous school education

•Communicates the new pupil’s family the meeting date with the entrusted teacher

The Interculturae Committee and theeventual linguistic mediator:

Meet the pupil and family

They collect the following information on the pupil: Interests Skills Competences

(In this phase the use of particular non verbal techniques such as drawing, sketch, the manipulative and gestural expressiveness activities and logical-mathematical ones, can facilitate the knowledge of the pupil)

They give the pupil a language level test to know his/her ability in the Italian language in case the student had been living in Italy for a time considered enough to learn some linguistic knowledge.

A TALK WITH THE FAMILY

The Headmaster and the interculturae committee:

1. According to the no. 45 art. of DPR 31/8/99 n.394

Art. 45 of DPR 31/8/99 n.394: the foreign minors subject to the scholastic obligation are to be addressed to the class correspondent to the identification age, unless the teaching staff deliberates the registration to a different class, considering:

• the student’s country educational system that could determine the registration to a class lower or immediately upper then the one correspondent to the identification age;

• the course of studies eventually followed; 

•the assessment of competences, skills and level of preparation

ALLOCATION TO THE CLASS

2. Considering the following items :

• classes with a number of students lower than the maximum one foreseen by the law;

• complexity of the classes;• pupils coming from the same Country

They identify the class suitable for the pupil  An informative Kit on the pupil’s previous education is given to the class teachers besides all the useful information for the teaching method planning.

ALLOCATION TO THE CLASS

The pupil’s family will be informed if it is necessary to buy books. If the pupil does not have any linguistics competence, other books which make the Italian language learning easier will be proposed.

The pupil’s insertion in the class

The pupil takes part to the life of the class alternating with his/her attendance of L2 laboratories according to the following needs: A first stage of language learning (A1) A consolidation of the acquired knowledge A gradual approach to the language used to study.

If it is possible a tutor (that is a class mate who is able to speak the same language of the new student) is singled out with an intermediary and guide role

Possible presence of a linguistic mediator in class. Use of facilitating linguistics methods through the use of images

and text simplification.

During the pupil’s insertion, the school collaborates with:

Other schools of the city for a comparison and a cooperation

Parma municipality: project “Schools and cultures of the world”

Thanks to the above project the students and their families can use the following services:

Labs of Italian as a second language in other city institutes in the afternoon in order to facilitate and to quicken the Italian language learning;Participation of the linguistic mediator in order to facilitate the communication with pupils and families and to make easier the integration of the pupil in the new class;“Sportelloscuola”, which the families can address to for any particular needs.
