TSM Server: Replication – Performance Enhancements
• Description
• Records changes via change identifier, granularity: list of files in a file space
• Initial replication: reconcile then Change Tracking process
• Restartable: remembers where it left off
• Benefit
• Eliminates need to query target server for its list of files
• Replication only processes files with a change identifier
• Improves performance for FS with lots of files
• Server Support
• Default: enabled
• Manual: REPLICATE NODE FORCERECONCILE=NO|YES
• Replication rules by: Server, Node, Filespace, Domainv7.1.1 Improvement: 2-3x
~200 GB/hr→ ~500 GB/hr
Replication ≤ v7.1
• Always done a reconcile
• Compared / synchronized complete list of files between the source and target server
© 2014 IBM Corporation18
TSM Server: Replication – Dissimilar Policies
• Description
• Decouple target from source server policy, target should use own policy
• Benefit
• Maintain more or fewer versions of replicated backup files on target
• Retain replicated archive files for more or less time on the target
• Target server storage can be reduced
• Server Support
• On source first: VALIDATE REPLPOLICY <server>
• Then: SET DISSIMILARPOLICIES <server> on
• Once enabled, target is notified during the next replication
• Expiration runs independently on each server
Use Case: Branch Office with limited storage

• Useful for increased TSM deduplication DB size / space requirements
• Benefit
• Reduction of space requirements for DB2 backups
• Server Support
• Parameter: COMPRESS on BACKUP DB and SET DBRECOVERY commands
• SET DBRECOVERY sets the compress defaults for the BACKUP DB
command
• Impact of Configuration Decisions
• Processor usage and duration increased
• Increases vary based on DB size, and HW configuration
