Dear Princetonian,

It has been at least a half century since the Black Sea region has held the attention of the world as it does today. Join your fellow Princetonians for a seven-night cruise in this important area, in the comfort of the fi ve-star M.V. TERE MOANA. The itinerary as planned today showcases stunning classic ruins and some of the Black Sea’s most intriguing destinations—Istanbul, Safranbolu, Amasya, Odessa, and Nessebar.

Experience the ebb and fl ow of European history at the confl uence of ancient trade routes, from the magnifi cent landmarks of Istanbul, the ruins of the sixth-century B.C. Greek-founded town of Nessebar (in current-day Bulgaria), and the architectural infl uence of Safranbolu—all UNESCO World Heritage sites. And, depending on the political situation at the time of the cruise, visit Odessa, “the Pearl of the Black Sea.”

Princeton travelers will be joined by those from Columbia University, the University of Texas, and Duke University. With only 44 cabins on the M.V. TERE MOANA, space on this program is limited. Please contact the Princeton Journeys team today at (609) 258-8686 or [email protected] to reserve your space.

With kind regards,

Istanbul, TurkeyLike the Bosphorus Strait, which is the conduit between the Black and Mediterranean Seas, legendary Istanbul has been a crossroads for trade and cultural exchange over centuries and is the continental bridge between the East and the West. Today, historic Istanbul is a UNESCO World Heritage site retaining the mystique of its shared infl uences as the former capital of three empires—the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. Visit its most fabled landmarks, including the spectacular sixth-century Byzantine Hagia Sophia, the majestic Blue Mosque, the incredibly well-preserved A.D. 200 Hippodrome of Constantine and the colorful Spice Bazaar, once the largest trading venue in the medieval world.

SafranboluWhat began as a caravan stop along Turkey’s main East-West trade route grew into a prominent Ottoman city, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a highlight of this cruise. Explore Safranbolu’s Old Bazaar and see the stone and timber konaks (mansions) built by wealthy Ottoman merchants.

Seated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia and a former channel of trade and cultural exchange, the Black Sea has been witness to migrations of Indo-European tribes and has had settlements on its shores for over 3000 years. The Phoenicians navigated the great salt waters of this inland sea during the Bronze Age, followed later by the Greeks, whose colonies stand today as thriving towns and cities. Successive empires from the West and East—Greek, Roman, Persian, Byzantine, Genoese, Venetian and Ottoman—imprinted their distinctive cultures on the region. Their legacies and traditions are seen in the varied architectural styles that uniquely defi ne each port and are experienced in the authentic cuisine and customary hospitality of the people. Travel this vital link between Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean Sea, and discover its seldom-seen jewels and hidden treasures.

Explore the extensive Amasya Archaeological Museum and its impressive collection of mummies dating from the 14th century. Indulge in the authentic tastes of the Black Sea region with a traditional Turkish lunch.

Odessa, UkraineFounded by Catherine the Great in 1789 to guard the southern approaches to her empire, Odessa, “The Pearl of the Black Sea,” is a graceful city of tree-lined avenues and Franco-Italian architecture. See the iconic Potemkin Stairs, extending from the harbor to the city center and immortalized in Sergei Eisenstein’s cinema classic, The Battleship Potemkin. Stroll down tree-lined Deribasovskaya Street, the city’s lively commercial heart; relax in a café in the glass-vaulted Passazh Corridor; and visit the ornate Odessa Opera House and Ballet, rebuilt in 1887 by the same Austrian architects who designed the Vienna State Opera. In the heart of old Nessebar, visit the well-preserved church of St. Stefan, dating back to the 11th century and known for the 16th- to 18th-century murals throughout its interior, and the 17th-century stone Church of St. Spas, built according to Ottoman rules partially below ground level. Not far from the Byzantine town gate, see the remnants of St. Sofi a Church, built in the late fi fth and early sixth centuries. Centuries of cultural traditions and beliefs are on display in Nessebar’s well-preserved churches.
