• Workstation provides the user interface

to connect to the server.

Linux

• Evolved from the commercial Unix OS

– An open source operating system

– Free to install

• Very reliable

• A common core; the “kernel”

• Packaged with other software; the

“distribution”

Macintosh

• Older Macintoshes

– Beige, OS 9 and down

– We don’t consider them

• Newer Macintoshes run OS X

– Properly called “OS Ten”

– “The Macintosh GUI on a Darwin core.

– Similar platform to Linux/Unix

Communications

• Protocol

– An agreed upon convention

• Network protocols

– Different applications use different

protocols

– Different protocols use different sockets or 

protocol numbers

The Network

• A modern tcp\ip network

– TCP: Transmission Control Protocol

– IP: Internet Protocol

– Basis of modern networking

• We do not consider Appletalk, Windows

Netbeui, or Novell proprietary

networking

Network Terminology

• Every computer has an IP version 4

address

– Called IPV4

– Four numbers separated by periods

– 192.168.1.100

• We are not using IPV6 yet

• URL

– Universal Resource Locator 

– Most people are familiar with web url’s

• http://cset.stcc.edu

– http is the protocol

– cset.stcc.edu is the url

– It is often case sensitive

Security

• Network traffic can be secure or 

insecure

• Insecure

– Anyone can monitor the traffic

• Secure

– The traffic is encrypted

• http

• telnet

• ftp

• X Windows

What Do You Need ?

• A Linux account on the cset2 server 

• A (web) forum account on the cset

server 

• A client workstation which is just a

computer on the internet with an

application that makes a secure

connection to the server
