We teach almost every instrument including:

About instrumental lessonsNewham Music Trust provides instrumental lessons in primary and secondary schools and at our famous ‘Academy of Music on weekday evenings and Saturday mornings.

Age is not a barrier to learning, although some instruments are not suitable for under 8s owing to the physical challenges of the instrument.

Lessons are taught by qualified expert tutors in one-to-one 20 or 30minute classes or in small group lessons which last 30 minutes.

Please contact us, or ask your school for further information on all instrumental lessons. If we don’t teach it then we can signpost you to one of our hub partners that does.

You can register your child by calling us on 0207 5406923. Lesson fees can now be paid online via www.newham-music.org.uk

If your child is under 6 you can enroll them in our Early Years classes: First Steps. See page 10.

Piano and Keyboards

KeyboardsKeyboard is the ideal way to learn familiar tunes quickly. It’s great for exploring harmony, improvising and composing, whether you use these skills in school or as part of a band with your friends. You can make the sound you want: a flute, a tuba or even heavy rock guitar. It also gives you key skills for GCSE and for learning the piano and if you are serious about music technology, keyboard skills are a must. Just like piano, you can even take exams as you progress. We recently had 5 keyboard players performing with the musicians from the amazing Academy of St Martin in the Fields as part of our Summer School. Having your own keyboard and headphones means you can make a lot of noise without upsetting your neighbours!

PianoPiano can be fun as you can start to pick out tunes quite quickly, but it’s also a great instrument for those who are serious about music, whether it’s classical, jazz or for writing and performing your own material. Classical music for piano is written all over the world. Jazz piano players like Jools Holland and Zoe Rahman lead their own bands, and songwriters like Alicia Keys accompany themselves. It’s a very useful skill for GCSE, A Level and beyond. You might even find yourself accompanying your friends in concerts!

We offer a comprehensive and wholly enjoyable range of courses for guitarists of all styles and levels of ability. Choose to learn one of the following styles of guitar and benefit from group and individual lessons from expert academy tutors.

• ‘Classical Spanish’ Guitar Traditional classical guitar is rooted in the heart of Spain and uses a guitar with nylon strings. The repertoire covers early and contemporary classical music and adopts rhythms and techniques found in flamenco and other forms of world music.

• ‘Acoustic Unplugged’ Guitar This fun class focuses on the guitar as an accompaniment to the voice and covers early stage picking and strumming. This is for players who want to explore folk and pop, acoustic based music.

• ‘Loud and Electric’ Guitar Plug in, turn up, play loud and direct with a set list spanning rock soloing to funk strumming. If you want to learn the classic overdrive riffs of AC/DC and the clean funk of Nile Rogers, this class is for you.

ROCK AND POP TAKEOVER

Calling all rock and pop musicians! Friday night is rock and pop takeover for guitarists, singers, drummers and keyboardists.

Guitar, drums and keyboard lessons take the form of hour long sessions in small groups with 30 minute shared lessons for singers. As students progress they come together to form the Dub Orchestra. Newham Dub Orchestra is the UK’s first youth Dub Orchestra. This innovative ensemble is brought to Newham through our partnership with the renowned Jazz Warriors International. The Dub Orchestra will give a platform to young musicians to work alongside leading professionals from the jazz and contemporary pop music world to explore and create music in a variety of styles. The dub orchestra welcomes young musicians who enjoy any style of music from rock and funk to jazz and soul.

If you are interested in rock and pop vocals, also see our project with Urban Development on pg18.

HAVE YOU GOT A ROCK OR POP BAND AND JUST WANT TO JAM OR REHEARSE WITH A BIT OF GUIDANCE?

Friday night is jam night. Turn-up, plug-in and play. Book it now and benefit from our regular showcase opportunities and performance coaching.

Wind and Brass

Wind and brass instruments come in all shapes and sizes and create a brilliant array of sounds. From the delicate tones of the flute to the loud fanfare of the trumpet, there is a wind or brass instrument to suit everyone! Wind and brass instruments complement each other perfectly in wind bands and orchestras, and brass and saxophones are essential to any blues, jazz or ska band. Ask us for advice if you’re struggling to choose one.

RecorderFor some people the recorder is the first instrument they learn, but it is far more than just a beginner instrument. Some of our pupils carry on to take Grade 8 exams and you can even go on to music college or university to study recorder. You might start on descant recorder and then try out something a bit bigger such as bass recorder.

StringsWhether it’s Bollywood, Classical, Romany or Jazz, string players enjoy performing in a variety of styles. Cello and double bass players are always in demand for school and borough ensembles.

INSTRUMENTS ARE AVAILABLE TO HIRE SO JUST ASK.

Try an endangered instrument for free. Endangered instruments are instruments that not many people play, such as viola, double bass and oboe. If you can play an endangered instrument, you will always be in demand from orchestras and bands.

First Steps First Steps lessons are for Early Years children aged 3-5 and are the perfect, fun introduction to learning music. The children learn about different instruments, singing and listening. Most First Steps students move onto one of our recorder groups for ages 5 and 6, or onto instrument tuition.

We invite everyone who plays an instrument to be part of one or more of our Newham Youth Ensembles. We welcome pupils who learn an instrument with us, through ECaM or from another tutor. Pupils can join as soon as they can play 5 notes. Most ensembles happen as part of our Saturday morning music academy. Players usually start in the junior ensembles such as String Club and Blast Off before progressing through our intermediate ensembles into our highest level groups such as Newham Youth Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Band and Senior Guitar Ensemble.

Ensembles, Bands and Newham Youth Orchestra

Newham CollectiveNewham Music Hub has combined with the Barbican Guildhall Creative Learning team and NewVIc Sixth Form College music department to launch an innovative new creative ensemble for committed young musicians. Musicians meet on a weekly basis to collectively create original new music and will have the opportunity to join the Barbican’s ‘Impossibilities’ collective. This initiative will connect talented young musicians in Newham to Barbican Guildhall and provide a unique pathway experience.

Find out more about the range of ensembles by visiting our website. Our free termly Music Maker workshops are an ideal way to try out Saturday School. Pupils are also welcome to join Saturday School at any point in the year, although we prefer to know in advance so we can make you feel welcome.

Newham Gig Circuit

There are many benefits of a music scene – an environment in which young, DIY bands and groups can put on their own gigs, rehearse with decent equipment, and record their music. A music scene encourages and fosters creativity.

The Newham Music Hub has formed the Newham Gig Circuit; a partnership between musicians, venues and art spaces, creatives and educational organisations.

The Newham Gig Circuit provides:

• Regular performance opportunities at established music venues

• The opportunity to get involved with organising and promoting gigs

• Places to rehearse at very low rates with equipment provided

• Tutored rehearsals with advice from experienced gigging musicians

• The chance to meet other musicians and form bands

• Arranged recording days for musicians to learn about the process of recording.

• The chance to join our record label!

The Newham Gig Circuit is run in partnership with venues and art spaces throughout Newham including Arch1 music venue and rehearsal space, Red Door Studios and Cody Dock.

We are always looking for new partners who support us in our vision of making Newham the place to go for new music.

Projects and Performances

Urban Development @ NAM

Singers, instrumentalists and producers aged 14-17 with a keen interest in urban music can apply to take part in our UProgress Record Label project with Urban Development.

Participants will explore the latest techniques and styles, both in professional studio and home studio environments. Students will draw inspiration from a range of sources including existing music making practice, alongside researching musical style and identity of artists.

On completion of the project all students will have completed a portfolio of ideas including demo recordings and marketing visualizations, and will have a clear idea of how to progress these skills further within education.

Sessions run throughout the Autumn and Spring 2013/14 terms.

We currently provide instrumental and vocal tuition to Newham Schools as part of our ‘Schools’ Enhancement Programme’.

Schools can benefit from:

If making big beats like Labrinth, Katy B and Dr Dre is your thing and you’re aged 14 to 19 and into music, come and spend some time on our Digital Music Production and Radio Course.

At AudioLab studios or Newham secondary schools, students can learn to record and create backing tracks with the help of our professional music producer. Workshops include live recording; radio production and presenting; DJ-ing and MC-ing; and using software such as Logic and Reason.

You can also try your hand at radio production. Our Newham Vibe Community Youth Radio is a working station offering training in radio broadcasting, production, radio DJ-ing and presenting.

The next step is teaching you the skills and techniques needed to get you and your music noticed and out there to build up your followers through a social media campaign. You can even gain qualifications whilst doing this – working towards an NCFE Diploma in Music Technology and completing Arts Awards will count towards UCAS points. Students work on their own audio workstation and class sizes are strictly limited to ensure 1-to-1 instruction and guidance. Tracks are available to take away on CD or USB.

AudioLab Music Technology and Radio Production

AudioLab operates at the following venues:

• Beckton Globe Community Centre• Little Ilford Community Centre• Newham Academy of Music at New VIc

6th Form College.

Our team of studio experts have worked with artists including Tinie Tempah, Jordan King, Inner City Dwellers, Ballistiq, Roll Deep, Ragga Twins, and RedNeck. They have helped many AudioLab participants to get work in the music industry as artists, with organizations, recording studios, radio stations, producers and promoters. Whatever style of music you are into, AudioLab has the knowhow to help get your future music career on track. Most of the projects are FREE or require a small entry fee, so what are you waiting for?! Contact us for more information on any AudioLab projects.

Most of our special projects are funded through charitable fundraising, so are free to participants who are eligible.

Feeling Music: helps children and young people who are deaf or hearing impaired to learn and make music, with the aim of integrating them into mainstream orchestras and ensembles.
