From the Desk of Deacon Anthony February 18, 2018The First Sunday of Lent

First Sunday of Lent

Next Week: Second Sunday of Lent1st Reading: Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18

2nd Reading: Romans 8:31b-34Gospel: Mark 9:2-10

First Reading: Genesis 9:8-15This passage covers the time after the Great Flood; God made a covenant with Noah and his sons and all the ani-mals on the ark that never again will such a flood devas-tate the earth. He gave them the sign of the rainbow to assure them of His promise.

Gospel: Mark 1:12-15This reading refers to the trials and temptations that Je-sus withstood in the desert for forty days. Jesus knew He would be tried. As we begin this Lenten season, we too are aware that we are tried and tested. Although we may continue to fail and be tried, we have Jesus as our model. John the Baptist’s ministry was ending as Jesus’s minis-try gained in recognition.

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:18-22Christ the righteous, saved the unrighteous. As No-ah’s family and the accompanying animals were saved through water and the accompanying trials of the flood, we are saved through the waters of Baptism and the re-demption through Christ.

I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. (Genesis 9:13) Who hasn’t been fascinated by a rainbow? How many of you recall that after a dreary, rainy day, you looked up into the open sky and saw a beautiful rainbow appear? Didn’t it put a smile on your face? Lent is also a time for us to look up, step back, and examine our lives for the coming of the greatest sign of all: the Easter Resurrection. As we experience the calls of Lent, we might reflect on Noah’s experience in today’s first reading. Noah gave up his in-dependence, and both literally and spiritually floated, absolutely and totally dependent on God’s care. The Rainbow is the sign given to Noah, of God’s promise; He knows our weaknesses, but will never abandon us.As we begin our Lenten journey we are asked to challenge ourselves. Perhaps, our real temptations are being too comfortable and not being anxious to move from where we are; and settling for what is, rather than working for what could be.Lent is also a season of joy, because we, as a Church, are preparing to receive those Catechumens and Candidates who will enter full-communion with us at the Easter Vigil, along with thousands of others who will be called by Cardinal Dolan to the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist). Lent is a time when we reflect on own baptismal promises, that will be renewed at Easter. With the Catechumens and Candidates, we prepare to “re-enter” the Catholic Church, perhaps, more deeply. St. Mark tells us that “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” (Mark 1:15) The ways of Jesus are being offered up to us each moment of every day. Springtime leads to new life; Lent leads to Easter. Lent actually comes from the German word for spring. Therefore, Lent leads to new Life.As the Jews had to rely on God’s care for forty years, and Jesus relied on Abba, for forty days, we too, should rely on God, to lead us out of our deserts, so that we might be led back into the Kingdom. As we journey toward our home-land, using our Baptismal passport, which gives us citizenship as “Children of God,” we should not neglect our re-sponsibilities here today. Heaven is not just a question of the hereafter. It begins right here and right now; and what better time of the year than Lent to pause, reflect and listen to Him? Try Fasting from judging others and Feasting on the Christ within us; Fasting from anger, worry, and bitterness, and Feasting on patience, trust, and forgiveness; Fasting from selfishness, worldly pressures, despair and Feasting on compassion, prayer, hope; Fasting from indif-ference and Feasting on enthusiasm. Can you add any?We all are on a pilgrimage that began with Abraham to a place unseen, a land of promise. We journey in faith, in trust, in hope, in love; and we only have to look up for that rainbow to know that God is with us. Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s com-mand to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and

social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

129. What is so bad about using God’s name in vain?In Jesus’ day, even speaking God’s name could be pun-ished by death. Today, we can hardly sit through a movie or television show without hearing it used as a swear word. Using God’s name in a disrespectful manner doesn’t make it less holy, but it does make it less holy in the eyes of the world.

We, who are Christians and followers of Jesus, have prom-ised to uphold God’s laws. If we allow those around us to use God’s name in vain, or worse, do it ourselves, we tell the world that we don’t think God’s laws are important. For example, God said, “You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.” (Exodus 20:7) and Jesus told us to say, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.” (Matthew 6:9) Yet, if we disobey and use the precious name in vain or sit idly by while others do, we demon-strate our disdain for the honor of his name and his in-structions. Neither is wise nor desirable.

Studied and Prayed Fr. James Villa, OFM

Siena Friary, Mt. Vernon, NYScripture teacher

The living Word of God comes to us “wrapped” in the lan-guage, culture and history of those who handed over their experiences to us. Through study and prayer, the Holy Spirit helps us to “unwrap” the living Word of God so that we can understand and follow it in our own time, in our own lives.

Tuesday, March 6The Living Word of God:

Lived in the Divine Office and the Holy FaceDom Bernard Schinn, OSB

Holy Face Monastery, Paterson, NJ - PriorThe Rule of St. Benedict continually reminds us that our life is a God-centered life; that the whole of our monastic life ought to be directed towards seeking His Holy Face. For this purpose, several times each day we gather together for the Divine Office (Opus Dei).
