!INDUSTRIAL MULTI DIRECTIONAL WIND TURBINE DESIGN

ABSTRACT

Current wind turbine design technology comprises of harnessing wind energy from a single direction. Utilizing wind energy from multiple directions for increased efficiency is of great interest primarily for industrial exhaust fan systems and the surrounding air at increased altitudes. The wind turbine presented has been designed with an innovation to synthesizing both horizontal axis wind turbine dynamics and vertical axis wind turbine dynamics to improve and increase overall rotational efficiency around an axis.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to the modern wind turbine design, which has primarily consisted of various arrangements designed to extract wind energy from the freestream air. The extraction techniques consist of implementing airfoil blades to rotate around a central shaft and through a series of gearing ratios provide rotation to an electrical generator. Additionally at present there exists two primary types of wind turbine design. The first type is designated as the horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) which utilizes power generation by rotating a series of blades perpendicular to the ground, where as the primary drive shaft is oriented parallel to the ground. The second type is designated as the vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT), which utilizes power generation by rotating a series of blades substantially parallel to the ground whereas the primary drive shaft is, oriented perpendicular to the ground. Substantially is defined as angles less than ten degrees due to some VAWT configurations containing a helical upward loft, however the shaft orientation remains perpendicular with the ground. Both HAWT and VAWT designs have their advantages and disadvantages. HAWT type designs are able to produce larger electrical power generation due to their increase size advantage both with respect to height and rotor diameter. Their primary disadvantage is ironically due to their increased size requirement. The increase in diameter rotor size limits tip speeds which if not monitored can produce structural beam deformation in the blades. Furthermore the larger HAWT designs are subject to gravitational loading when in operation and their power generation device must rest atop the support structure which can further complicate dynamics. VAWT designs are advantageous in the sense that they are not directional, and can place their power generation source at the base, which provides enhanced stability. Furthermore they are not subject to gravitational loading and adverse tip speed effects. The primary disadvantage to the VAWT design is the efficiency in harnessing the wind energy. On average HAWT designs are noted to be 15% more efficient than VAWT designs. Note that both types of design are of lift type wherein lift type denotes that the torque is due to the associating decomposed lift vector.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The wind turbine presented utilizes both HAWT and VAWT dynamics as a combined effort to harness electrical power generation. Due to the multi directional harnessing capability, the design has been denoted as the Multi Directional Wind Turbine (MDWT). The MDWT contains a variety of commercial and industrial applications. The primary utilization of the MDWT is for industrial buildings with large rooftop packaged, chillers, and condenser units. These rooftop AC units are in an environment that is conducive to increased wind speeds due to elevated altitudes and additionally large volume flow rates from their air condenser fan exhaust. The overall height of the wind turbine unit not including the mounting support system is noted to be roughly half the distance of the HAWT fan blade diameter. This restriction in height is to prevent injury to both human and avian interaction.

Displays the multi directional wind turbine 9. The multi directional wind turbine 9 comprises of a HAWT airfoil blade assembly 12 mounted to the lower rotor hub 19. The HAWT airfoil blade assembly 12 may be comprised of multiple airfoil profiles that consist of a base incidence angled airfoil profile that is twisted through a series of planar lofts. Furthermore the designation of assembly is extended to the VAWT airfoil blade assembly 14 and the upper mounting strut assembly 16 as the lofting of planar airfoil segments to create a “blade”. The angle of incidence will be determined by the volume flow rate of the exhaust fan 11, as larger units will output a larger volume flow rate increasing the Reynolds number thus decreasing the incidence angle. Furthermore active control may be of implementation as to provide the optimal incidence angle as the performance conditions of the air condenser exhaust may vary during various months of the year. HAWT airfoil blade assembly 12 is connected to lower winglet adapter 13,

!which provides the transition from HAWT airfoil blade assembly 12 to VAWT airfoil blade assembly 14. The lower winglet adapter 13 is then connected to the VAWT airfoil blade assembly 14. In similarity to the HAWT airfoil blade assembly 12, the VAWT airfoil blade assembly 14 may additionally contain some incidence angle and additionally active control to optimize the performance of the blade section during various months of the year. The VAWT airfoil blade assembly 14 is attached to the upper winglet adapter 15, which provides the transition from the VAWT airfoil blade assembly 14 to the upper mounting strut assembly 16. Note that the upper mounting strut assembly 16 may be of airfoil type either symmetric or of some twist as to provide both stability and further energy extraction from the air conditioner exhaust fan 11. Additionally note that the upper mounting strut assembly 16 may also contain active control for optimal performance during various months of the year. The upper mounting strut assembly 16 are connected to the upper mounting rotor hub 23, which provides the connection point for all upper mounting struts 16 to the primary shaft 22. The primary shaft 22 is connected to lower rotor hub 19. The lower rotor hub 19 is connected to the base mounting platform 17 by a series of internal bearings a (Not shown) and a ring clamp 18. The design proposed suggests that the internal bearings allow the lower rotor hub 19 to rotate on the base-mounting platform 17 in restraint of the ring clamp 18. Therefore the dynamics from the HAWT airfoil blade assembly 12 and the VAWT blade assembly 14 are designed to rotate about axis X3 for power generation. Furthermore base-mounting platform 17 will contain the necessary components for power generation/conversion. Mounting arm assembly 20 is connected to base mounting platform 17. The mounting arm assembly 20 is designed to support the structure and additionally provide aerodynamic enhancement from the exhaust fan 11. It is noted that there are many types of aerodynamic enhancements. The particular embodiment described therein is of flow conditioning through minimizing drag and rotational effects in the flow. Another type of embodiment may comprise of nacelle type in which the flow is converged rather than conditioned.

While this invention has been described with reference to exemplary embodiments, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes may be made and equivalents may be substituted for elements thereof without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. In addition, modifications may be made to adapt a particular situation or material to the teachings of the invention, without departing from the essential scope thereof. Therefore, the invention is not limited to the particular embodiments disclosed herein, but includes all embodiments falling within the scope of the appended claims.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROEJCT

Soft good designs are always a challenge because from a CAD point of view it typically requires advance knowledge of composite surfaces and understanding how to manipulate the topology such that it can still be appropriated for manufacturing. Initially when this client approached us they contained various sketches and ideas alongside questions for how to manufacture the product. We knew from a marketing point of view that the design contained a maximum retail value of under $20.00 USD. Therefore once we collaborated and consulted with the client we were able to produce a economic and ergonomic design that utilized off the shelf buckles, minimalistic strap, and adjustable to any shoe size. Today the client is pursuing avenues of manufacturing and negotiating various licensing possibilities.

REFLECTING ON THE PROJECT

Q: How did you know where to begin? A: Since the target price point was established, whatever was to be developed must be manufacture friendly and a minimal in a tooling initiation. Therefore containing knowledge off a large buckle and strap corporation we were able to produce a direction oriented design.

Q: What about the design was the most difficult? A: Surface modeling is always a challenge and in order to do an excellent jobs an engineer needs to be able to see how curves can connect terminal points in the design. Emelody Product Development contains excellent engineers but most importantly imaginative engineers who can utilize the software in extraordinary methods.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROEJCT

When The Mechanical Design Studio of San Francisco approached the design guideline of interest must be able to capture both vertical air from the condenser fan and horizontal air from the surrounding free stream air. Thus a design of utility will incorporate features from both horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) design and vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) Design. Table I displays both concepts of wind turbine methodology. Furthermore one key design constraint was the unit designed is no greater than 12” or 1 foot tall to prevent unwarranted avian interaction. Emelody Product Development presented a unique design of both concepts that met the full design requirement and additionally supplied complete mounting locations of all components.

REFLECTING ON THE PROJECT

Q: How did you know where to begin? A: Any time that you are given design requirements, one must approach the design with these parameters in mind. Emelody Worldwide Inc. contains a research division and this group suggested that a lightweight novel synthesis of both concepts would be ideal. Furthermore keeping the center of mass in the lower portion of the device with the central power generation device provided incredible stability during gust conditions.

Q: What about the design was the most difficult? A: Blade design is extremely difficulty and time consuming because the cross section from the root must be rotated and potentially changed as to provide maximum lift yet minimize parasitic drag from the horizontal air flow direction. In order to locate the proper twist and root pitch of the blade, computational fluid dynamics is being utilized to optimize the design.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROEJCT

The Vindicatore UAV design represents the next generation in UAV flight technology to cater to the incoming world of vertical takeoff and landing technology. To date the project has received tremendous appreciation and recognition for being the first aircraft of the VTOL realm to remove itself from the Quad-Copter Family. Our internal research and design department will continue to focus on the design and is presently under development with its novel landing gear system analogues to an arthropod system.

REFLECTING ON THE PROJECT

Q: How did you know where to begin? A: Engine Development and Nacelle design is the most important when considering a new class of aviation vehicle alongside the external fuselage design. From the beginning we knew our center of mass was appropriated accordingly thus optimizing how the thrust was vectored is our initial primary concern.

Q: What about the design was the most difficult? A: To date it has been the engine ducting. Only one large major U.S. Defense company, Lockheed Martin, utilizes a similar ducting design which is highly proprietary to their JSF-35 design.

As can be seen from the plot of roll angle versus time, the aircraft performs a doublet in order to make a 30˚ banked turn lasting 20 seconds. The roll angle plot shows that each time a pulse is initiated to change the roll angle the aircraft slightly overshoots its intended angle but quickly reaches the desired angle with stability. This is further supported by the roll rate plot, which shows zero magnitude in between each pulse. The sideslip response shows magnificent control, reaching a maximum magnitude of less than 1 degree when a pulse was initiated. This clearly shows the ability to use ailerons to turn (through banking) instead of the rudder. Finally, the aileron and rudder responses show that each does not have to do much work to achieve this banked turn. Each experiences a jump in magnitude, which corresponds to a pulse input. An extra plot was also made (shown above) which shows the lateral acceleration in g’s experienced by the aircraft during the turn. As one can see, there is very little lateral acceleration; the maximum magnitude is 0.5 g’s, which is not even the force of gravity itself. The implementation of the SCAS was successful.

congressional$ subpoena$ or$ information$ request,$ provided$ that$ the$ Receiving$ Party$ first$ notify$ the$Disclosing$Party$of$ such$event$so$ that$ the$Disclosing$Party$may$seek$an$appropriate$protective$order$or$waive$compliance$by$the$Receiving$Party$with$the$terms$of$this$Agreement.$$

$Proprietary$Information$shall$not$be$deemed$to$be$within$the$above$exceptions$(i$through$iv)$merely$because$it$

is$(i)$embraced$by$more$general$public$information,$or$(ii)$a$combination$derivable$from$separate$sources$of$

public$information,$none$of$which$discloses$the$combination$itself.$$2. CONFIDENTIALITY.+++

(A) The$Receiving$Party$shall$protect$and$hold$the$Proprietary$Information$in$strict$confidence,$exercising$the$same$degree$of$care$it$exercises$to$protect$its$own$proprietary$information,$but$not$less$than$a$reasonable$degree$ of$ care.$ The$ Receiving$ Party$ shall$ immediately$ advise$ the$ Disclosing$ Party$ in$ writing$ of$ any$unauthorized$ disclosure,$ misappropriation$ or$ misuse$ by$ any$ individual$ or$ entity$ of$ the$ Proprietary$Information$of$which$the$Receiving$Party$is$aware.$+

+(B) Unless$otherwise$expressly$set$ forth$herein,$ the$Receiving$Party$shall$not,$without$the$Disclosing$Party’s$

prior$written$consent,$directly$or$indirectly:$(i)$use$or$copy$the$Proprietary$Information$for$its$own$benefit$or$ for$ the$benefit$ of$ any$other$ individual$ or$ entity,$ except$ in$ connection$with$ the$Purpose;$ (ii)$ disclose,$transfer$or$otherwise$make$available$the$Proprietary$Information$to$any$other$individual$or$entity,$except$affiliates,$directors,$officers,$employees,$consultants,$advisors,$and$agents$(collectively,$“Representatives”)$of$ the$Receiving$Party$who$need$ to$know$such$Proprietary$ Information$ for$ the$Purpose;$or$ (iii)$ reverse$engineer,$disassemble$or$decompile$any$prototypes,$hardware$devices,$software$or$other$tangible$objects$which$embody$the$Proprietary$Information.$+

(D) The$ Receiving$ Party’s$ obligations$ under$ this$ Section$ 2$ for$ each$ item$ of$ Proprietary$ Information$ shall$continue$for$a$period$of$18$(eighteen)$months$from$the$date$that$the$Disclosing$Party$first$discloses$such$item$(or$ in$case$of$ trade$secrets,$as$ long$as$such$proprietary$ information$remains$a$ trade$secret),$ to$ the$Receiving$Party$or$the$date$of$creation$by$or$on$behalf$of$the$Receiving$Party,$as$applicable.$+

3. REPRESENTATIVES+ WITH+ UNRESTRICTED+ ACCESS+ PRIVILEGES.$ Notwithstanding$ any+ other$ Proprietary$Information$ identification$ and$marking$ requirements$ set$ forth$ elsewhere$herein,$ if$ an$ employee$or$ agent$of$either$ party$ (an$ “Unrestricted$ Representative”)$ is$ granted$ unrestricted$ access$ privileges$ on$ the$ premises$and/or$computer$network$of$the$other$party,$the$following$identification$and$marking$requirements$will$apply$to$ the$ disclosure$ of$ Proprietary$ Information$ to$ any$ such$ Unrestricted$ Representative.$ Since$ disclosure$ of$Proprietary$Information$will$be$uncontrolled$and$may$occur$at$any$time$while$an$Unrestricted$Representative$is$ exercising$ unrestricted$ access$ privileges,$ it$ is$ understood$ that$ Proprietary$ Information$ of$ the$ Disclosing$Party$may$not$ be$marked$ or$ otherwise$ designated$ as$ proprietary$ or$ confidential,$ and$ it$ is$ the$ intent$ of$ the$parties$that$all$such$Proprietary$Information$be$covered$by$and$protected$under$this$Agreement.$The$Receiving$Party$hereby$accepts$the$responsibility$to$protect:$(i)$all$written$ information,$whether$ in$paper$or$electronic$form,$provided$by$the$Disclosing$Party$to$an$Unrestricted$Representative$of$the$Receiving$Party$that$is$marked$with$ an$ appropriate$ proprietary$ legend;$ and$ (ii)$ any$ unmarked$ scientific,$ mathematical$ or$ technical$information,$ designs,$ processes,$ procedures,$ formulae,$ confidential$ business$ or$ financial$ information,$computer$programs,$algorithms,$and$other$similar$information$that$a$Representative$observes$while$exercising$unrestricted$ access$ privileges,$ unless$ such$ information$ is$ covered$ by$ a$ specific$ exception$ set$ forth$ in$ this$Agreement$ or$ written$ clarification$ of$ its$ non=proprietary$ status$ has$ been$ obtained$ from$ an$ authorized$representative$ of$ the$ Disclosing$ Party.$ This$ paragraph$ of$ the$ Agreement$ does$ not,$ in$ and$ of$ itself,$ grant$ or$confer$unescorted$premises$access$or$unrestricted$computer$network$privileges$upon$either$party.$Rather,$ it$sets$ forth$ certain$ confidentiality$ obligations$ that$ are$ applicable$ to$ both$ unmarked$ and$marked$ Proprietary$Information$if$said$privileges$are$granted$to$either$party$by$other$means.$+

+4. RETURN+OF+PROPRIETARY+INFORMATION.$At$the$Disclosing$Party’s$written$request$for+any$reason,$

the$Receiving$Party$ shall$promptly$ return$ to$ the$Disclosing$Party,$or$ at$ the$Disclosing$Party’s$option,$ certify$destruction$ of,$ all$ Proprietary$ Information$ that$ is$ in$ its$ possession$ or$ control,$ in$ whatever$ form,$ including$without$limitation,$all$documents,$reports,$memoranda,$notes,$files$or$analyses$that$contain,$summarize$or$are$based$upon$any$Proprietary$Information$and$all$copies$thereof.$+

+5. RESERVATION+ OF+ RIGHTS;+ WARRANTY+ DISCLAIMER.$ The$ Receiving$ Party+ acknowledges$ that$ it$ is$

granted$only$a$ limited$non=exclusive$ right$ to$use$ the$Proprietary$ Information$only$ for$ the$Purpose$ set$ forth$herein.$The$Receiving$Party$ further$agrees$ that$ the$Disclosing$Party$ shall$ remain$ the$exclusive$owner$of$ the$Proprietary$ Information$ and$ all$ patent,$ copyright,$ trademark,$ trade$ secret,$ and$ other$ intellectual$ property$rights$ in$ such$ Proprietary$ Information.$ Nothing$ in$ this$ Agreement$ is$ intended$ to$ grant$ any$ rights$ to$ either$party$under$ any$patent,$ copyright,$ trademark,$ trade$ secret$ or$ other$ intellectual$ property$ rights$ of$ the$other$party,$nor$shall$this$Agreement$grant$the$Receiving$Party$any$rights$in$or$to$the$Proprietary$Information$except$as$ expressly$ set$ forth$ herein.$ The$ parties$ acknowledge$ and$ agree$ that$ none$ of$ the$ Proprietary$ Information$transmitted$ or$ exchanged$ hereunder$ shall$ constitute$ any$ representation,$ warranty,$ assurance,$ guaranty$ or$inducement$ with$ respect$ to$ the$ infringement$ of$ any$ patents,$ copyrights,$ trademarks,$ or$ other$ intellectual$property$ rights$ of$ third$ parties.$ ALL$ PROPRIETARY$ INFORMATION$ IS$ PROVIDED$ “AS$ IS”$ AND$ THE$DISCLOSING$ PARTY$ MAKES$ NO$ WARRANTIES,$ EXPRESS,$ IMPLIED$ OR$ OTHERWISE,$ INCLUDING$WITHOUT$ LIMITATION,$WARRANTIES$ AS$ TO$ THE$ ACCURACY,$ COMPLETENESS,$ PERFORMANCE,$MERCHANTABILITY,$OR$FITNESS$OF$ANY$PROPRIETARY$INFORMATION,$NOR$SHALL$DISCLOSING$PARTY$BE$LIABLE$FOR$ANY$CLAIM$AGAINST$RECEIVING$PARTY$BY$ANY$THIRD$PARTY.$+

+++6. REMEDY+FOR+BREACH.$The$parties$acknowledge$that$monetary$damages$alone$would$not$be$an+adequate$

remedy$for$any$breach$of$this$Agreement$by$the$Receiving$Party$or$its$Representatives$and$that$the$Disclosing$

Party$may,$in$addition$to$all$other$remedies$available$at$law$or$in$equity,$may$seek$injunctive$relief,$without$the$

necessity$ of$ posting$ bond$ or$ other$ security,$ to$ remedy$ or$ prevent$ any$ breach$ or$ threatened$ breach$ of$ this$

Agreement$by$the$Receiving$Party$or$any$of$its$Representatives.++

7. EXPORT+CONTROL.$It$is$understood$that$both$parties$are$subject$to$U.S.$laws$and$regulations+controlling$the$export$of$certain$ items,$commodities,$defense$articles,$confidential$ information,$proprietary$technical$data$or$source$ code$ (each,$ an$ “Item”).$ Each$ party$ is$ obligated$ to$ comply$ with$ applicable$ U.S.$ export$ laws$ and$regulations$(including$the$Arms$Export$Control$Act,$as$amended,$and$the$Export$Administration$Act$of$1979).$Prior$to$providing$any$Items$which$are$subject$to$U.S.$export$laws$and$regulations,$and$prior$to$furnishing$any$Items$where$ oral$ instruction$ or$ inspection$may$ disclose$ technical$ data$ subject$ to$ such$ export$ controls,$ the$Disclosing$ Party$ shall$ notify$ the$ Receiving$ Party’s$ contracting$ officer$ in$writing$ of$ the$ Items$ and$ applicable$export$controls.$The$Receiving$Party$shall$have$the$right$to$decline$or$limit$the$receipt$of$such$Items,$and$any$task$requiring$receipt$of$such$Items.$The$transfer$of$Items$may$require$a$license$from$the$cognizant$agency$of$the$ U.S.$ or$ other$ governments.$ The$ parties$ agree$ to$ cooperate$ in$ securing$ any$ license,$which$ the$ cognizant$agency$ deems$ necessary$ in$ connection$ with$ this$ Agreement

8.++MISCELLANEOUS.++

+(A) Nothing$herein$shall$obligate$either$party$to$proceed$with$any$transaction$between$them,$and$each$party$

reserves$the$right,$in$its$sole$discretion,$to$terminate$the$discussions$contemplated$by$this$Agreement.$++

(B) This$Agreement$contains$the$entire$understanding$between$THE$UNDERSIGNED$and$Emelody$Worldwide$Inc.,$and$supersedes$all$prior$or$contemporaneous$written$or$oral$communications,$understandings,$and$agreements$between$THE$UNDERSIGNED$and$Emelody$Worldwide$Inc.$relating$to$the$subject$hereof.$This$Agreement$may$not$be$modified$except$by$in$writing$signed$by$the$duly$authorized$representatives$of$both$parties.$+

+(C) Neither$ party$may$ assign$ any$ or$ all$ of$ its$ rights$ or$ obligations$ under$ this$Agreement$without$ the$ prior$

written$consent$of$the$other,$except$that$either$party$may$assign$its$rights$and/or$obligations$under$this$Agreement$to$its$successor$in$connection$with$a$merger,$acquisition$or$consolidation,$or$to$the$purchaser$in$connection$with$the$sale$of$all$or$substantially$all$of$its$assets$without$the$prior$written$consent$of$the$other$party.$Any$unauthorized$assignment$shall$be$void$and$of$no$effect.$No$permitted$assignment$shall$relieve$a$party$of$its$obligations$hereunder$with$respect$to$Proprietary$Information$disclosed$to$that$party$prior$to$such$assignment.$Subject$to$the$foregoing$limitations,$this$Agreement$will$mutually$benefit$and$be$binding$upon$the$parties$and$their$permitted$successors$and$assigns.$+

+(D) The$construction,$interpretation$and$performance$of$this$Agreement$will$be$governed$by$and$construed$

in$accordance$with$the$laws$of$the$Commonwealth$of$Georgia,$without$regard$to$the$choice$or$conflict$of$law$provisions$thereof.$+

+(E) It$is$understood$and$agreed$that$no$failure$or$delay$by$either$THE$UNDERSIGNED$or$Emelody$Worldwide$

Inc.$in$exercising$any$right,$power$or$privilege$hereunder$shall$operate$as$a$waiver$thereof,$nor$shall$any$single$ or$ partial$ exercise$ thereof$ preclude$ any$ other$ or$ further$ exercise$ thereof,$ or$ the$ exercise$ of$ any$other$right,$power$or$privilege$hereunder.$No$waiver$of$any$terms$or$conditions$of$this$Agreement$shall$be$deemed$to$be$a$waiver$of$any$subsequent$breach$of$any$term$or$condition.$All$waivers$must$be$in$writing$and$signed$by$the$duly$authorized$representative$of$the$party$who$seeks$to$be$bound.$+

(F) If$ any$ part$ of$ this$ Agreement$ shall$ be$ held$ unenforceable,$ the$ remainder$ of$ this$ Agreement$ will$nevertheless$remain$in$full$force$and$effect.$+

+(G) This$Agreement$may$be$executed$in$counterparts,$including$by$facsimile,$each$of$which$may$be$deemed$an$

original$and$all$of$which$together$shall$constitute$a$single$instrument.$++

(H) Neither$ party$will$ use$ the$ name$of$ the$ other$ in$ any$ advertising$ or$make$ any$ form$of$ representation$ or$statement$ in$relation$ to$ the$purpose,$which$would$constitute$an$express$or$ implied$endorsement$of$any$

commercial$product$or$service$without$first$having$obtained$written$permission$of$the$other$party.$+$$$IN$WITNESS$WHEREOF,$the$parties$hereto$have$caused$this$Agreement$to$be$executed$by$their$duly$

authorized$representatives$as$of$the$Effective$Date.$
