Writing a Narrative

We’ve now read 3 short stories…..Most

Dangerous Game, The Necklace, and Cask of Amontillado. We should be experts on short stories. That being said, now it is our turn to create our own short stories.

Intro

Your short story can be a real event or one

that you simply made up.

Must be 2 FULL pages typed. We will be working in the computer lab next week, so even if you do not have a computer, you will have time to type it in class.

What is Expected

Remember the 5 elements of a short story.

What should be in our story?

Your short story should have a plot to it. That means

STUFF needs to happen within your story. 2 FULL pages TYPED worth of STUFF

I recommend brain-storming your plot like this… Event 1 Event 2 Event 3 Event 4 Event 5 etc…

PLOT

There needs to be characters within your

story. It does not have to be you, but usually a story has a narrator or a person telling the story.

CHARACTER

There must be some sort of conflict, or

problem within your story. At some point this conflict needs to get resolved….whether everyone lives happily ever after, someone dies, the bad guy runs away. It must be resolved and have falling action and a resolution.

CONFLICT

There should be some sort of central idea to

your story. It does not have to be a moral or a lesson, but the whole story needs to relate to this central idea, or theme.

THEME

This story has to take place somewhere. That

means you need to introduce a time and place for this story. Remember our sensory details?

SETTING

Your story must have 10 sensory images

within the story, and you must use each of the 5 senses at least once each!

1 example of personification (giving human

characteristics to non-humans) ex..”the computer was angry with me and would not work.” can a computer be angry like a human? No, that is personification

2 similes. Similies are comparisons using “like” or “as”. He was as hungry as a wolf. Yo’ mama is fat like an elephant

Dialogue there must be talking between characters in your story. “Go to your room,” he said. “Make me,” I replied. Then my mom hit me with an extension cord.

Figurative Language

Your story must use 5 of our vocab words from this

year. Refer back to old homework if you need to, but there must be 5 different vocabulary words.

Rough Draft Due Tuesday, September 24th. We will be doing in-class editing that day. If you don’t have your rough draft that day, you do not get credit.

We will be working on final drafts in the computer lab on Wednesday September 25th.

Final Draft Due Friday, September 27th. You need to have your rough draft, and your peer editing sheet attached to your final draft as well.

What else?

Your final draft must be in MLA format.
