Mossbourne Sixth Form Enrichment

Every Wednesday afternoon for two terms you will be participating in the enrichment programme which encompasses a wide range of pursuits: creative, intellectual and physical that will be stimulating and fun. There is a wide and varied range of opportunities for you to develop skills, interests and leadership qualities which will be vital for any university and job application. Through these activities you will be able to:

• explore new skills and interests• become more self-sufficient • take responsibility, show initiative and leadership qualities• show that you have good communication skills • contribute to your community through charity and volunteering work• discover a hidden talent or develop a lifelong interest

What’s on offer?

There are three broad areas to choose from: Get involved – charity and community work Get creative - cooking, steel pans and creative workshops Get active – sport and physical activities

BAND 1

GET INVOLVED

Do you want to make a difference, meet new people, and become a leader? The activities below are designed to help you get involved in your local community. You might teach an elderly person how to use the Internet or make a radical change in your community. Along the way you will learn things about yourself, you will broaden your experience of the world and acquire valuable life skills and qualities. What’s more if you are thinking of entering such professions as medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, teaching or social work your participation in such activities will greatly enhance your applications.

Working with the Elderly

Spend an afternoon helping the elderly in a state-of-the-art care home. St Anne’s Care home has beautiful gardens, an aromatherapy room, a library, a theatre and an arts and crafts room. You can teach IT to an elderly person and link them up to the net, do some baking with them, or take part in something arty and crafty whilst having fun and making a difference.

Primary School Ambassador or Mentor

Assist a primary school class with their day to day activities at Mossbourne Parkside or Mossbourne Riverside Academy. It’s a good opportunity to get experience in a role of authority in the classroom, if you are at all interested in working in education this is a fantastic opportunity. Previous groups have designed and built a rainforest bookshelf to help organise the classroom, it will definitely be a varied and creative experience. This will not only enhance your CV but will be a rewarding and eye-opening experience.

Community Apprentice with Envision

Want to make a difference in your community? Envision empowers young people to create positive change, so that they can build the sort of society we all want to live in. As a Community Apprentice you will; Set up a project which will benefit your community in partnership with local community groups. Develop key speaking and listening skills. You will also learn skills needed for employment and universities whilst carrying out the social action projects. The grand final takes place at a lavish venue every year and is great fun!

Volunteering Matters

A number of exciting opportunities offered through Volunteering Matters. Employers massively value skills developed through volunteering and will often look for this on job applications and CVs – start developing these skills now! Placements will include:

A-Plus Fun Childcare afterschool provision Victoria Park: Ranger’s Assistants/ Front of House Assistant – Volunteers will support

Victoria Park staff with grounds supervision, gardening and manning the front desk meeting and greeting customer and dealing with customers enquires. 

Positive Futures London: Admin Assistant– A volunteer will work closely with project officers to  support admin related tasks, shadow project visits and develop PFL social media campaign

Youth Leaders

Youth leaders will lead  and develop their own social action project to make a positive different in the community. Youth leaders will attend project planning training to equip themselves with the skills required to plan, lead and evaluate their social action project. Youth leaders will take the lead working flexibly with Positive Futures London staff based in lower Clapton.

Joybourne Sixth Form Centre

A great opportunity to develop communication, planning and organisation. Every Wednesday afternoon, you will support Joybourne students with their learning and activities that take place. If you are thinking about a career in medicine or healthcare – then definitely consider this as an option.

Band 2

GET CREATIVE

Express yourself! In this section you can get creative and learn a bit about dance, drama or music. For those of you who are budding artists and brimming with creativity – get yourself behind the stove, camera or mask and bring those inspirations to the forefront.

Start your Own Business – Young Enterprise

If the world of high finance, acquisitions and mergers, stocks and shares and … making a fat profit intrigues you then set up your own business. Through Young Enterprise you can form a company, sell shares in it, devise a product, market it and sell it to make a profit which you can then keep. Throughout your enterprise you will be guided and mentored by representatives of Young Enterprise who have years of experience and plenty of business acumen. If you are thinking of applying for business management or economics at university this would afford you a valuable and fun experience.

Creative Workshops with Lewis Buxton

Lewis Buxton is a writer, workshop leader & events producer. In 2016 he co-founded TOAST Poetry, an organisation dedicated to the professional development of poets. Prior to this he founded Burn After Reading Presents, a poetry evening promoting emerging writers. He assists Apples & Snakes in programming London’s premier monthly open mic night Jawdance. Time to develop your creative writing and performance skills with these incredibly exciting workshops.

Catering

Do you think of your future at University and question how you will survive those heady days with no culinary skills? Then look no further – student life can be more than a can of baked beans, when you apply the skills you will learn in Cooking. The Sixth Form team tried last year’s concoctions and they were all delectable. You will make some simple, nutritious delights. Well worth a try if you enjoy cooking or want to learn more.

Steel Pans

If you want to be part of a creative enterprise, then sign up to the steel pans enrichment, it will be an amazing chance to build a great team and give some great performances. If you have a musical inclination that you would like to reinvigorate and build upon in Year 12, then join steel pans.

Mandarin

Mandarin has a reputation as one of the hardest languages to learn. Learn a new language in just 9 weeks and impress your friends with your new skills.

Band 3

GET OUT THERE!

These activities are designed for you to get out there and get active. You’ll also be gaining new skills, learning teamwork and taking responsibility for others … and yes you will have a lot of fun.

Leaside Outdoor Activities

Explore the River Lea in a canoe or take to the trail on a mountain bike. This varied activity will see you engaging in all sorts of outdoor pursuits. If you fancy a challenge and wish to get fit, stay fit and explore a more rugged setting than this could be the option for you.

Rock Climbing

You’ll be attending one of the best rock climbing centres in Europe for this activity. This is a high octane activity and requires a variety of skills. A challenging activity, it needs high energy levels and good mental concentration. You’ll learn the ropes (literally) from experienced climbers and learn how to be responsible for the safety of others. Once you have finished the course you’ll end up with a proficiency award that will allow you to take it further if you wish.

Thai Boxing

This class takes place in an authentic Thai boxing gym. If you want to develop your martial arts skills or just keep fit and get into shape in a fun and fast-paced class, this is the activity for you. There will be plenty of sparring opportunities as you taken on this very physical but rewarding discipline.
