Calling the fearless, the fun loving and the foolhardyWray’s Original Scarecrow Festival and Fair now includes a Soap Box Derby! This is a timed race for home-built carts powered only by gravity over a set course – downhill of course…

Worzel invites you to enter a team in one or more of the following classes:

● Secondary School from the entrance to Roeburnscar Cottage to the Old Mill

● Adult from above Alcocks farm to the Old Mill

Children may, with parental permission, enter classes above their age group.

A map showing the course and starting points for each class is shown later.

The fastest competitor in each class will be awarded a hand-crafted trophy. In addition, medals will be awarded to the most imaginative cart and for the best dressed team.

Applications to enter can be made on the day, but numbers are limited so early entry is encouraged.

Entry fees: - each cart in each class

Primary School Age: FREE (donation accepted)

Secondary School age up to 16: £5.00

Adult: £15.00 per driver

Race timings: (approximate) for classes are as follows:

11.00 Registration & Scrutineering Outside George & Dragon (the village pub) LA2 8QG

12.00 Primary School Practice run and racing – short course

13.00 Secondary School Practice run and racing – medium course

14.00 Adults Practice run and racing – full course

Teams must accept the competition rules and technical and safety regulations.

Rules:

1. The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry to any team without explanation. Their decision is final.

2. All individual drivers must sign the disclaimer – see later.

3. Carts can be entered in more than one class and, subject to numbers of entries, can have up to 5 different drivers in each.

4. Each team will nominate a captain, who is responsible for their team members and cart(s).

5. Scrutineers will check all carts for safety and reliability, including a straight-line brake test, before being allowed on the course. They may direct a team’s captain to make modifications to their cart for safety or other reasons. Failure to meet Scrutineers’ requirements will incur disqualification - their decisions are final.

6. A short push start, by up to 2 team members, will be allowed.

7. In exceptional weather conditions the race may be postponed or cancelled, at the discretion of the organisers.

Technical Regulations:

1. The cart can only carry one driver at a time. The driver must be seated with feet first.

2. The maximum cart length is 7’ (2135mm), maximum cart width 4’ (1220mm).

3. Carts must have four wheels with pneumatic tyres or solid pram-type wheels.

4. Carts must have a good working braking system, operating on at least the two front wheels or the two rear wheels.

5. Bodywork and seats must be firmly fixed to the cart’s ‘chassis’.

6. All carts must have a reliable steering mechanism and a secure front towing eye.

7. There must be no means of propulsion other than gravity, i.e. no motors or pedals, etc.

8. The name or identification of each cart should be prominently displayed upon it.

9. All carts must have an 8” (200mm) white square prominently painted or fixed to the bodywork. A number will be given to be displayed on the cart once it has passed scrutineering.

Safety Regulations:

1. All team members will be required to sign a disclaimer at the time of registration.

2. Drivers must wear an approved safety helmet with chin strap. Cycle helmets are acceptable, though motor cycle/ski helmets are better!

3. Protective clothing must be worn; gloves, long sleeved top and full length trousers or overalls, with sturdy shoes or boots. Knee and elbow pads are advisable, but optional.

4. Seat belts are not compulsory, but if they are fitted the cart must have a four point fixing for them and also a substantial roll bar 1.5” (35mm) above the driver’s helmet and a second roll bar extended at least 1” (25mm) above the driver’s gloved hands when placed at 12 o clock on the steering wheel.

5. All carts must be of robust construction and have no sharp edges, protuberances or objects such as steering columns or brake levers liable to cause injury, especially puncture injuries.

6. The use of materials such as glass that could shatter is not permitted.

7. Bodywork and controls must not impede the driver’s ability to exit the vehicle unaided. Any doors or latches required for driver access must be readily operated from inside and outside the vehicle without the use of tools.

8. All team members must attend a safety briefing and follow safety signals/directions from race officials, including marshals. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

9. Spectators are encouraged, however they must remain behind safety barriers whilst carts are racing and follow marshals’ instructions at all times

Notes:

1. The course is designed to test not only the straight line speed of the cart but also the handling and agility – bear this in mind as you prepare your cart. The heaviest weight on the cart is the driver and this will affect the centre of gravity on the high speed corner!!

2. Spectators are very welcome – no charge of course - there will be a number of safe viewing points on the course, including at the start and finish.

3. Sponsorship and advertising is encouraged.

4. Should the Derby have to be cancelled entry fees will be re-imbursed.

5. For clarification, help or advice, please call Simon Carruthers, committee chairperson, on 07976 238802.

6. Wray Scarecrow Festival and Fair is organised on behalf of The Wray Institute, Registered Charity Number 1088712.
