A MESSAGE FROM FR. BARRETT

The Lord be with you!

The third Sunday in May is Pentecost Sunday. It falls on the calendar 50 days after Easter. We celebrate the Holy Spirit coming over Jesus’ disciples. Over the years I have been asked three questions frequently. The first one is, “Father, explain the Trinity to me. How can God be three in one?” The second one is “what will heaven be like?” The third one is “Who or what is the Holy Spirit, and what does the Holy Spirit accomplish?”

Let’s start by talking about the name for this Sunday-Pentecost Sunday. The Greek word for 50 is “pente.” We find in Lev. 23:15 “Beginning with the day after the Sabbath, the day on which you bring the sheaf for elevation, you shall count seven full weeks, you shall count to the day after the seventh week, fifty days. Then you will present a new grain offering to the Lord.” Therefore the Festival of Weeks or Pentecost in Judaism is one of the three mandatory pilgrimage festivals. When the temple stood in Jerusalem, the law required all male Jews to present themselves at the temple with a sacrifice for the three great observances. Passover fell on the first day of the month on the fourteenth day. The Festival of Weeks, celebrating the first harvest, fell fifty days later. It reminded Israel of God’s providing for them in the wilderness, and the giving of the law to Israel. The last great festival was the Festival of Booths. It fell on the fifteenth day of the seventh month. Faithful Jews,

Now you might say to yourself, “Who cares? I’m not a Jew.” Well, like so many things in Christianity, to understand Pentecost, we must find its roots in Judaism. The disciples were instructed to meet the Risen Lord in Galilee. Jn. records a post Easter appearance of Jesus where he eats breakfast with his disciples on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. So why did they show up back in Jerusalem 50 days after Easter and receive the Holy Spirit? After all, in Mt. they receive the Great Commission to tell the good news about Jesus to all nations. Wasn’t returning to Jerusalem going backward? Remember the importance of Pentecost in Judaism? In Acts 2:5 we read “Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.” The disciples knew that Jews from all over the Roman Empire would return to Jerusalem and the temple to observe the Jewish Pentecost. They would never have a larger audience to proclaim the news that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah and he had risen from the dead!

So what’s the story on the Holy Spirit? I think some Christians think the Holy Spirit is the presence of Jesus in the world, now freed from a mortal body. This would make the Son and the Holy Spirit one and the same. The Christian Triune confession God does not allow that. We confess that God is three in one, each person distinct, yet part of one. The Nicene Creed declares that the Spirit proceeds from the Father and Son. The Spirit is sent but is not the same. It would also contradict Jesus’ words to his disciples in Jn. “But I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go. For if I do not go, the Advocate will not come to you. But if I go, will send him to you.” (Jn. 16:7-8). Clearly, the Son and the Holy Spirit are not the same. The Holy Spirit reveals to us the presence of Jesus in the world, but the Spirit is not the Son.

The Trinity is sometimes described as Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier. That puts us close to an ancient heresy called “modalism.” However, as long as we maintain the distinct nature of the persons of the Trinity, it is an appropriate way of describing how humans experience God. All revelations of God are rooted in the community experience. The unique role of the Spirit then, the Sanctifier, is to reveal the reality of the Risen and Living Lord to us, and help us abide in him. To put it simply, sanctification through the Holy Spirit, is us becoming more like Jesus.

We are all works in process. We have not arrived at perfection yet. We are far from it. We are like clay being shaped by the Holy Spirit and knowing Christ through the Spirit. Thank God for giving us the journey!

Peace be with you,Father Bill

In the latest copy of the Central Florida Episcopalian Bishop Brewer asked the question in his message: “How do we live out our faith in the real world’?

As Daughters and Christians, faith is our belief and conviction that Jesus is the Son of God. ‘We believe that he rose from the dead and is sitting at the right hand of God and that he will come again to judge the living and the dead’. So how do we live out our faith?

Well there are several ways we could do so. I list a few. We should always arm ourselves with the scripture. Meaning that we should take time to read and study the Bible so that we are ready to defend ourselves if and when challenged regarding the Word of God.

Be happy. At our Spring Retreat in April the speaker, Roger Grenier suggested that as Christians we should be beautiful for God. To be beautiful we have to be happy. Happiness can be contagious; on the flip side if we are in the company of unhappy people we will become unhappy.

Support and be kind to others. In college we were challenged to go out into the world and be kind one to another. We need to treat each other with kindness even when ‘others’ are not kind to us and we need to be supportive of each other. Our church pantry is one example of how we can support each other.

Be forgiving: “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us”. Unfortunately, we sin every day. When we sin against our brothers and sisters we sin against God (weather it is in word, thought, and deed). We should be asking for forgiveness when we hurt someone and we should forgive when we are hurt. This is required of us!

Be thankful: St Paul said in everything give thanks. Always look for a glimmer of hope and give thanks even when we things are not the way we want them to be. Give thanks for the church and the fact that we can worship without fear of persecution. Let us give thanks for what we have and not worry about what we do not have.

Let us pray, serve and evangelized in our own small way. We will be blessed immensely when we live out our faith in the real world.

ECW had an active May as our Mother’s Day fashion show luncheon was held with a trunk sale from Bon Worth ladies shop on Saturday May 12th.  Bob Evans catered the luncheon and ladies left with their purchases and a carnation.  On Wednesday May 23 we carpooled to the Harn Museum of Art and Natural History Museum in Gainesville.  All of us enjoyed the Butterfly Rainforest.  Our lunch stop was at the Camellia Court Cafe which gave us a nice break between museums.  On June 10th after the 9:00 am service we will have an election for the new board members as the two years term is expiring for current officers.  Ladies please stay afterwards to vote.  We are convening for the summer months and will be meeting back in September.

Education for Ministry (EfM) Graduation

On Sunday, June 3, 2018 the following persons will have completed four years of work in the EfM program and receive their diplomas: Maryann Brennan, Elizabeth Herrick and Nancy McGuckin.

EfM is a four-year program offered by the School of Theology at the University of the South located in Sewanee, Tennessee. Through study, prayer and reflection, EfM helps participants move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God’s kingdom as they better apprehend the connections between their faith and their lives.

Lay-persons face the difficult and often subtle task of interpreting the richness of the church’s faith in a complex and confusing world. They need a theological education that supports their faith and helps them to connect that faith to their daily lives. The EfM program provides people with an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian service and carry out their ministries.

The seminar group is the nucleus of the program. A group consists of 6 to 12 participants and a trained mentor who meet weekly over the course of 36 weeks. The Advent group meets on Thursday mornings from 9:30 – 12:00 with mentor Gordon Herrick. Participants are given weekly assignments to study with the help of resource guides and reading texts provided by the University of the South. Year 1 involves Old Testament; Year 2 studies New Testament; Year 3 reads Church History; and the Year 4 readings involve Theology and Ethics. The weekly seminar meetings focus on dialogue about the reading for the week and a time for theological reflection.

We have had an EfM group at Advent since 2005 and have had 20 plus graduates over the years. If you are interested in more information about EfM speak to one of the former graduates or Gordon Herrick (352-291-4878) or [email protected].

Sunrise Hats & Mittens

Here it is June and the beginning of another warm summer. If you can crochet, knit, or sew, please consider helping us. While you are enjoying the cool air conditioning inside, perhaps you might make a hat or two (or maybe even some mittens) for needy children of Sunrise Elementary School. The items are delivered in early October—just in time for the start of cold weather.

Easy crochet or knit patterns for hats and mittens and a sewing pattern for fleece hats are available.

Also, please consider donating acrylic, worsted weight yarn in child friendly colors. Even small balls of leftover yarn can be used for stripes or pom-poms.

If you are interested in using your time and talent making hats and mittens or would like more information, please contact me at (352) 873-7729.

Security IssueThe past two Sundays I have found the Office Entrance door unlocked before the 10 AM service. We have been trying to keep all the doors locked with the exception of the main Church entrance. This is an effort to keep everyone as safe as possible during both services. Whoever is opening the Church before the 8 AM service should relock the Office Entrance once the Church is opened.

Any vestry members that attends the 8 AM service, please take it upon yourself to check the Office Entrance door as well as any other doors that may have been used.

Thank you for your help,Dick Purnell
