Family Weekend President’s Reception

The University of Scranton’s President, Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., extends his

warmest greeting to you! Enjoy refreshments and the opportunity to

meet members of our campus community as well as other parents from

all over the country. Space is limited, and tickets are required at $15 per

person.

University Players Present: The Birds

In Aristophanes’ classic comedy, The Birds, Euelpides and Pisthetarus

escape Athens, where the citizens are too busy arguing about laws, and

become denizens of Cloud Cuckooland, where they live as birds. As funny

and topical as it was when it was written in 414 BCE, The Birds questions

if we can ever build a wall around those we want to keep out. Tickets

can be purchased by calling the box office at (570) 941-4318.

Late Night at Scranton: Family Outdoor Movie Night

Bring a blanket and gather as a family to catch an outdoor movie on the

Dionne Green! Plan to enjoy popcorn and other classic movie snacks at

this annual event which is sponsored by Late Night at Scranton .

Scranton Sightseeing Visit highlights of the city we call home! Experience a piece of

nature inthe city with a walk along the Lackawanna River Heritage

Valley Trail, orfor a historical perspective, visit the Steamtown National

Historic Site ison Lackawanna Avenue. Want a combination of the two? Head

upto Nay Aug Park and take a walk around the park, followed by

a visit tothe Everhart Museum. Information about these and other area

Campus ToursAs you take a campus tour, not only will you visit our exceptional buildings, you’ll also learn about the University’s rich history and culture.

Bike ScrantonBike Scranton is a cooperative program between the University of Scranton Office of Sustainability and the Lackawanna Valley Heritage Authority. All University of Scranton students and families may borrow a bicycle as long as they can provide a photo ID and are at least 18 years of age. Bikes will be available on the DeNaples Center patio, and tours are self-guided.

Special Interest SessionsCareer Development and Your Student Representatives from The Gerard R. Roche Center for Career Development will discuss ways in which they help students focus oncareer decisions that are consistent with their unique talents,

aspirations, and vision for living.

E, I and U: Emotional Intelligence Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize our own

and others'feelings, motivate ourselves and others, and manage our own

emotions and those in our relationships. Contrary to popular belief, EI is

much more important than IQ when predicting life and work success,

and it hasa more profound effect on your relationships and outcomes.

Dr. Jeremy R. Brees, Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship, will

discuss emotional intelligence in a clear and concise way, and show

how it ispossible to develop your own EI. 

A Plant-Based Diet: The Benefits Learn about the benefits of a plant-based diet and how to begin to incorporate positive changes into your daily diet, increase your consumption of whole foods and decrease the risk of chronic disease. Presented by Dr. Joan Grossman.

Now, Director of Community and Government Relations Julie Schumacher Cohen will moderate a panel of Scranton “experts,” who will fill you in on everything you need to know about the Electric City. You will leave this session having learned how the University and community partner with each other and also where to shop, eat and locate available discounts during Family Weekend.Everything You Ever Wanted to Ask a JesuitUniversity Chaplain Rev. Rick Malloy, S.J., shares with his audience how The University of Scranton gets students thinking about their own spirituality and impact on the world. During this session, Father Rick will answer questions that you have always wanted to ask a Jesuit.

Siblings’ UHome can feel quiet when your college student is not there. Here is the opportunity for your children to reconnect and catch up. Our Resident Assistants have put together exciting activities appropriate for all ages.

Community Fair Stop by the Royal Way to explore a variety of goods and services that our area small businesses have to offer. The fun will include games, family photo opportunities and student club fundraisers.

Refugee Simulation Take a 20 minute journey, as students and families become enlightened on the struggles of refugees around the world. Arrive at the border as you’re given a refugee identity and walk through five interactive stations, including food, water, and shelter. The impact of this event will last well past the weekend as you learn how to make a difference in the lives of refugees in your community. Presented by the Center for Service and Social Justice.

Reflections at Chapman Lake Take a scenic ride to Chapman Lake and tour the grounds where our students connect with their faith and our Jesuit mission when attending one of our many retreat offerings. Members of the Campus Ministries staff will be available to provide information to visitors, and the grounds will be available to explore. Address: 1226 Chapman Lake Road, Jermyn, PA. In Concert: The Joseph Boga OctetJoin us for a special evening of live jazz as we welcome The Joseph Boga Octet to the Houlihan-McLean Center. Boga has performed in a diverse array of venues, both in the U.S. and abroad, with an impressive roster of both established and emerging artists. Members of his octet are among the most accomplished young jazz musicians on the NY scene, and the ensemble’s recent performances include a week long engagement at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.
