Australian Standards (ATSIL)The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers comprise seven Standards which outlinewhat teachers should know and be able to do. The Standards are interconnected, interdependent and overlapping. The Standards are grouped into three domains of teaching:

Professional Knowledge Professional Practice Professional Engagement.

In practice, teaching draws on aspects of all three domains. Within each Standard, focusareas provide further illustration of teaching knowledge, practice and professionalengagement. These are then separated into Descriptors at four professional careerstages: Graduate, Proficient, Highly Accomplished and Lead.

The focus areas and descriptors identify the components of quality teaching at each careerstage. They constitute agreed characteristics of the complex process of teaching. An

effective teacher is able to integrate and apply knowledge, practice and professionalengagement as outlined in the descriptors to create teaching environments in whichlearning is valued.

Chaplain

A chaplaincy program is an optional service introduced into a state school to provide students, staff and parents with support which may have a religious and/or spiritual component. Chaplaincy services provide an additional adult role model in schools.Whilst personally modelling and owning their own faith positions or belief, chaplains avoid any implications that any one religion, denomination or other set of beliefs is advantageous or superior to any other denomination, religion or belief. A school's chaplaincy program complements other support services in the school such as those offered by the Guidance Officer. A chaplaincy service is not a counselling service. Chaplains do not refer to externalagencies. Chaplains report issues of concern to the principal and the principal is responsible for external referral processes. .

Classroom WalkthroughsClassroom walk thoughts are conducted several times a term. A Classroom Walk Through isan organised visit through a school’s learning areas. The participants (the Principal, Master Teacher) move in and out of classrooms looking at student work and talking with students. It is learning focused supervision NOT teacher focused supervision. It is NOT an evaluative tool or something that goes in your personnel file. It is an integral part of a learning community. Staff orientation and feedback is given after the visit.

CleanersStudents can help by undertaking the following tasks before they leave the classroom at2:30pm.

All rubbish collected from carpet and put into bins. All books and other items to be removed from carpet and between desks. All chairs to be placed on desks so that cleaners have access to the desk surface.

(Standing upright on desktop) No books are to be placed on the desktop so that surface can be wiped over. All windows are to be closed and locked. Lights and fans are to be switched off by the last person leaving the room. All computers are to be shut down and turned off at the power point. The room is to be locked by the teacher.

Teachers please note the cleaner will vary her hours when she is in your classroom.

Therefore: Security of classrooms, that is locking-up, is the responsibility of the classroom

teacher.(If the cleaner needs to enter a room after you have left, she will have her own keys toopen up.)

Cleaners no longer wash towels etc. for teachers. Teachers are responsible for the teachers’ staff room.ie washing up, keeping the tabletops tidy, placing scraps in the bins etc. Cleaners will only vacuum the carpet. They do not pick up things off the floor.

Head LiceEducation Queensland recognises that the occurrence of head lice is the most common insect infestation in humans throughout the world. Education Queensland acknowledges that although head lice infestation may affect people of any age, nationality, gender or socio-economic status, in Queensland, infestation occurs mainly in children of primary school age. It is seen as much a social issue as a health or educational issue, and the way that it is approached can have significant influence on a student's emotional, social and educational development.Parents have the prime responsibility for the detection and treatment of head lice on their children.Schools take into account that the main route of transmission for head lice is head-to-head contact and promote general measures that help in the prevention of infestations.Responsibilities

OneSchoolThe OneSchool application is capable of providing a wealth of student information, theability to track and monitor student progress, analyse data, etc. to school, regional andcorporate users.

It supports the processes for curriculum planning and implementation by providingfunctionality to develop unit plans and learning plans. These plans form the basis of theteaching-learning cycle of planning, teaching, assessment and reporting of curriculum.Accessibility to core Education Queensland and Queensland Studies Authority curriculumdocuments are possible from directly within the OneSchool application.Teachers are able to access the Australian Curriculum, QCAR Essential Learnings, theStandards, and syllabus documents. Also accessible are various teaching and learningframeworks so teachers can identify the curriculum intent and build relevant andcustomised curriculum plans for their students.

OneSchool enables schools to access and interpret a range of additional data to provide arich picture of a student's strengths and needs. Achievement data set sources include:National Assessment Program (NAPLAN) records (benchmarks, assessment test data),diagnostic/standardised assessment data, progress maps (ESL Bandscales, Early LearningRecord) and unit assessment data. Data may be viewed at an individual student, class orcohort level.OneSchool provides a shared student record where the data recorded in the student recordin OneSchool will become available to a new school on transfer or enrolment of a student. The shared student record will provide schools with an enhanced ability to ensure continuityof student learning.

The Specific Educational Requirements (SER) module provides capacity to view andindividualise Support Provisions, Referrals and associated Records of Contact, OptionalReporting choices and Attachments. Otitis-MediaOtitis Media (middle ear inflammation) is very common in Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander children. It is also common in young non-Indigenous children. It can begin atbabyhood and continue through the school years.Young children are most likely to experience Otitis Media between six months and one yearof age. About 80% of all young children will have Otitis Media at least once by the age of five.Testing over the years has shown that between 30% and 90% of Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander children attending school will have a Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL) on any givenschool day. This is usually caused by Otitis Media (OM). Children with a CHL caused by OtitisMedia (CHL:OM) may have problems developing language skills and learning at school.

The teacher's main responsibility is to provide an appropriate education program for eachchild. As large numbers of children (between 30% and 90%) attending schools in Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander communities may have CHL:OM, hearing health managementneeds to be part of every teacher's curriculum planning. Unlike other specialist support staff, the teacher sees the children daily and can provide targeted programs to support childrenwith CHL:OM.The following strategies for improving the listening environment will ensure all childrenlisten more effectively.

Create good acoustic conditions

Some classrooms conduct sound well and promote good listening (and good learning)while others don't. This is described as classroom acoustic conditions. To improvethe acoustic conditions of your classroom:o provide carpet on the floors, use carpet tiles or rugso put small pieces of carpet or tennis balls under the feet of chairs and tablesto minimise drag noiseo hang curtains or put pictures over windowso hang nets from the ceilingo turn off air conditioners and noisy equipment during key teaching timeso use soft furnishings

Minimise background noiseBackground noise in a classroom interferes with the child's ability to hear you andfollow class discussions. It also makes it harder for the child to concentrate in class. It is important for you to become aware of noise levels in your classroom. Some of thethings that create background noise are:o children talking in the backgroundo children moving around the roomo moving chairs and deskso electrical equipment, for example, fans, computers, air conditioners, overhead projectorso neighbouring classroomso outside activities, for example, sports, mowing, trafficThe teacher can reduce the effects of background noise by moving away from the noisesource if possible and moving closer to children.

Use amplification devicesThere are many amplification devices that are available for children. Audiologistsfrom Australian Hearing will provide hearing aids and FM systems for children with adiagnosed hearing loss. Australian Hearing may also recommend amplificationdevices which would be suitable for individual children with conductive hearing loss(CHL:OM). Amplification devices include:o hearing aidso FM systemso whole-class soundfield amplification systems (SAS)

Soundfield amplification systems are in every classroom at Camooweal State School toimprove listening conditions and minimise the negative effects of background noise for allchildren. They do not replace the need for individual hearing aids or FM systems for childrenwith a diagnosed hearing loss. Teachers are to wear their Sound field amplification systemat all times. All amplification devices must be checked regularly to make sure they are working properly.Develop the habit of checking them each morning.

If there are two people on duty in an area, you cross paths but should not stand together for the duration of the time allocated. You may as colleagues determine who will cover which parts of the area.

As a school we should ensure that we all give a common and consistent message about acceptable behaviours and consequences.
