BEYOND THE SEA (JMF 2017/2018) WORDBOOK Song 1: Welcome Aboard! Shanty number 1 (When I was one) When I was one I wanted fun the day I went to sea. I climbed aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me “We’re going this way, that way, forwards and backwards Over the Irish sea.” A bottle of rum to fill my tum and that’s the life for me. When I was two I lost my shoe the day I went to sea. I climbed aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me “We’re going this way, that way, forwards and backwards Over the Irish sea.” A bottle of rum to fill my tum and that’s the life for me. When I was three I felt so free the day I went to sea. I climbed aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me “We’re going this way, that way, forwards and backwards Over the Irish sea.” A bottle of rum to fill my tum and that’s the life for me. When I was four I scrubbed the floor the day I went to sea. I climbed aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me “We’re going this way, that way, forwards and backwards Over the Irish sea.” A bottle of rum to fill my tum and that’s the life for me. When I was five I learnt to dive the day I went to sea. I climbed aboard a pirate ship and the captain said to me “We’re going this way, that way, forwards and backwards Over the Irish sea.” A bottle of rum to fill my tum and that’s the life for me.

Song 2: Sailing for Adventure

When the course is laid and the anchor’s weighed, A sailor’s blood begins racing. With our hearts unbound and our flag unfurled, We’re on our way and off to see the world. On our way and off to see the world.Hey ho we’ll go anywhere the wind is blowing,Manly men are we!Sailing for adventure on the deep blue sea.

Danger walks the deck, we say ‘what the heck’,And laugh at the perils we’re facing.Ev’ry storm we ride is its own reward,And people die by falling overboard!People die by falling overboard.Hey ho we’ll go anywhere the wind is blowing,Hoist the sails and sing.Sailing for adventure on the big blue wet thing!

There are distant lands with burning sandsThat call across the ocean. There are bingo games ev’ry fun filled day,And margaritas at the midnight buffet.Margaritas at the midnight buffet.Hey ho we’ll go anywhere the wind is blowing,Should have took the train.Sailing for adventure on the bounding main.

The salty breezes whisper, who knows what lies ahead?I just know I was born to lead the life my father led.The stars will be our compass wherever we may roam,Our mates will always be just like a family,And though we may put into port the sea is always home!

O we’ll chase our dreams standing on our own,Over the horizon to the great unknown.Hey ho we’ll go anywhere the wind is blowing,Bold and brave and free!Sailing for adventure (spoken) “It’s so nauseating”Sailing for adventure (spoken) “So exhilarating”Sailing for adventure (spoken) “We’re all celebrating”On the deep blue sea.

Song 3: Michael row the wide water

Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah.Michael row the boat ashore, hallelujah.Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah.Sister help to trim the sail, hallelujah.

Jordan’s river is chilly and cold, hallelujah.Chills the body but not the soul, hallelujah.

The water’s wide I can’t cross over,And neither have I wings to fly.Give me a boat than can carry two,We both shall row, my love and I.

(all singing but in canon part 2 first)I see a ship upon the sea,It’s loaded deep, as deep can be.But not as deep as the love I’m in,I know not if I sink or swim.

Part 1The river is deep, the river is wide, hallelujah,Milk and honey on the other side, hallelujah. And show the best that I can be. Hallelujah!

Part 2As I look out across the seaA bright horizon beckons me.It calls my soul to be proud and free,And show the best that I can be.And show the best that I can be. Hallelujah!

Song 4: Octopus’s Garden

I’d like to be under the sea In an octopus’s garden in the shade. He’d let us in, knows where we’ve been In his octopus’s garden in the shade.I’d ask my friends to come and see an octopus’s garden with me.I’d like to be under the seaIn an octopus’s garden in the shade.

We would be warm below the stormIn our little hideaway beneath the waves.Resting our head on the sea bedIn an octopus’s garden near a cave.We would sing and dance around because we know we can’t be found.I’d like to be under the seaIn an octopus’s garden in the shade.

We would shout and swim about the coral that lies beneath the waves.Oh what joy for ev’ry girl and boy,Knowing they’re happy and they’re safe.We would be so happy you and me.No-one there to tell us what to do.I’d like to be under the sea In an octopus’s garden with you.In an octopus’s garden with you.In an octopus’s garden with you.

Song 5: Beyond the Sea

Somewhere beyond the sea, somewhere waiting for me,My lover stands on golden sandsAnd watches the ships that go sailing.Somewhere beyond the sea, right there waiting for me.If I could fly like birds on high,Into open arms I’d go sailing.

It’s far beyond the star, it’s near beyond the moon.I know beyond a doubt, my heart will lead me there soon.

We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just as before.Happy we’ll be beyond the sea,And never again I’ll go sailing.

Part 1Somewhere beyond the sea, someone is waiting for meMy lover’s there on the shoreGolden sands. That go sailing by.Somewhere beyond the sea, someone is waiting for me.If I could fly like the birdsOpen arms. I’d go sailing.

It’s far beyond the star, it’s near beyond the moon.I know beyond a doubt, my heart will lead me there soon.

We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just as before.Happy we’ll be beyond the sea,And never again I’ll go sailing. No more sailing, no more sailing,Never again will I go sailing by. No more sailing. No more sailing!

Part 2Somewhere beyond the sea, somewhere waiting for me,My lover stands on golden sandsAnd watches the ships that go sailing.Somewhere beyond the sea, right there waiting for me.If I could fly like birds on high,Into open arms I’d go sailing.

It’s far beyond the star, it’s near beyond the moon.I know beyond a doubt, my heart will lead me there soon.

We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just as before.Happy we’ll be beyond the sea,And never again I’ll go sailing.Happy we’ll be beyond the sea,And never again I’ll go sailing. No more sailing. No more sailing!

Song 6: Homeward Bound

We’re homeward bound across the blue sea,Going home. We’re homeward bound across the blue seaAnd we’re bound for the old country. Then away love away, going home. We’re homeward bound this very dayAnd we’re bound for the old country.

Part 1The sails are unfurled and the anchor’s away.Going home. She heels to the breeze as she gathers her weighAnd we’re bound for the old country. Then away love away, going home. We’re homeward bound this very dayAnd we’re bound for the old country.

Part 2Ah……………..going home.Ah……………..and we’re bound for the old country. Then away love away, going home. We’re homeward bound this very dayAnd we’re bound for the old country.

Both We’re homeward bound across the blue sea,Going home. We’re homeward bound across the blue seaAnd we’re bound for the old country. Then away love away, going home. We’re homeward bound this very dayAnd we’re bound for the old country.

We’re going home, we’re going home, we’re going home.Going home. We’re going home.

OCEAN COMMOTION – SONG LYRICS

ACT 1

Welcome

Welcome to the wonders of the ocean.Welcome to the splendours of the sea. It’s a place where we can be, Living wild and swimming free,In a wonderworld under the sea.

Welcome to the wonders of the ocean.Welcome to the splendours of the sea. It’s a place where we can be, Living wild and swimming free,In a wonderworld under the sea.

(Narration 1)

Song 1 – Deep in the Ocean

Ocean commotion, catastrophe at sea. They lay the blame on me!Ocean commotion, catastrophe at sea. They lay the blame on me!

Part 1When there’s been a big commotionWay down underneath the oceanEverybody lays the blame on me.Someone drops in for a swimAnd hops right out without a limb,And everybody lays the blame on me.

I’m sick of being picked on and I’m tired of snide remarks.I’ve never heard a pleasant word about the poor old sharks.

Ocean commotion, catastrophe at sea. They lay the blame on me!Ocean commotion, catastrophe at sea. They lay the blame on me!

I’m sick of being picked on and I’m tired of snide remarks.I’ve never heard a pleasant word about the poor old sharks.

Page 11: comptonprimaryschool.org  · Web viewSailing for adventure on the big blue wet thing! There are distant lands with burning sands. ... And neither have I wings to fly. Give me a boat

Part 2Ocean commotion, catastrophe at sea. They lay the blame on me!Ocean commotion, catastrophe at sea. They lay the blame on me!

I’m sick of being picked on and I’m tired of snide remarks.I’ve never heard a pleasant word about the poor old sharks.

But nothing could be ruderThan a moody barracuda,And the starfishes are vicious as can be.When lobsters are unhappyThey get horrible and snappy,All the same they always lay the blame on me.

I’m sick of being picked on and I’m tired of snide remarks.I’ve never heard a pleasant word about the poor old sharks.

BothNowadays it’s trendyTo be very dolphin friendly,And the seals are quite appealing I agree. They lock you up in jail If you so much as touch a whale,But no-one ever thinks of saving poor old me.

I’m sick of being picked on and I’m tired of snide remarks.I’ve never heard a pleasant word about the poor old sharks.

So when there’s been a big commotionWay down underneath the oceanThink before you lay the blame on me.I’m only doing what comes nat’rally. So pick on other fishes in the sea. NOT ME!

(Narration 2)

Song 2 – Strangers in the sea

Part 1 (part 2 silent)If I promise to be good then will you let me stay?I like to be beside you, don’t make me go away.Your skin’s so smooth and shiny although mine is coarse and rough.I realise that in your eyes I’m just not good enough.

Part 2 (part 1 silent)You’re a fish and I’m a mammal, you breathe water, I need air. You’re cold blooded, I’m warm hearted, we would make a pretty pair.I like having conversations with relations far away. You’re the strong and silent type, you like to fight, I love to play.

Both togetherWe swim along together then we quickly turn away,For we are strangers in the sea and that’s the way we’ll stay.

REPEAT whole song

(Narration 3)

Song 3 – The big bad lad of the ocean

I come from a very old family, For millions of years we’ve been at sea. We’ve been accused, maligned and abused, But they’ll never get the better of me.

‘Cos I’m the big bad lad of the ocean, I’m the mean machine of the sea.You never know which way I’ll go, so don’t get too close to me.I never show my emotions, I’m the coldest fish in the sea.You never know which way I’ll go, so don’t get too close to me.

The whole of my life I can never sleep,Patrolling the ocean all alone. The day that I stop is the day that I dropTo the bottom of the sea like a stone.

‘Cos I’m the big bad lad of the ocean, I’m the mean machine of the sea.You never know which way I’ll go, so don’t get too close to me.I never show my emotions, I’m the coldest fish in the sea.You never know which way I’ll go, so don’t get too close to me.Big bad lad of the sea. (spoken) That’s me!

(Narration 4)

Song 4 – Hitchin’ a ride

Here we are, goin’ nowhere, goin’ ev’rywhere and nowhere at all. We’ve been high, we’ve been low. We’ve been fast, we’ve been slow.Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a whale is the way that we go.

Here we are, goin’ nowhere, goin’ ev’rywhere and nowhere at all. We’ve been back, we’ve been forth. We’ve been south, we’ve been north.Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a whale is the way that we go.

Wherever we may roam, we never leave our home.Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a whale is the way that we go.

BAND ONLY

Wherever we may roam, we never leave our home.Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a whale is the way that we go.Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a whale is the way that we go.Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a whale is the way that we go.Oh yeah.

(Narration 5)

Song 5 – Synchronized swimmers

Everything we do we do in unison.Everywhere we go we go as one.A thousand of a kind forever entwined.Stop, and carry on.

Scattering our pattern in the water.Climbing to the top and diving down.A cloud of silver fish with simply one wish.Stop, and turn around.

We are the synchronized swimmers of the sea.Travel the ocean in parallel motion.Everything we do we do in unison.Everywhere we go we go as one.A thousand of a kind forever entwined.Stop, and carry on.Stop, and now we’re gone.

REPEAT whole song

(Narration 6)Song 6 – Look out for the hook!

Gather round and listen well for I have sorry tales to tell,You will learn from what I have to say. Many friends of mine have ended hanging from a line suspended. Not a pleasant way to end your days.

(part 1)Look out for the hook! Look out for the hook!Look out for the hook, look out for the hook!Look out for the hook! Look out for the hook!Look out for the hook, look out for the hook!Look out for the hook!Look out for the hook!Look out for the hook! (spoken) Look out! Look out! LOOK OUT!

(part 2)Look out for the hook! Look out for the hook!Keep your eyes open and keep your mouth shut.Look out for the hook! Look out for the hook!Keep your eyes open and keep your mouth shut.Look out for the hook!Look out for the hook!Look out for the hook! (spoken) The hook! The hook! LOOK OUT!

Both togetherGather round and listen well for I have sorry tales to tell,You will learn from what I have to say.Other mates of mine have met their fates inside a fishing net,Once they’re in they never get away.

(part 1)Look out for the net! Look out for the net!Look out for the net, look out for the net!Look out for the net! Look out for the net!Look out for the net, look out for the net!Look out for the net!Look out for the net!Look out for the net! (spoken) Look out! Look out! LOOK OUT!

(part 2)Look out for the net! Look out for the net! This is a lesson you’ll never forget. Look out for the net! Look out for the net! This is a lesson you’ll never forget.Look out for the net!Look out for the net!Look out for the net! (spoken) The net! The net! LOOK OUT!

Song 7 – The little fish that got away

I have met fish down inside the net fish.Wet fish, pet fish, big as you can get fish.Fat fish, flat fish, parrot fish and catfishBut I’m the little one that got away.

Ha ha ha, hee hee hee. Can’t catch me in the deep blue sea.Ha ha ha, hee hee hee. They’ve had all their chips but me.

Jawfish, crawfish, salmon fish and saw fish.I’ve seen more fish than you saw before fish.Old fish, cold fish, slippery to hold fishBut I’m the little one that got away.

Ha ha ha, hee hee hee. Can’t catch me in the deep blue sea.Ha ha ha, hee hee hee. They’ve had all their chips but me.

Now they’re fried fish, barbequed and dried fish.Baked and flaked and put into a pie dish.Roasted, toasted, gobbled up inside fishBut I’m the little one that got away.

Song 8 – On with the show

My audience is waiting and I hate to let them down,Even though I’m feeling very low. They’ve come from miles around to see a great performing clown. So let’s get on with the show.

Just watch me loop the loop and jump through the hoop,Flip my flippers and flap my fluke. All the while I will try to smile. And afterwards the crowd applauds and just before they go,It’s one more time around the poolI’ll play the game and act the fool,And that’s the end of the show.

I’m going through the motions while I’m thinking of the oceans,Remembering the life I used to know. They would have been impressed if they had seen me at my best. But let’s get on with the show.

Page 17: comptonprimaryschool.org  · Web viewSailing for adventure on the big blue wet thing! There are distant lands with burning sands. ... And neither have I wings to fly. Give me a boat

Just watch me loop the loop and jump through the hoop,Flip my flippers and flap my fluke. All the while I will try to smile. And afterwards the crowd applauds and just before they go,It’s one more time around the poolI’ll play the game and act the fool,And that’s the end of the show.

I’m here to entertain you and it’s useless to complain,And I know you all have problems of your own.But if I stay here any longer I will go insane.

Song 10 – Blue WhaleNB We aren’t singing verse 2 (after ‘nine to five’) but it is on the CD so please ignore when rehearsing

Blue Whale living in the deep green sea.Wish you could answer my questions. Wish you could speak to me.If you’re so smart how can it be you play all day beneath the sea,While we must strive to stay alive, working from nine to five?

Blue Whale living in the deep green sea.Wish you could answer my questions. Wish you could speak to me.If you’re as clever as they say how come you never stay away,From whaling boats when they attack why do you not fight back? Then the Blue Whale sighed as she replied:

Making war is only for the foolish.Fighting force with force is not the way.We have learned to understand the language of the land. Now it’s their turn hear what we say.

No-one on this planet is an island. Each one has a special part to play. We have learned to understand the language of the land. Now it’s their turn hear what we say.

Welcome to the wonders of the ocean.Welcome to the splendours of the sea. It’s a place where we can be living wild and swimming freeIn a wonderworld under the sea.

OCEAN COMMOTION – NARRATIONS

ACT 1

Narration 1:

Porpoise 1 Bottlenose dolphin all aloneSwims into the forbidden zone,And makes its way to a nearby bayFor this is where the humans play.

Porpoise 2 Stop, little bottlenose, go back home.It isn’t safe there on your own.Swim little dolphin, swim to your school. The big, wide world can be oh so cruel.

Bottlenose Can’t stop now, I’m in a hurry.Trust me, Porpoises, don’t you worryIf I delay I may be lateAnd then my playmates will not wait.

Porpoise 1 You dolphins never understandThe ways of strangers from the land,But do beware my little friendOr their nets will get you in the end.

Bottlenose Porpoises are so suspicious.Human beings are not malicious. They go to school just as we doAnd care for one another too.

Porpoise 2 They rob our sea without a careFor any creature living there,And throw back rubbish in return. They may go to school but they never learn.

Porpoises Go if you must but promise you’ll(together) Be back again in time for school.

We’ll wait for you, but do bewareThere’s danger lurking everywhere.

Hammerhead Wait, Bottlenose, I’ll come with you.(looking ‘yobbish’) I’m very fond of humans too (licking lips)

Although they swim away in fearThe very minute I appear.

Page 20: comptonprimaryschool.org  · Web viewSailing for adventure on the big blue wet thing! There are distant lands with burning sands. ... And neither have I wings to fly. Give me a boat

Bottlenose Oh no, Hammerhead, go away. That isn’t what my playmates say.You terrorize the neighbourhood.Stay away for your own good.

Hammerhead Go on, blame it on the Sharks.(sulking) Everybody else does.

(Song 1 – Ocean Commotion)

Narration 2:

Bottlenose Snap out of it, Hammerhead, it’s all in your head

Hammerhead There’s nothing wrong with my head.

Bottlenose Why don’t you try being good for a change?

Hammerhead Well, if I promise to be good then will you let me stay?

It’s a load of old codswallop!

Great White When I was a kid I did pretty wellBy relying on my eye and my sense of smell,And I landed a very important jobAs head of the heavy underwater mob.And when I’m dead, and when I’m goneHammerhead you’re gonna carry on,But before you do I’m telling youGet yourself an education, son.

Narrator 1 Hammerhead couldn’t ignore White Sharks’ advice. He knew that his best friend the whale came from a good school and he signed up immediately! The next morning the Oyster leant him a travel card and he hitched a ride with a bunch of barnacles and set off to get himself an education.

(Song 4 – Hitchin’ a ride)

Narration 5:

Narrator 2 Hammerhead loved his new school. The first lesson he attended was a dance and movement class, led by an army of herring. They moved so beautifully together, in perfect unison; Hammerhead was very impressed.

(Song 5 – Synchronized swimmers)

Narration 6:

Narrator 3 The next lesson of the day was Health and Wellbeing. Hammerhead learnt a new way to clean his teeth when no Pilot Fish are available! The most important thing he learnt was about dangerous hazards to avoid when swimming, particularly the hook and the net.

(Song 6 – Look out for the hook!)

ACT 2

Narration 8:

Narrator 1 Welcome back to the sea! It’s a Saturday morning and Bottlenose Dolphin sets off to play with the humans near the shore – it was usually the best way to get any attention! Everyone reminded her about the health and safety lesson and to look out for the net. After she’d gone, Orca the whale drifted by, with an important message:

Orca 1 You may call me what you will – Killer Whale or Sea Devil,But I am Master of the seaAnd nobody argues with me.

Orca 2 Communication in the seaThis is my specialityEach creature has a different wayOf saying what they want to say.

Orca 3 Crabs and lobsters snap their clawsTap their feet and grind their jaws.Certain kinds of fishes speakWith grunts and rumbles, pops and squeaks.

Orca 1 Higher up the social scaleThe dolphins, porpoises and whaleWith complex signals can conveyA message many miles away.

Orca 2 And in my studies recentlyObserving human beings at sea,It seems, as far as I can tellThey do communicate as well.

Orca 3 And I have learnt to understandThe language that they speak on land. They say they’re coming with a netTo get a dolphin for a pet.

CHOIR Bottlenose! We’ll save her yet!

(Song 7 – The little fish that got away)

Narration 10:

Porpoise 1 Bottlenose Dolphin swims aloneAround the pool that’s now her home. They caught her and they changed her nameAnd taught her how to play their game.

Porpoise 2 Now ‘Dolly’ is a superstarAnd people come from near and farWhile she performs three times a day. She’s almost human now they say.

(Song 8 – On with the show)

Narration 11:

Narrator 3 Bottlenose Dolphin’s friends were horrified, they had to do something to save her so Hammerhead bravely moved forward to get a closer look. Great White heroically swam in front to protect him but the humans spotted the shark and took fright.

CHOIR (shouts) Look out, sharks about! (& aim harpoons at him) Bang!!

Narrator 3 (cont.) The big bad lad of the ocean lay dying. The mammals and fish had a debate about the late, great White Shark, and everyone had different opinions about whether he was good or bad!

(Song 9 – The late great White Shark)

Narration 12:

Narrator 4 Everyone was mistaken, Great White was only wounded – he wasn’t finished yet, and was determined to save Bottlenose. But they needed help from the biggest creature of all – The Blue Whale. Suddenly, in the distance they could hear the Barnacles singing.

CHOIR Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a Whale.(spoken quietly Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a Whale.gradually getting Hitchin’ a ride on the side of a Whale.louder…..) HITCHIN’ A RIDE ON THE SIDE OF A

WHALE!!Blue Whale WHOOSH!

CHOIR Thar she blows!!!

Porpoise 1 Mighty sister of us allCompared to you, we are so small. We know we can depend on youTo show us what we have to do.

Porpoise 2 They’ve taken Bottlenose ashoreAnd soon they will be back for more.Blue Whale, you are the only oneWho’s strong enough to take them on.

Great White When the enemy come backWe must be ready to attackTeach them the lesson they must learnSo they never forget, and they never return.

Blue Whale Bottlenose has friends out there – Human beings who really care.Let’s take our message to the landAnd make those people understand.

Great White Well! Can anybody tell me where(to the choir) The people are who really care?

CHOIR We’re over here, we’re over here. We’re the ones who really care! We’re over here, we’re over here. We’re the ones who really care!
