Starting salary

£19,437 + per yearAs an officer in the diplomatic service, you would work for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) either in the UK or abroad. You would promote and protect British interests and citizens overseas, and provide advice and support to ministers developing UK foreign policy. If you are interested in international affairs and you are a quick thinking problem solver, this job could suit you well.

To be good at this job you will need to communicate well, and get on with people from all societies and cultures. You will need to be willing to work anywhere in the world.

Entry requirements vary depending on the grade of job you're applying for. To join the FCO at any grade, you must meet the nationality and residency requirements, and pass a strict security vetting process.

Job Description

Work activitiesThe work of the FCO is varied and covers every area where British interests and citizens are involved internationally. You could have political, commercial or consular responsibilities. They could include:

monitoring political and economic developments in other countries representing Britain in government and the media helping British companies to trade overseas promoting investment into Britain assisting British citizens in other countries processing visa applications for people overseas who wish to come to Britain.

Your day-to-day duties would depend on your job grade. For example: policy officers – research issues and help to develop policy and strategy executive assistants – draft letters, handle accounts and invoices, and provide

clerical support administrative assistants – provide clerical support.

As a UK-based policy or operational officer, you might be responsible for one country or geographical area, or for a specific foreign policy issue that affects many countries.

Working hours and conditionsYou will normally work 37 hours a week, Monday to Friday. However, when overseas, your hours and conditions may vary according to the culture and climate of your host country. Some jobs may involve being on call 24 hours a day.

When you first start work with the FCO you would spend between 18 months and three years in London, before your first posting overseas. Most overseas postings last between three and four years.

IncomeAdministrative officers start on around £19,437 a year.

Operational officers start on £21,646 a year.

Starting salaries for policy officers and Fast Stream graduates are £26,363.

All London-based staff are also awarded an extra allowance when working in the capital. Staff working overseas may also be paid additional allowances.

Entry requirementsThe qualifications and experience that you need to join the FCO will vary depending on the role you wish to apply for. You may be asked for GCSEs, A levels or a degree. Whatever your qualifications you would be expected to have relevant work or life experience. For example, experience in management or business administration for policy adviser jobs.

For some jobs you may also be asked for a relevant professional qualification such as the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Accounting Qualification. Job adverts give more details about entry requirements.

As part of the civil service reform you would also be assessed on skills, knowledge and behaviours or ‘competencies’ that fit in with the values of the FCO and the civil service. The competencies that are required for each job role are shown on the job advert.

When you apply you would go through various stages, which might include: filling in an application form based on your skills and life experience taking a written test to check your level of English and maths passing more selection tests like online assessments attending an interview.

Fast StreamIf you have a degree in any subject and gained at least a 2:2, you could apply to the Graduate Fast Stream programme. This is a training scheme that leads to senior management posts. If you wish to apply for the Government Economic Service Fast Stream will need to have studied an economics related subject and gained at least a 2:1.

InternshipsThe FCO Summer Diversity Internship Programme is aimed at graduates and undergraduates from ethnic minorities and under-represented backgrounds. The scheme offers a paid six- to nine-week training placement in a government department and can be a stepping stone onto the Fast Track programme. Work ExperienceIf you’re aged 16 to 18 and interested in working for the FCO then take a look at the Whitehall Social Mobility Internship Programme. It’s aimed at talented students from under-represented groups and is run together with the Social Mobility Foundation.

 OpportunitiesYou would be based in London or Milton Keynes, or in embassies, consulates or High Commissions all over the world. Jobs are advertised in the national press and on the FCO and civil service websites.

There is a clear promotion structure, which is linked to the competency framework and appraisal system. Fast Stream recruits can expect to reach senior level within about five years.

There is a recruitment freeze on jobs within the civil service. Some roles such as the Graduate Fast Track programme and specialist roles are not included in the freeze and are still open for recruitment when jobs are available.
