Barrowline Charity Walk SAVE THE DATE: JUNE BANK HOLIDAY MONDAY: For the past few years we have organised our very own mini- marathon along the beautiful River Barrow from St. Mullins to Graignamanagh and back again (optional)! Over the past five years we have raised over €32,000 for many different local and very worthwhile causes. This year again we are organising the walk in aid of Éist Cancer Support Carlow and Carlow Kilkenny Homecare. The walk will take place on Bank Holiday Monday June 4th beginning in Luke’s Yard (beside pub) @11 am. Your support would be greatly appreciated! All are welcome on the day so let’s get up and get active and help raise some much needed funds for these two great causes! Sponsorship cards are available from Mary Doyle (0879456994), Cathy Kehoe (0860766396) and Kathleen Doyle (0876841631) or from the local pubs and shops or donations welcome on the day!

PUBLIC LIGHTING UPGRADE:Local Cllr Peter Chap Cleere has welcomed the news that almost 100 public lights in different housing estates in Graiguenamanagh are to be upgraded this year to LED lights. Originally, it had been confirmed that Brandon Park, Woodlands, Brandon Crescent, Cottage Gardens and Fairview were all due to be upgraded this year. However, following further representations to have additional lighting upgraded, I am absolutely delighted to confirm that Duiske Crescent, Friars Hill and Cois Na Bearu housing estates are all now to have their public lighting upgraded this year. This will greatly benefit all of the residents and users of these estates.

TURF MARKET CAR PARK AND PUBLIC TOILET PROJECT:Cllr Chap Cleere has expressed his delight to see the above project advancing for the construction of a 15 bay car parking space and also the new plans for the installation of a semi-automatic, wheelchair accessible public toilet. I have been working very hard over the last couple of years to deliver public toilets for the town of Graig, and I am pleased to support this proposed development. I want to thank Kilkenny County Council for their hard work, and in particular Frank Stafford who has done Trojan work behind the scenes to get this proposed project to this stage. The plans are available for inspection in the library in Graig and submission and observations can be made to the council until the 15th June.

I’m sure we are all very disappointed to learn of the retirement of Redmond Ryan from the Tidy Town Committee. Redmond has done tremendous work during his time on the Committee. He has greatly enhanced Graiguenamanagh and its environs. The acquisition of the monks and all the lovely hanging baskets and flower beds should make us very proud of our town and thankful to Redmond in the great part he has played in putting them into place. We know that Breda and her hard working Committee will continue to work for the benefit of the area but I’m sure they would hope that Redmond would reconsider and continue to lead them for some time to come.

now accepting applications for the following courses:

Outdoor Sports and Recreation QQI Level 5This course equips successful candidates with the experience and qualifications to instruct people in outdoor sports, including canoeing, hillwalking and biking among other sports. The area of outdoor recreation is one that has increased in popularity in Graiguenamanagh over the past number of years, and graduates can set up their own business, or work part or full time for existing businesses.

Creative Media QQI Level 5This course includes modules in animation, drawing and digital photography, among other subjects. It prepares students to work in the areas of art and animation, areas that Kilkenny is particularly strong in. It is also a very good course to use as a foundation course to enter Third Level Art courses (we have progression agreements with WIT and Carlow IT). Graduates of this course can also progress to our Level 6 Visual Art course.

Visual Art QQI Level 6This course includes modules in painting, drawing and exhibition techniques, among other subjects. It is a very strong course for those interested in Art, Craft and Design.

Business and Computer Studies Levels 5 and 6This course includes modules in word processing, payroll, bookkeeping, spreadsheets and database, among other subjects. Successful graduates will have the skills and qualifications to go directly into the workplace, in business and office environments. This course can also be used to progress to Third Level courses (again, we have Progression Agreements with Carlow IT and WIT, to make the transition easier for students). It is also an excellent course for school leavers, as a way to gain computer skills before they set off for college.

REMEMBER: ALL COURSES CAN LEAD TO 390 CAO POINTS FOR ENTRY TO COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY

Application forms available online (www.duiskecollege.ie) or from Duiske College Students must have completed a level 5 course in a related area to progress to level 6 Courses begin in September 2017 and finish in May 2018 Eligible students are entitled to the Back to Education Allowance or the SUSI grant

Hurlers Co Op Draw 2018: The Hurlers Co-op draw was launched at the April meeting of the County Board by former Kilkenny Hurler Eddie Keher. The draw which is entering its thirty seventh year provides all Clubs and the County Board with a valuable income stream year-on-year. This year the prize fund is almost €110,000 which will be returned to support the facilities and development programs within the county. The cost per ticket is €50 which equates to €10 per draw; this provides excellent value for money to the customer. Over the past ten years a total of €4.5million has been gathered in income, over half has been returned to clubs. Our usual sellers will be contacting previous and hopefully new buyers over the coming weeks as we endeavor to surpass our sales of recent years.
