CHICAGO – The University of Chicago Presents announces program enhancements to the 2018/19 concert season, its 75th year presenting world renowned artists of chamber, early, and contemporary music and jazz. This season, UChicago Presents also opens a new series, Music Without Borders, featuring contemporary artists from around the world who blend global traditions with modern styling.
Over its history, UChicago Presents (UCP) has developed a reputation for its partnerships with the world-class scholars at the University of Chicago who enrich the concert experience with engaging lectures and discussions with the artists. This season, UCP presents ten lectures preceding concerts on the Classic Concerts Series and the Howard Mayer Brown International Early Music Series. The performance by British consort Atalante on the Early Music Series will feature a unique pre-concert lecture delivered by students from Professor Robert Kendrick’s graduate seminar on John Milton’s encounter with 17th-century Italian music.
The Jazz at the Logan series offers expanded programming with “Chicago Stage at the Logan,” a free, pre-concert performance series by local jazz musicians, presented in partnership with the Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Logan Center for the Arts. UCP, in partnership with the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, has also added a free listening session with saxophonist Chris Potter on the eve of his performance with his Underground Orchestra.
Program enhancements are a key feature of our newest series, Music Without Borders, as well. Prior to each performance, artists on the
series (TM Krishna, Black String, and Rahim AlHaj) will be joined in conversation on stage by distinguished ethnomusicologists from the University. Following each performance, audience members can continue the conversation with the musicians at a reception in the Logan Center lobby (food and drinks provided). The artists on the Music Without Borders series will also participate in additional outreach and education events in partnership with the various global studies centers on campus: the Committee on South Asian Studies, the Center for East Asian Studies, and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
All event details are below. Biographical information for all artists is available on the UChicago Presents website: chicagopresents.uchicago.edu.
Subscriptions are on sale now; single tickets will be on sale beginning August 20, with a 20% discount through September 30.
