EMAS Bulletin: March 2019Dare I mention the 'B-Word'?

No politics here, of course, but just a quick reminder that, judging by what happened after the referendum and spikes since, if we do leave the EU at the end of this month there is likely to be a sudden rise in racist incidents (both in and out of school). Research has continued to show how vulnerable and unsettled pupils from the EU, and their families, feel so please continue to be aware of their needs as the process continues…

New Resources

Just in the nick of time, here is a new resource for the Spring festival of Martisor, celebrated by Romanian and Bulgarian children at this time of the year.

New staffOne of our Romanian BLAs, Alexandra Albu, is leaving us shortly to work at Highbury College and we wish her well with her career going forward. We are, however, already 'on the case' with her replacement and the closing date for the new Romanian post is this Wednesday, 6 th March. There will probably be a couple of weeks where we will, unfortunately, be short-staffed with this language but hope it won't inconvenience you too much. Please contact Ruth if you need anything at all in the interim.

We are also pleased to welcome Rebecca Reeve to the team, as an additional adviser. Becca will be working with the city's Unaccompanied Asylum Seekers, in partnership with the Virtual School, for the rest of this academic year on a part-time basis, mainly assessing these young people in school or college.

Referral Forms once again!Just another quick plea…please can you ensure that you are using the new referral forms that are GDPR-compliant. Unfortunately, one or two schools are still having their referrals returned to them to recomplete, as we are no longer able to accept referrals without parental permission recorded etc. Please contact us if you need any further support and guidance:

And, just in case, here are the forms once again:

SATsPrimary schools: please contact Ruth as soon as you have decided the support you will be requesting for the SATs tests this year. Only a few of you have been in touch so far!

Festivals and EMAS ResourcesFestivals and commemorations for this half term include:

1st March Martisor

5th March Mardi Gras

21st March Purim (Judaism)

21st March Nowruz (Kurdish and Persian New Year)

EMAS has resource packs and/or SACRE resources available for these celebrations. You already also have lots of ideas for assemblies and display material on your memory stick or we can send you a physical pack for immediate (and pain-free!) display.

And finally…We wanted to share some exciting news. Our BLA Team have been shortlisted for the city's first 'Pamodzi Inspirational Women' award in the education category.

https://pamodzicreatives.weebly.com/

We are really proud of them all.

Please keep your fingers crossed on the 7th March (International Women's Day), when Ruth and Shahnaz attend the award ceremony on the team's behalf.
