Thought for this week….by Rev. Canon Trevor Denley
In a recent sermon I heard, the question was posed to us, “why is it that so many people don’t go to church?”
The answer given was that it is because we do! Apparently, in a recent survey, people avoid church because they think those who go are self- righteous and miserable. I really do not think that applies to us,
we do have our hang ups, like all people, but generally I think we are a cheerful and loving group. However I also wonder if we make enough of that ‘outside the building’ It is easy to be a Christian in the safe confines of our buildings, but the challenge comes in taking our faith and all that comes with it into the outside world.
In the same sermon the term ‘difference makers’ was used. As Christians, we are encouraged to be the ‘difference makers both in our society and in our congregations. We are called to be the Salt and Light which can make such a difference to the lives of other people. At our recent Candlemas service our Pastoral teams were commissioned, they have all felt a calling to be ‘difference makers’ in our communities. If there are any of you that feel a similar calling, or one in some other sphere please feel free to discuss it.
At the service we had a fantastic example of ‘difference makers’. The Bristol Deaf Church meets twice a month at St. Aidan’s, and we have been developing close links and a good relationship with them over the past two
years. They have begun to share worship with us, when appropriate, and they joined with us for Candlemass. What a joy to watch them sign in unison the words to the hymns as we sang them. They have their own signers so that they can understand the spoken word and these are real ‘difference makers’. The emotion of watching someone make a good difference to someone else was quite overwhelming. Let’s think of how we can make a difference to the lives of others.
Special notices and upcoming events for all…….A Message from Michelle and Phil
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make our wedding day so perfect. We hugely value all the help and support we received leading up to the day, and on the day itself. We couldn't have done it without you. It was wonderful to have been able to share our special day with our church families, and we were really touched by all the messages of support and congratulations that we have received. Thank you.
