HISTORY OF Saturday Morning Special In the mid 70’s the pastor saw a need for a ministry for people of all ages with special needs. This ministry has continued for 40 years at Albright United Methodist Church in South Connellsville, Pa. There have been several leadership teams that have kept it going all these years. Many people have volunteered their time to help those who attend. They are here around 2 hours. They sing songs, have a storytime and prayer. Then they do a craft that is followed by a meal provided for them by the church. They meet the first and third Saturday September through December and February through May. People come from group homes and individuals living with family also attend. At the last gathering in May they do a variety of things in addition to the regular routine. They play games (with prizes) outside if weather permits. They are a happy group of people who appreciate every little thing we do for them. The Sunday after their last gathering, they are our special guests in the Sunday morning worship service. They sing a few songs which everyone enjoys. This service is followed by a meal in the church dining hall. On Sunday, May 21, 2017 we celebrated the 40th anniversary of this special ministry.

From The Pastor’s DeskAs I write this letter today I am overwhelmed at the negative news that has been broadcasted of late. International tensions over Syria and North Korea; national and political divisions over boarder security and human rights; the murder of a defenseless senior citizen in Cleveland and the racially charged killings in California;

and even tension in our own community, at our school and at the borough building. I shake my head and wonder those words of Rodney King, “Why can’t we all just get along?” I sometimes get on my wife’s Facebook account and scroll through some of the articles and post that people put on. There is an awful lot of spiritual messages being sent. A lot of people letting others know that they stand with Jesus. And the next day I’ll read other post that are racially insensitive, or just downright nasty in nature. And some of it coming from the same people! The Scriptures tell us to take a good accounting of our lives and to measure them up to the life that God calls all of us to live. Paul writes to the Colossians, “Put to death, therefore, whatever in you is earthly: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed (which is idolatry)” (Col. 3:5). Yet goes on to write, “As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must forgive one another…”(Col. 3:12-13). With so much that is negative in the world. And so much around us calling us to turn our backs on the commandments to love God and one another. And with so much tendency to choose the world and sin, why can’t we just take a moment and look for the good that is around us. What is it that causes us to turn toward the negative, the impure the imperfections of others and exploit them? For what? Where is it that I can find the good in others? I need to realize the imperfect in me first. It starts with the fellow I see in the mirror every day. And then, do everything I can to be sure I live as a follower of Jesus Christ. I know I stumble, but not as often as I once did. And when I look at others, I need to realize they are on a journey as well, some are yet to find the path, and some are walking right next to the Lord. The best as I can do is to use the gift of God’s grace to help others on their way and remember that they will have their stumbling times as well. There will always be negative news to broadcast and print. People will still put post on Facebook that will make me cringe. But, when we choose to follow Jesus, we can see others as God sees them. Imperfect yet loved. And that will make us all a little better.

See ya Sunday,

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL June 26-30 at 6:30-8:30 p.m. Glennda Groh will be director. We NEED donations to help with the expenses. Materials were ordered when she got a discount. Anything you could donate would be greatly appreciated. Just make checks out to Albright Church and mark it for V.B.S. 2017. Picture will be Wednesday. Picnic will be Friday.We will be asking for food donations for our local food pantry as a Mission Project. We also will be collecting new socks of all sizes.We also need volunteers to teach & serve. Please let Glennda know as soon as possible if you can help.

Thank YouThank you to those who are faithful to come and assemble the newsletters, and do various other things around the church office. You are truly appreciated.

Many thanks for your donation of $100 on March 21. Your donation will help CACM continue to be an advocate for those in need from the Connellsville area. Here’s an example of how CACM serves as an advocate: Recently we were made aware of an 80 year old, partially-blind man who was a victim of an unscrupulous landlord. He was restricted to one room with no refrigerator and only a microwave to prepare food. He was robbed and mistreated. CACM was able to help him move into safe housing and worked through an agency to help him with healthcare, recreation and transportation. Because of faithful donors like you, we can meet needs of individuals & families who come to us for help. Thank you for your support and may God’s blessings be on you. Chip Rowan, Executive director Connellsville Area Community Ministries

Many thanks to those who helped with the dinners the last week in April for the V.I.M. workers. Thanks to those who donated food for the dinners. Your help is always appreciated. Glenn & Shelly

I want to thank my church family for all the thoughts, prayers, cards, and monetary gifts during my surgeries in February, March, and April. I will be starting physical therapy on Mya 15th and I’ll be going 3 times a week for 4 weeks. I will be returning to work on June 5. I appreciate each and every prayer, and for Pastor Steve visiting me at the hospital. I’m very lucky to belong to Albright United Methodist Church, you all are a great group of people. Thanks again, Vicki StimmellThank You very much to Pastor Steve for remembering me on Administrative Assistant/Secretary’s Day. The flowers are beautiful and the stand is great. God bless you always. I want to thank all my church family for remembering my birthday. Thanks for cards, texts, gifts & the cake. Thanks for being my church family. Elaine Fosbrink

A Special Thank You We would like to thank Pastor Steve for the wonderful words that he spoke at the dedication of Sheila’s grave marker. He spoke so kindly of her and it made a bittersweet day better. It was also Palm Sunday and a beautiful sunny day. We launched a huge bundle of purple balloons and we think we heard Sheila giggling with excitement and covering her rosy red face with her hands! This was the final step in putting her to rest. We sure do miss her. We would also like to thank Bev for all of the hard work that went into getting Tee shirt orders in Sheila’s memory as a fundraiser for the Saturday Morning Special.

Sheila certainly loved her friends. We all miss her tremendously, but her legacy lives on in the kind things that people do in her memory and for our family left behind to live our lives without her, with the assurance that we will see her again one day and, oh, what a day that will be!! And we cannot forget Elsie! Thank you for everything you have done for our family. Thank you for always including Sheila in everything that the junior choir did – even though she was not a “kid” – but a “kid” in her heart and mind. You always made her feel special and never excluded her. We also want to thank Elsie, Donna, Elaine, Denny, Kathy and Kenadee for keeping the Saturday Morning Special going because you knew it would be too hard for our family to deal with right now. We appreciate you all more than you will ever know. Our church is a family --- always there for one another – in good times and in bad.

With Much Love, Dorman & Kay Jacobs and Family

Pastor’s Report May 2017“But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” Luke 12:20 Today I had a wonderful District worship with our, soon to be, new Superintendent, Bob Zillhaver. Bob shared from Luke 12: 13-21 the parable of the Rich Fool. He pointed out in the story how the rich man had gained many possessions. So many he had decided to tear down his barns and build bigger ones to hold them. He was so satisfied with all he had in possession that he was ready to just sit back and live a life of leisure. Not knowing, that that very night he would lose his life. He had stored up treasure for himself, but had nothing to show towards God. Bob pointed out that in this parable, the man spoke only of himself, using the word “I” six times and “me” three times. He did use the word “you”, but only in referring to himself. He was a man standing on an island of his own making, focused only on his task of providing for himself and no other. Too often, we in the church have found ourselves concentrating on ourselves and losing sight of the call of what our ministry should be. Turing our eyes inward only, we become self-centered and begin to believe that what we do is for us alone. We say this is our church and our ministry, even believing that the ministries we may be involved in within the church is sonly ours. But we are fools if we believe this way. This ministry, this church and this calling you have on your life are God’s! All we do is to be for his glory. When we have Saturday Morning Special, it is for God’s glory. When we have a tea time gathering, it is for God’s glory. When we have special music, children’s choir, chancel choir, it’s all for God. When we have fund raisers, give the glory to God. Isn’t it supposed to about him anyway. If we feed thirty VIM workers, is it so we get the at-a-boy at Albright, or is because we have a relationship with the Almighty that compels us to do the greater good? Too many pastors have selfishly caused disarray in the church by pushing their own social agendas that are contrary to the Book of Discipline. And too many congregations have stifled growth among the younger people in our communities by holding on to the status quo of the way we do things around here. Too many “I”’s and “ME’s and not enough about “HE”. We need to see that we are connected to something much larger than ourselves. We are bigger that the walls of the church because God is bigger than the walls of the church. Each of us is his candle shining in the dark places of our world and we all need to recognize that we need to ministry together, supporting one another and reaching beyond our self-made boundaries into the greater ministries that God calls us for.As your pastor, I am making a commitment to become involved in local ministeriam, and to reach out to other pastors for support in my service to God and you. And I encourage all of you to become involved in small group ministries with people that you can build covenant with to help you on your spiritual journey. Be it a Bible study, the tea time, men’s breakfast group, the youth, or UMW, find people to relate with and to grow with. I love being a pastor in God’s church. Whether it be at Albright, Pleasant Hill or in the UMC at large, and I need to remember that it will always be about God more than it will ever be about me or even us.

Let us always move forward so His kingdom may always grow. Pastor Steve
