2013 Americans for the Arts Annual Convention Local Artist & Arts/Cultural Organization Opportunities CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council (GPAC) is honored to be the host organization for the Americans for the Arts (AFTA) Annual Convention and pre-conferences, June 13-16, 2013. Over 1,000 arts leaders from around the country will be visiting our community for four days of professional development and education sessions on topics affecting our field. Please see the convention summary below for more details, or visit www.convention.artsusa.org. Although the event has a national focus, GPAC will ensure attendees have the opportunity to experience our local arts community. Part of GPAC’s work as host is to schedule performances and exhibitions by regional artists. GPAC will also organize “ARTventures” tours to local art sites. We are issuing this call for nominations to assist us with programming. If you or someone you know is an artist interested in performing or exhibiting at one of the opportunities listed below, or would like to offer your arts venue or studio as an ARTventure tour stop for convention attendees, please complete and submit the nomination form by October 23, 2012 to the local convention coordinator, Ashley Paulisick (email and postal mail information is enclosed). Artist nominees are invited to think creatively about ways to incorporate their work, of any discipline, into the opportunities described below. When Saturday June 15 7-10pmWhere Location TBDWho Approximately 130 VIP guestsWhat During the dinner guests will be an eager audience for music dance video art or any other 15-30 min performance or artistic display Artists may be asked to work indoors or outdoors

CenterStage ndash This is the common gathering area central to all convention session rooms where attendees can collect information about Pittsburghrsquos arts scene talk with industry vendors get refreshments and plug in to check their email This is a great opportunity for artists to have close encounters with attendees through performances or interactive art or to simply display their work

ARTventures ndash These 8 -10 educational tours give convention attendees an opportunity to explore our vibrant localarts communities and compare notes with their peers in Pittsburgh

When Saturday June 15 Each tour will be from 1230 - 6pm and will make multiple stops lasting an average of one hour Where Throughout PittsburghWho Approximately 25 convention attendees per tourWhat Guided tours and potentially interactivehands-on activities

GPAC and AFTA reserve the right to alter these opportunities The selection committee will consider all nominees for any suitable opportunities not listed

SELECTIONNominations are open to all individuals groups and organizations regardless of the stage of their career discipline race gender religion sexual

orientation or disability A committee of local artists arts administrators and GPAC staff will review all nominations as well as additional appropriate artists and organizations and make recommendations based on the following criteria Artistic merit The ability of the nomineersquos work to surprise excite andor impress

convention attendees Logistical feasibility (eg length of performance the workrsquos compatibility

for designated spaces cost of set up distance from downtown to a proposed tour stop etc)

GPAC members will receive additional consideration in the selection process

FUNDINGAll selected artists will be paid for their services Amounts will be determined on an individual basis ARTventure tour hosts will be paid existing admission fees or other related activity costs charged to the public at the time arrangements are made for a tour

ABOUT THE CONVENTION

Convention Statement of Purpose The purpose of the Americans for the Arts (AFTA) Convention is to advance the knowledge visibility and engagement of a broad array of leaders involved in arts-based community development

Staff from local and state arts agencies are joined at the convention by other key players in community decision-making including artists arts administrators entrepreneurs elected leaders foundation officers corporate partners volunteers board members patrons activists journalists educators economic developers urban planners architects designers and creative business owners

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council (GPAC) in partnership with state and local cultural and tourism groups will serve as local host for this major national conference attracting 1000+ leaders from the arts and creative business community

George Cisneros is an electronic artist and composer whose artistic language spans experimental technologies with native and historical realities Cisneros was the founder of URBAN-15 and the Third Coast New Music Project He was commissioned by the Office of Cultural Affairs to produce So Now That You Know a convention performance that montages projected media the spoken word and

sonic collage with live musicians Contributing artists include San Antonio Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla and playwright Sterling Houston Bett Butler Ricky Hernandez Steve Garcia Juan Tejeda Eduardo Garza Erik Bosse Jonathon Anderson dancers from URBAN-15 and Ray Santisteban

internationally in generations past has united to amaze audiences once again They include Rita Vidaurri La Calandria Beatriz Llamas La Paloma del Norte Janet Cortez Perla Tapatia and Blanca Rosa Blanquita Rodriguez Mariachi Las Altentildeas an all female group joined them on stage

The Childrens Chorus of San Antonio comprised of youth from across the city and surrounding communities performs regularly with the San Antonio Symphony and has been featured on NBC-TVs Today Show and NPRs Performance Today Its advanced choirs have traveled around the world with featured performances in Scotland Italy Ireland England Canada

Flamenco guitarist El Curro (Willie Champion) is a native San Antonian with an astonishing career in the art of flamenco He spent 17 years as the guitarist for Flamenco Master Joseacute Greco and since then has toured the world as one of the foremost living flamenco guitarists He has garnered multiple solo performances at Carnegie Hall and even

URBAN-15 directed by artist and choreographer Catherine Cisneros is a San Antonio-based arts organization that has been thrilling audiences since 1974 It has combined motion music and media disciplines to create performances and arts education programs for audiences of all ages Known for its high energy and vividly costumed spectacles URBAN-15 has participated in three Presidential Inaugural Parades (Clinton Bush amp Obama) events throughout Mexico and the United States 20 Fiesta Flambeau Parades and special half-time creations for the NBA and NFL

How many nominations can I makeThere are no restrictions on the number of unique nominations one individual can make The selection committee will not take the quantity of nominations for any one artist or arts organization into consideration

Who is responsible for providing insurance coverageAFTA has insurance covering performers the venues attendees and staff No additional coverage is needed by artist However AFTA and GPAC are not liable for damage to artwork These items should be insured by the artists

Will there be an event manager handling technical details Can I use my own sound tech and lighting technicianGPAC and AFTA will have production managers who will coordinate with selected artist and arts organizations Depending on the venue artists and arts organization may have their own technical crew work with AFTArsquos convention crew

Will stage plots be neededYes Stage plots are required to ensure GPAC and AFTA order the proper staging and equipment for all presentations and performances

Who is marketing the events GPAC and AFTA are collaboratively marketing the convention and pre-conferences to both a national and regional audience Further promotion by artists and arts organizations is encouraged

Will there be logos for the presenters to useYes Artists and arts organizations will be provided this material

What costs will artists be responsible forArtists are not responsible for AV and other technical support that will be provided at the convention center for all scheduled programming AV and other basic technical support will also be provided at the opening reception and private dinner While GPAC will work with presenters to accommodate technical needs the artist fee should cover unusual costs above and beyond standard set up Presenters will be responsible for costuming transportation etc

I would like to host a group on an ARTventure tour What costs would I be responsible forGPAC will pay regular admission and activity fees charged to the public Special considerations will be made in circumstances where GPAC has agreed to an activity or performance specifically for an ARTventure tour group but that is not otherwise offered by you or your organization

Will there be comps to convention eventsNo However discounts are available for early registrants students and AFTA members Scholarships will also be available Those interested in attending convention events can register online in 2013 at wwwconventionartsusaorg

orientation or disability A committee of local artists arts administrators and GPAC staff will review all nominations as well as additional appropriate artists and organizations and make recommendations based on the following criteria Artistic merit The ability of the nomineersquos work to surprise excite andor impress

convention attendees Logistical feasibility (eg length of performance the workrsquos compatibility

for designated spaces cost of set up distance from downtown to a proposed tour stop etc)

GPAC members will receive additional consideration in the selection process

FUNDINGAll selected artists will be paid for their services Amounts will be determined on an individual basis ARTventure tour hosts will be paid existing admission fees or other related activity costs charged to the public at the time arrangements are made for a tour

Convention Statement of Purpose The purpose of the Americans for the Arts (AFTA) Convention is to advance the knowledge visibility and engagement of a broad array of leaders involved in arts-based community development

Staff from local and state arts agencies are joined at the convention by other key players in community decision-making including artists arts administrators entrepreneurs elected leaders foundation officers corporate partners volunteers board members patrons activists journalists educators economic developers urban planners architects designers and creative business owners

Will stage plots be neededYes Stage plots are required to ensure GPAC and AFTA order the proper staging and equipment for all presentations and performances

The Childrens Chorus of San Antonio comprised of youth from across the city and surrounding communities performs regularly with the San Antonio Symphony and has been featured on NBC-TVs Today Show and NPRs Performance Today Its advanced choirs have traveled around the world with featured performances in Scotland Italy Ireland England Canada

Flamenco guitarist El Curro (Willie Champion) is a native San Antonian with an astonishing career in the art of flamenco He spent 17 years as the guitarist for Flamenco Master Joseacute Greco and since then has toured the world as one of the foremost living flamenco guitarists He has garnered multiple solo performances at Carnegie Hall and even
