The dictionary will tell you that to civilize means to better, to refine, to replace savage habits by good ones. The savage condition of people when men are little better than beast is called barbarism. So civilization is the reverse of barbarism. But how can we find out if a person or a society is barbarous or civilized? Many people in Europe think that they are very civilized and people of Asia are quite barbarous. Is this because the people of Europe put on more clothes than the people of Asia and Africa? But putting clothes depends on the climate. In a cold climate men put on more clothes than in a hot climate or, it is because a man with gun is stronger than the man without a weapon, and is therefore more civilized than him? Whether he is more civilized or not the man who is weak doesn't dare to tell him that he is not or else he might get shot!A. Answer the following questions. ( 5×1=5)

i. What does the word 'civilized' mean?ii. How is civilization different from barbarism?iii. What do people of Europe think about people of Asia?iv. Do you believe that men with weapon are more civilized?v. What might happen if the weak tell him that he is not civilized?

B. Write 'T' for true and 'F' for false statement.(5×0.5=2.5).

i. The writer believes that European are more civilized than Asians.ii. Civilization is opposed to barbarism.iii. People of Europe think that they are more civilized than Asian people.iv.
