The Third Sunday in Advent

1030am December 16 AD 2018

Preaching of St. John the Baptist – Rembrandt circa 1634-35

“What did you go out into the wilderness to see?

A reed shaken by the wind?...A man dressed in soft clothing? …

A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.

This is he of whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

who will prepare your way before you.’

St Matthew 11:9-10

The Choir sings Matin ResponsesI look from afar, and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth.Go ye out to meet him, and say,Tell us: art thou he that should come to reign over thy people Israel?High and low, rich and poor, one with another,Go ye out to meet him, and say,Hear, O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph like a sheep:Tell us: art thou he that should come?Stir up thy strength, O Lord, and cometo reign over thy people Israel.Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.I look from afar, and lo, I see the power of God coming, and a cloud covering the whole earth.Go ye out to meet him and say,Tell us: art thou he that should come to reign over thy people Israel?

Opening Hymn: 32 O come, O come, EmmanuelOur worship continues on page 1 of the liturgy booklets.

The Collects:  O LORD Jesus Christ, who at your first coming did send your messenger to prepare the way before you: Grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready your way, by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at your second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in your sight, who is alive and reigns with the Father and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness and to put on the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility; that on the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who

is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

First reading: Isaiah 35:1-10This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 80:1-7

2nd part

HEAR O thou Shepherd of Israel, thou that leadest Joseph ’ like a ’ sheep : shew thyself also, thou that ’ sittest up’on the ’ cherubims.2 Before Ephraim Benjamin ’ and Ma’nasses : stir up thy ’ strength and ’ come and ’ help us.

2nd Part 3 Turn us a’gain O ’ God : shew the light of thy countenance ’ and we ’ shall be ’ whole.4 O Lord ’ God of ’ hosts : how long wilt thou be angry ’ with thy ’ people that ’ prayeth?5 Thou feedest them with the ’ bread of ’ tears : and givest them ’ plenteousness of ’ tears to ’ drink.6 Thou hast made us a very strife ’ unto our ’ neighbours : and our ’ enemies ’ laugh us to ’ scorn.7 Turn us again thou ’ God of ’ hosts : shew the light of thy countenance ’ and we ’ shall be ’ whole.Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy ’ Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.New Testament Reading: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5

This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but

I am not not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.Gradual Hymn:

27 Hark the glad sound! The Saviour comes

Gospel Acclamation:Hark, a thrilling voice is sounding

‘Christ is nigh’ it seems to say;‘cast away the dreams of darkness,

O ye children of the day.’The Gospel: St. Matthew 11:2-10Before the Gospel we say: Glory to you, O LordNow when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written,

“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

who will prepare your way before you.’After the Gospel we say: Praise to you, O ChristSermonOffertory Hymn: 29 Hills of the North, rejoice!
