The number of hurricane wind and storm surge claimscontinue to increase as more land-falling hurricanesaffect the U.S. coastlines. Isaias, Irma, Michael, Harvey,Florence, Laura, and others have resulted in billions ofdollars in damages.  With recent storms reigniting windversus water debates, this has become a hot topic onceagain. More than ever, insurance carriers, engineers, andattorneys need reliable weather data and storm surgeinformation to help resolve claims.  Whether it's in theclaims stage or in litigation, accurate information fromreliable sources and reliable experts has proven to beinstrumental.  To prove causation or theories of liability, attorneys and insurance adjusters have found greatsuccess recently in obtaining reliable, hour-by-hourweather information and timelines to help prove a case.   We will use a Hurricane Michael case study involving aWind versus Storm Surge case in Mexico Beach, Floridato demonstrate the proper way to investigate and build acase, no matter which side of the fence a professional ison.  New technological advances help meteorologistsdetermine the timing of the highest winds each hour, how the storm surge heights built each hour, and if oneor both affected the property and when.  Examples ofthe kinds of data used by meteorologists (Surfaceobservations, mesonets, storm reports, storm surge andwater sensors, Doppler radar) and the industry-acceptedmethodologies to make these determinations will beaddressed.  We will also discuss how adjusters andengineers use this data to corroborate their findings andobservations.  Engineering examples from this case andothers will be discussed and how engineers cancorroborate their visual findings to the weather data. For attorneys, the use of public adjusters, insuranceadjusters, engineers, and meteorologists will bediscussed and how they each play a role in documentingand supporting a claim or lawsuit.  Recent issuesinvolving case law and the Daubert Standard will bediscussed and how it has been applied in recent cases.REGISTER
