WIRE AWS CLASSIFICATION

The wires are manufactured to AWS specification AWS 5.34 (see table on back cover). The wires are dual classified in the traditional AWS format as well as in ISO format.

PRODUCTS AVAILABLE

Alloys equivalent to the Inconel® A, 82, 182, 622, 625, 686, and C276 compositions are currently available. Special alloys can also be made depending on volume/pricing considerations. Specific to Alloy 625, a low iron grade (625LI-T1) is also available.

Inconel® is a registered trademark of Special Metals and not affiliated with Stoody Company.

NICKEL BASED FLUX CORED WIRES

Stoody® Nickel Based Flux Cored Wires comprise a family of wires that can be used to weld and clad in those applications where nickel based solid wires for GMAW and stick electrodes for SMAW of equivalent composition are commonly used. The major advantages of the Stoody flux cored wires over the solid wire and stick electrode processes are:

■ Out-of-Position (OOP) Weldability: The Stoody wires incorporate a slag system that enable them to be run at significantly higher deposition rates when welding out-of-position when compared to solid wires or stick electrodes. Typical deposition rates are 1½ - 2 times higher than gas metal arc welding with solid wire and 2-3 times higher than SMAW.

■ Although the wires are designed primarily for OOP welding, they can also be used for welding in the flat/horizontal positions with higher deposition rates and better weld profiles than can be obtained with SMAW/GMAW.

■ Gases used are typically Ar-CO2 mixtures such as (75-25) although pure

CO2 may also be used. These gases are cheaper than gases typically used for solid wire welding such as pure Argon, Tri-mixes, etc.

■ OOP welding can be performed with standard constant voltage power sources. The ability to pulse is not required. 75Ar/25CO2

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

These wires have found the largest usage in applications where they have replaced solid wires and manual electrodes resulting in improved deposition rates and job efficiency.

Examples are: ■ Welding of 9% Nickel steel for LNG tanks ■ Cladding of reactor vessels ■ Dissimilar metal welding ■ Welding of high Molybdenum austenitic stainless steels in

scrubber fabrication

WELDING PARAMETERS/DEPOSITION RATES

Stoody® Nickel Based Flux Cored wires can be welded in a manner similar to stainless flux cored wires. Conventional constant voltage power sources are adequate and there is no need for pulsing. Wires typically operate in the spray mode with 75Ar/25CO2

shielding and semi-spray with 100% CO2. Typically the Ar-CO2

mixture is preferred for OOP whereas 100% CO2

results in better penetration in thick section welds.

Typical deposition rates are shown in the chart. These are significantly higher than those for OOP welding with coated or solid wire electrodes.

PACKAGING

These wires are vacuum packaged and are available on 33 lb (15 kg) layer level wound wire spools.
