THE CHANCELLOR’S MEDAL

for a person who has made a contribution to the common good

Diana June Oliver (formerly Bishop)

Di Oliver trained as a social worker at our sister university of Stellenbosch and later took a higher degree in development studies at the then University of Natal. Social work, in the widest sense, and development work, in the widest sense have been hallmarks of Di’s work ever since. She has worked for and witnessed for the common good: as a social worker, as director of the Cape Town branch of NICRO, as a long- standing lay minister in the Anglican church, as a member of the Cape Provincial Council (1981 – 1986) (alongside Molly Blackburn), in the Black Sash as worker, office bearer and trustee, as a founder member (1987) and still a director of the Community Development Resource Association, in the KwaZulu–Natal Peace Committee, as a Trustee of the Western Cape Hostel Dwellers Trust, as a committee member and co-chairperson of the Dependents Conference, and a member of the Council of UCT. The list continues and is long. Her work has always been for those who have been and are in need. She is a worthy first recipient of the Chancellor’s Medal.

HONORARY DEGREE

Maria Macdiarmid Ingouville BurtonDoctor of Social Science (honoris causa)

In the 50 years since she came to South Africa from the Argentine Mary Burton has committed her exceptional qualities of leadership to the struggle of the people of her adopted Country.

Mary Burton is a legend among legends in the Black Sash, which she served as president from 1986 to 1990; she was a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; she played leading roles in the Surplus Peoples Project, the National Council for Women, and the Institute of Race Relations and the Home for All Campaign. She is remarkable for humility, moral courage, self-effacement at all times and unwavering sense of service.

Mary Burton has seen three out of four sons graduate from UCT, and twenty years after arriving in South Africa she too became an alumna, graduating Bachelor of Arts in 1982. She has served two terms on the Council of the University of Cape Town, and was the Deputy Chair from 1999 to 2005. She was elected President of Convocation in 2010. The Order of Luthuli (Silver) was conferred upon her by President Mbeki in 2003, and the highest provincial award, the Order of Disa, by Western Cape Premier Rasool in 2004, and the Reconciliation Award by the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in 2004.

DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In French Language and Literature:Emmanuel Kayembe KabembaThesis Title: L’œuvre de Pius Ngandu Nkashama dans le champ littéraire africain: Entre détermination socio-historique et conquête de l’autonomie (The place of Pius Ngandu Nkashama’s writings in the field of African Literature: Between socio-historical determination and the conquest of autonomy)

Emmanuel Kayembe Kabemba, born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, obtained a BA and MA from the Department of Language, Literature and Civilisation of the University of Lubumbashi, in which department he later lectured. His research interests are French Language and Literature and Latin and Comparative Literatures. Emmanuel Kabemba’s PhD thesis places the fictional work of DRC author, Pius Ngandu Nkashama, in the African literary field. To do that he conceptualises literary field as threefold: firstly, as the “literary institution” which includes all the rules of production, circulation and recognition that constrain a writer’s work; secondly by seeing literary works as objects in dialogue with other texts, dialogue that indicates affinity with or disjuncture from those others; thirdly by addressing the properties of literary discourse – its capacity to unveil by veiling, or to produce effects of derealising the real. He argues that an authentic writer must necessarily seek autonomy in art. He thus considers Pius Ngandu’s search for artistic autonomy through: firstly, a claim to freedom of thought and expression vis-à-vis pressures from political and economic spheres; secondly, a determination to use French in an Africanised idiom rather than as a foreign language; and thirdly, expressing particular ideological positions that are distinctively expressed by African writers. The study indicates clearly that the main threat to the achievement of autonomy in the African literary field, especially over processes of literary subversion, manifests most clearly in relation to problems that arise when African languages are used as literary media.

Supervisor: Emeritus A/Professor A Wynchank (School of Languages and Literatures)Co-supervisor: Professor JL Cornille (School of Languages and Literatures)

In Hebrew Language and Literature:*Refael KadoshThesis Title: Extremist religious philosophy: the radical doctrines of the Satmar Rebbe

Refael Shlomo Kadosh was ordained as a rabbi at Yeshivat Shilo. He has a Teaching Diploma from Liphshits College, Jerusalem and an MA (with distinction) from UCT. Rabbi Kadosh has been Head of the Yeshiva College of Cape Town, and has served as spiritual leader in several Cape Town communities, including the Herzlia School. Refael Kadosh’s PhD thesis examines the doctrines of Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, known as the Satmar Rebbe, who is regarded as having been one of the most extreme of extremist leaders amongst ultra-orthodox Jews whilst managing to establish and head one of 20th century America’s most powerful Hasidic streams. Highlighting Teitelbaum’s position as an extremist, the thesis suggests that the Satmar Rebbe knew of his positioning as an outlier and chose deliberately to hold on to his extremist stance as a matter of policy. It suggests that he did that in order to ward off the effects of main-stream Judaic orthodoxy’s shifting of the goal posts which, Teitelbaum believed, was a response to a growing principle of tolerance in modern philosophy producing a tendency to become ever less strict regarding religious observance. The thesis uses its detailed study of the Satmar Rebbe to develop a model for understanding extremist religious philosophy. It does that in order to help understand the motivations of extremist leaders of all religions, on the one hand, and the power they exert over their followers on the other.

Supervisor: Dr A Reisenberger (School of Languages and Literatures)

In Historical Studies:Teunis BaartmanThesis Title: Fighting for the spoils. Cape burgerschap and faction disputes in late eighteenth century Cape Town

Teunis Baartman was born in the Netherlands and obtained a Master of Arts degree in History at the University of Leiden in 1988. He is now the Principal of Leyden Properties Company in Cape Town and has long served as member and chairperson of the Woodstock Residents Association. He maintains a keen interest in Dutch history and its Cape connections, and has been researcher for the Cape Town History and the Social Identities in Dutch Cape Town Projects. Teunis Baartman’s PhD thesis argues that burgher identity in Cape Town in the late eighteenth century closely paralleled the dynamics of urban politics in the Netherlands. In particular, he provides evidence to demonstrate that factions of burghers emerged, linked by kinship and economic interests, to challenge the hegemony of the Dutch East India Company. This was clearly apparent in the protest movements of Cape Town burghers in the late 1770s. Through construction of a prosopography (collective biography), Teunis Baartman shows that, far from being a unified group of settlers defined by race or class, late eighteenth century Cape society was marked by a complex and intertwined network of status groups. His analysis demonstrates that the clash of the late 1770s was a dispute between the ruling faction of VOC officials and elite burghers, on one hand, and a faction consisting of prominent rural and urban burgher entrepreneurs on the other. Their tussle for economic and political power, he shows, followed the tradition of many eighteenth century Dutch political conflicts.

Natascha VisserThesis Title: A space for conflict: the scab acts of the Cape Colony, circa 1874-1911

Natascha Visser was schooled at Bellville High School, Cape Town and majored in English, History and Philosophy for her BA (UCT). She was consistently on the Dean’s Merit List. She completed a BA(Hons) in History (with distinction) at UCT. Her Masters registration in 2008 was upgraded to a PhD in 2010. Natascha Visser’s PhD thesis examines the protracted conflict between the Cape Colony’s Department of Agriculture veterinarians and small stock farmers over the aetiology and best means to combat scab. The veterinarians made it compulsory for all farmers to dip their sheep and goats to eradicate the disease. Yet, despite education campaigns, migrant (‘trek’) farmers remained sceptical of scientific explanations and resisted dipping their stock. The veterinarians ridiculed the farmers, constructing the struggle as one between progress and ignorance, and creating an impression that their opponents were perversely blind to their own economic interests. Subsequent historians too have construed migrant farmers’ resistance to dipping as symptomatic of their ‘pre-modern’ culture. Natascha Visser’s thesis refutes that explanation. She draws on current debates in anthropology and the sociology of science to contextualize the conflict between scientific knowledge and trek farmers’ purported ‘traditional’ knowledge. She demonstrates the misguidedness of distinguishing veterinary knowledge from trek farmer knowledge on epistemological grounds. Her critique of nineteenth century veterinary knowledge of scab shows that the official aetiology was inaccurate and obscured the difficulties of curing scab. It also shows that, because eradicating scab was beneficial to and affordable by wealthier wool farmers only, anti-scab legislation was driven by class interests.

Supervisor: A/Professor L van Sittert (Historical Studies)

Drusilla Siziwe YekelaThesis Title: Unity and division: aspects of the history of the Abathembu Chieftainship, c.1920-c.1980

Drusilla Yekela (née Lusu) was born in Mthatha and matriculated at Healdtown Institution. She holds a Teacher’s Diploma, a BA and BA(Hons) in History (with distinction) all from Fort Hare; and a MA from Rhodes University (1988). She has lectured full-time at Fort Hare University for 37 years. Drusilla Yekela’s thesis investigates the relationship between the `traditional’ politics of the Great Place of abaThembu, on one hand, and `liberation’ politics on the other, as expressed in the contest between the Thembu paramount chief, Sabata Dalindyebo, and Kaiser Daliwonga Matanzima, a descendant of the Right Hand house of Mthikrakra. After showing how King Dalindyebo (1885-1920) compromised the indigenous legitimacy of the Thembu paramountcy that he occupied, the thesis analyses the instability of that paramountcy in the years 1928 to 1953, before Sabata’s Dalindyebo’s accession. It then shows how the apartheid-era Bantu Authorities Act reinforced divisions in the chieftainship before Kaiser Matanzima undermined the abaThembu paramountcy and re-invented the junior house. Matanzima’s ascendancy and the termination of Sabata’s paramountcy are shown to have led Sabata to align himself with liberation politics. Drusilla Yekela’s thesis is a careful unravelling of a complex history and adds significantly to our knowledge of chiefly politics in the Transkei.
