DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD

The Distinguished Teacher Award, given one only to an individual, recognises teaching at any or all levels by a member of the faculty that has made a significant and lasting impression on students.

Previous recipients in the Faculty of Commerce have been:

1986: DE Kaplan (GSB)2001: N Nattrass (Economics)2006: J Burns (Economics)2008: LC Smith (Econommics)2009: CJ Fourie (Education Development Unit)

The following member of the Faculty of Commerce has been chosen for this award in 2011:

Timothy Charles Chabot Low

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistical Sciences

Timothy Low teaches two subjects notoriously challenging and even frightening for most undergraduate students – mathematics and statistics. His students are identified as being ‘at risk’ in the Commerce Faculty’s Educational Development Unit and yet out-perform the students in the course as a whole. He achieves this by adapting to the changing needs of a diverse cohort of students; this adaptive teaching accommodates students who are learning mathematics and statistics in English – their second or third language.

His students tell of a teacher whose success comes from his availability to them (both on campus during his extensive consultation hours and after hours through a range of social media platforms), his imaginative and innovative use of new media in teaching, and his ability to create a classroom environment where students can develop confidence to succeed. His energy and warm nature foster relationships with students which allow them to be comfortable in grappling with challenging material, and his enthusiasm and persistence inspire his students to seek a deeper understanding of mathematics and statistics, rather than just enough to pass the course.

Tim Low has pays careful attention to how his courses are designed ensuring an integrated structure of teaching, learning, application and assessment. In both his teaching and his course design he is exemplary; this example inspires and changes the lives of his students, peers and the nature of education at this institution.

DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Business Administration: Mlenga Golden Jere Thesis Title: Advertising to Low-Income Consumers: Portrayals of Women in Drum Magazine Advertisements 1981-2010.

Mlenga Jere is senior lecturer in marketing at the UCT Graduate School of Business. He originates from Zambia and holds an MBA (Marketing) from Stirling University (UK), a PGDip Higher Education and Training from Rhodes University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Zambia. Mlenga Jere’s PhD thesis examines the portrayal of women as message sources in advertisements appearing in Drum magazine in the period 1981-2010, an important period that captures South Africa’s transition from Apartheid rule to more formal recognition of gender equality. Using content analysis techniques, multiple coders assessed images of women in randomly selected advertisements for the presence of physical and cultural characteristics. Controlling for economic and product category effects, these data were analysed using multilevel latent class modelling. The best-fitting model identified five types of portrayals of women in the advertisements that vary in their incidence across two types of years. Women in the five portrayal types differ in physical and cultural characteristics: the Ambitious Woman, the Emerging Woman, the Traditional Woman, the Modern Woman and the Community Woman. The pattern of portrayals in the two types of years reflects meaningful differences in cultural emphases as well as the prevalence of demeaning and empowering portrayals of women: Years of Emphasised Agency and Years of Emphasised Connectedness. Implications for marketing theory and practice, limitations, and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Maurice Kenneth Mutowo Thesis Title: A resource-based view of the firm: a path dependency investigation into the sources of sustainable competitive advantage – an empirical study of the University of Rhodesia, 1945-1980. Maurice Mutowo obtained a BA (Honours), MA and MBA degrees from the University of Zimbabwe. He has been studying at UCT, in the Graduate School of Business since 2007. He is the Director of the Graduate School of Management, University of Zimbabwe

Maurice Mutowo’s PhD thesis uses a grounded theory approach to investigate the sources of sustainable competitive advantage of the University of Rhodesia (UR). His thesis defines and traces the origins of path dependency, empirically verifies its prevalence with respect to the evolution of UR, and shows its contribution to management theory and practice. He establishes that the

evolution of UR was path dependent and influenced by the dynamic patterns of initial conditions, increasing returns, self-reinforcement, positive feedback and lock-in. Some of the enduring characteristics of UR that define its competitive advantage include the British influence, the system of external examiners, and the elitist and multi-racial character of the institution. The thesis develops a robust conceptual framework which emerges from an empirical application of path dependency to the evolution of UR. By applying path dependency to the development of UR, his thesis will help managers better distinguish, analyse and understand processes of institutional change. It will improve managers’ understanding of organisational transitions – especially of complex organisations operating in business environments characterised by high unpredictability and complexity.
