WHICH CELL BOOSTER IS RIGHT FOR YOU

First, determine where you will use the cell booster (home,office, car, boat, RV) and if your primary goal is to amplifyvoice, data or both. If maximum signal on data is yourprimary goal, choose the DA4000 direct connect amplifier.If your primary goal is to use a wireless cell booster(repeater), you must adhere to the distance and structurerequirements between the inside and outside antennas(Antenna Separation) and have a usable cell signal at thelocation of the external (outside) antenna.*

Do you have an existing cellular signal to boost?Existing cellular signal strength of -70 to -90dB (easily complete calls) at the location of the outside antenna is required to use awireless repeater. If the cell signal outside is below -90dB and as low as -100dB (difficult to complete calls) a direct connectamplifier should be used. An amplifier or repeater cannot amplify a cell signal that is not present. A direct connect amplifieris recommended for use in areas where there is extremely low outside cellular signal or to enhance data and Internet connections.In addition, optional directional and higher gain antennas will give increased performance to your amplifier or repeater in lowsignal areas (see page 12).

Should I use a direct connect amplifier or a repeater? What is the difference?Both amplifiers (cellular boosters) and repeaters (wireless cell boosters) boost cell phone signals up to 3 watts and will deliversimilar benefits. A direct connect amplifier will provide additional range up to 50+ miles from a cell tower. A wireless repeateroffers a range up to 30 + miles from a cell tower.

How does a direct connect amplifier work?Your cell phone is physically connected directly to the amplifier by an adapter cable. The amplifier then connects to an outside cellantenna. (cable & antennas sold separately) Multiple cell phones can be used with a combiner.

How does a wireless repeater work?An advantage of a wireless repeater is that no physical connection is required to your cell phone; however, a stronger outside cell signal(-70 to -90dB) is required and specific installation guidelines for outside and inside antennas must be followed. The outside antennareceives the signal from the cell tower, the signal is amplified by the repeater unit and repeated to your cell phone through the insideantenna. This technology also allows the use of multiple cell phones and carriers simultaneously. (wireless repeaters are soldas complete systems).

PowerMax™ Marine/RV Repeater Systems include a low-profile 426-PW interior panel antennaoffering flexible mounting options. The multi-band antenna provides 65o coverage in thehorizontal plane with a vertical beam width of 55o. New from the engineering team at Digital Antenna are cellular repeaters designed specificallyfor boats and RVs. The new PowerMax™ Wireless Marine and RV wireless cell boosters offerincreased system gain while decreasing inside and outside antenna separation requirements.

The 70dB system, model 4KSBR-50M, provides a larger enhanced inside coverage area andrequires a minimum 25' antenna separation. The 50dB system, model 4KMR-30M, providesa smaller enhanced inside coverage area and requires a minimum 12' antenna separation. AllPowerMax™ cell phone boosters are FCC & IC approved to amplify all North American cellphone carriers except Nextel or iDEN.

We make installation easy for our recreational customers on land and sea by including astainless steel 1”- 14 threaded mount for easy mounting of the external omni-directionalantenna. The 50dB and 70dB gain boosters are sold as complete systems including a 3watt cellular repeater, 9dB directional inside panel antenna with 15’ cable, 18” external9dB cellular antenna with 1"-14 threaded mount, low-loss coaxial cable with attachedconnectors and a 12 VDC power converter.

Which antenna is right for you?

What type and length of boat do you have (sailboat, powerboat, yacht, commercial vessel)?

Choose an antenna based upon available mounting location. A 4’ or 8’ antenna works well for many applications including a T-top.Larger antennas such as 16’ and 24’ models must be side-braced approximately 3’ to 4’ from base.

Is your antenna for communication, navigation or entertainment?

Although antennas look identical, they are very different inside. Each antenna is designed and manufactured for specificfrequencies. VHF: 156.8 MHz, Cellular: 800/850 & 1900 MHz, SSB: 2-30MHz, AIS: 159 MHz. The correct antenna must bematched to the equipment’s frequency.

What is ‘gain’ in an antenna?

Gain is measured in decibels (dB). The illustration to the left shows the radiation pattern of three antennas with different gain. Asgain increases, the more directed the RF energy becomes, resulting in reaching a greater distance. Your antenna choice should bebased upon your application, taking into consideration the rocking or keeling of your boat.

Why does an 18” cellular antenna have 9dB gain and an 8’ VHF antenna have 6dB gain?

Due to the physics of the signal’s wavelength, an equivalent 9dB gain antenna for VHF would have to be almost 16’ in length. Thewavelength for cellular frequencies is much shorter than VHF.

How does line-of-site affect communications?

While lower frequencies (SSB) allow for reliable long-range communication, frequencies above 100 MHz do not follow thecurvature of the earth and are limited to line-of-site (the antennas must “see” each other). To achieve the longest range, theantenna should be placed as high as possible.

What makes an antenna reach a greater distance?

The advanced ground system internal to all Digital Antenna marine antennas allows 4.5dB through 10dB gain antennas to have agreater range in any sea conditions. The figure to the left shows the effect that a ground system has on a vertical antenna.

Note that by increasing the ground system efficiency, useful RF power is actually directed closer to the water surface whereit is needed. Most well designed 5/8 wavelength 6dB antennas will transmit the same distance in the sky; however, theground efficiency determines the actual communication range at sea level.

Cable plays one of the most important roles in the antennainstallation. Signals are transmitted through the cable andthe goal is to maintain as much of the signal as possiblewhen it reaches the antenna. Digital Antenna cables featureexclusive low loss, tinned braid, foil shielded cable witha UV stable jacket for maximum signal transmission.

How long is the cable run?

Cable length must be calculated before determining the cable type. The cable run must not be kinked, crushed, or have a bendradius less than 10 times the cable diameter. Also the cable must be clear of moving objects. Cable should be laid as straight aspossible and away from metal. Bends or sharp curves decrease performance and may cause drastic signal loss.

What is return loss?

Return loss is the portion of a signal that is lost due to a reflection of power caused by any discontinuity of the cable. Signalreflections are caused by anything that changes the shape of the cable. Cable kinks or twists, connector insertions/instal-lations and splices are major factors contributing to the total signal efficiency of the installation.

What frequency will you be using:VHF, Cellular, WIFI?

As frequencies increase, there is considerably more signal loss in the cable. Cable characteristics vary by manufacturers andshould be compared. (Conductor material, dielectric material, shield type, % coverage and additional foil shielding). A 60% braidcoverage would have more signal loss than 95% coverage. A cable with a foil shield is more efficient and effective than one without.Choose the appropriate cable based upon minimum dB loss for your frequency and cable run length.

What connectors should I use?

Frequency range will determine the connector series to be used. Mini-UHF, SMA, TNC and Type N, are all rated up to and beyond 2.5GHz with type N being rated the highest at 11 GHz. UHF connectors such as PL-259 and PL-258 are rated to 300 MHz and cannot beused at cellular frequencies of 800 and 1900 MHz. Each connector or adapter inserts approximately a .5 dB loss. Never splice cable!Cables can only be extended using the appropriate connectors and cable. Refer to the cable loss chart.
