DEDICATION

JAMES BONNER MacRAE

F r o m the t ime w e entered Lincoln Un ivers i t y in Sep t embe r o f 1965, the C lass o f ' 6 9 heard the myths , legends and rabble about the then Dean o f Students, James Bonner M a c R a e . T h e " B o o m e r ' s " reputat ion began, howeve r , long be fo re , in 1947, when he returned to his A l m a M a t e r to accept the admin is t ra t i ve post he held for twenty -one years .

W e listened to the myths , legends and rabble , and being f reshmen, w e were some-wha t a w e d and apprehens ive about a man w h o was k n o w n for his skil ls in verbal re-buke and satir ical wit . W e saw the Dean stroll about the sparsely populated campus, hands behind his back, eyes alert and al ive; and we chuckled and somet imes marve l l ed at his pearls o f w i sdom.

H e establ ished h imse l f as a fr iend and advisor , but he was never lax in his firmness w i th those students w h o overs tepped their bounds. T h e s e we r e our impressions o f the man and his o f f i c e .

T o d a y James B. M a c R a e heads the Educat ion Depar tment and serves as coord ina-tor for the Un ivers i t y ' s n ew l y instituted January Inter im P r o g r a m . Since his under-graduate days , which ended in 1924, he has ever been a loyal son o f L inco ln. H i s loyal -ty is mani fes ted in the admi rab l e wo rk he has done as an educator and administrator for the past f o r t y - f i v e years.

IN MEMORIAM

ROGER ALLAN JOHNSON

Born: December 3, 1947 Died: July 20, 1962

Roger A l lan Johnson, to whom this page is respectful ly dedicated, was born De-cember 3, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. W i t h aspirations o f becoming a doctor, Roger was a conscientious student who was able to mix who lesome rabble with aca-demic excellence. " F l e a " as he was af fect ionate ly called by those who knew him well — had a knack for gett ing involved in deep intellectual debates. H e took advan-tage of every opportunity to challenge the intellects o f those around him, whi le at the same t ime establishing f i rm human ties with the Lincoln Commun i t y .

T h e ideas and ideals o f Roge r represent the aspirations and strivings o f the Class o f '69. For us the past four years have been years o f intellectual maturation and human understanding. In our endeavors to experience li fe to its fullest and learn about the wor ld we live in, we have gained great insight into our own inner beings and have torn down unrealistic facades which serve to alienate brother f rom brother; hence we are assured that the prospect o f our weaning a successful path through the constricting perplexities of l i fe are quite good.

A s when we entered the gates of Lincoln in 1965, we leave in 1969 with some appre-hension about the future, but we feel quite secure in knowing that we have aquired the essential tools for living. Just as the memor ies o f Roge r A l lan Johnson wil l linger in our minds and hearts eternally, we feel conf ident that the Class o f ' 6 9 will not dissi-pate as we g o our separate ways, but that we wil l jo in Lincoln 's endless procession o f splendor making the wor ld a better place for all men to live and ful f i l l themselves.

PRESIDENT WACHMAN

T O T H E C L A S S O F 1969

Y o u wil l never be the same again. A n d Lincoln Univers i ty has changed because o f your presence on this campus over the past four years. Y o u represent, l ike the Univer-sity, a great diversity o f human beings. Y e t , you have a fine spirit o f unity, and your collective influence has been great , as have your individual contributions to the Univer-sity.

The r e has never been more emphasis on the value of education than in the past four years. T h e ferment and the changes in the f ie ld o f education have been very substan-tial. T ru ly , educational institutions in general , and Lincoln in particular, have been " w h e r e the action i s " during your stay on the campus.

Y o u have seen significant calendar and curriculum changes during the past four years. Y o u have been participants in the period of the greatest g rowth of the Co l l ege , and of the initiation and f lower ing of residential co-education. Y o u have seen student partici-pation in the decis ion-making process at the Co l l e g e increase f rom a strong base, and you have been a part o f the continuous strengthening o f the curriculum to make it con-stantly more relevant to the t imes in which we live and to the needs of the Lincoln stu-dents.

Y o u are the largest graduating class in Lincoln 's history, and one o f the most hetero-genous.

Y o u have brought a great deal to Lincoln, and I am sure that you are taking a great deal with you. W e all hope you will c ome back often, as individuals and as a class, and we wish you the very best in your careers in the future.

Fai thful ly yours,

Marv in W a c h m a n President

ARMSTEAD OTEY GRUBB (1903 — 1968)

" D r . A rms t ead G r u b b c a m e to Lincoln Univers i ty in 1937, over 32 years ago. H e was born in Kansas in 1903. His col lege was Princeton, and his advanced degrees were f r om the Univers i ty o f Pennsylvania. H e also studied abroad, in France. H e came to Lincoln as an Assistant Professor o f Spanish and French and as Registrar , and served in these capacit ies until 1940. In addition to his teaching, he also served as L ibrar ian for nine years f rom 1940 to 1949. A f t e r spending the next e ight years pr imar i ly in the classroom as Professor o f Romance Lan-guages, he was called upon to serve as Ac t ing President o f the Univers i ty , a post which he occupied with great distinction for three years, f r om 1957 1960.

This was a period in which there was great soul-searching at Lincoln and e lsewhere in this country concerning the role o f this institution like Lincoln Univers i ty . T h e r e were more than a f ew who predicted at this t ime and some prescribed, the end o f this institution; but Dr. Grubb fo l l owed the words o f his predecessor, the late W i l -liam Hal lock Johnson, by saying, ' The r e wil l a lways be a L incoln ! '

Dr. Grubb 's love and dedication to this institution was demonstrated pr imari ly by deed, since he was a man of relatively f ew words. His words, his thoughts, his contributions to Lincoln Universi ty , to all o f us, and to many others wi l l remain and continue to live. Our hearts g o out to his daughter and our thanks g o to G o d for giving this fine, selfless and gracious man to us for such a long and fruit ful pe r i od . "

Brothers and Sisters,

Lincoln Universi ty has tradit ionally been a contributor to the Black communi ty through her graduates. A s this new class o f graduates move out into the wor ld , we must neither be prepared to rest on the laurels o f our predecessors, nor to g o about the task o f making our contributions in the same ways they did. A new crop o f situations have arisen, and they call for new solutions. T h e winds o f change have taken new directions, and we must help them to their fruitful conclusions by our understanding of and participation in their direction.

T h e Black struggle for l iberation calls for you, T h e Class '69!

Sincerely yours,

FINAL REFLECTIONS Wri t ing an a f t e rword to a book that is supposed to capture experiences o f four years is a lmost as di f-

ficult as trying to capture four years on about 158 pages. I feel odd because so many experiences must go unrecorded, and so many feelings can not be related in material terms.

Lincoln Universi ty has meant so many things to us the last o f the O l e School . W e saw and experi-enced our beloved " P i o n e e r W o m e n , " the weekends, the frats, clubs, classes, exams, and above all, " r a b b l e . " A l l these things and more will help make us what we are to become.

T o my classmates and advisors, I say thanks! It has not all been fun and games, but it has been mean-ingful to create this yearbook . Aga in , I thank you for your help.

T o the Class o f ' 7 0 , I leave you best wishes, the little o f f i ce in room 303 University Hal l , and the leograph (that you may have t w o for the 1970 edition o f the L I O N . )

Sincerely,

Jerrome N . Duncan, I I Edi tor - in-Chie f
