PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEDear Friends:

Welcome to Purchase College and its Performing Arts Center. This summer we are delighted to welcome back The National Youth Orchestra of the United States and celebrate our continuing partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute in this endeavor. It is wonderful to have these young people on our campus during the quieter summer months.

The forthcoming 2017/2018 season will be an exciting one as we celebrate the Center’s 40th Anniversary. The SITI Company, Purchase Alum and MacArthur Genius Fellow dancer/choreographer Kyle Abraham’s A.I.M. dance company, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Branford Marsalis Quartet and Suzanne Farrell Ballet’s final performance are among the outstanding performances to be enjoyed in the coming season.

The Performing Arts Center plays a vital role in the academic program of Purchase College and its School

of the Arts with its Conservatories of Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, and Art and Design. It serves as the college’s incubator, offering an important venue to students for their practices, performances and perfection of skills. During the academic year, you can visit our Passage Gallery directly across from the entrance to the Performing Arts Center, and the Dolly Mass Gallery in our School of Visual Arts to see the work of our visual artists and film and new media students. A stroll on the plaza should include a stop at the world renowned Neuberger Museum of Art, which is open throughout the year.

You may notice the construction site that abuts the Performing Arts Center. We look forward to the opening of our new Center for Film, Media and Theatre, a building that will become the exciting intersection of study in the arts and liberal arts. While the arts are an important component of the Purchase College mission, our Schools of the Liberal Arts and Sciences and Liberal Studies and Continuing education offer a well-rounded education, featuring interdisciplinary study, online courses and a variety of new majors to accommodate all learners.

We are committed to creativity and innovation in all aspects of the Purchase College experience. The campus community continues to attract more students who choose to live on campus, participate in our academic and performance programs and our vast array of extracurricular activities. We invite you to become a part a part of this community by attending our vast array of productions and exhibitions, courses by our outstanding faculty, lectures and sports events.

Our sincere appreciation to all of you who have been generous to the Performing Arts Center, the Neuberger Museum of Art and the students of Purchase College. Your continued support of our programs is vital to the mission and livelihood of our institution.

Thank you for coming,

Thomas J. SchwarzPresident, Purchase College

Greetings and Happy Summer from all of us at The Performing Arts Center!

I am thrilled to have each of you here in our Concert Hall for what will be another fantastic appearance from the National Youth Orchestra. For the better part of the last 18 months many of you have heard me speak about a new vision here at The Performing Arts Center, that of an incubator. In many ways the National Youth Orchestra is the best poster child I could ask for to exemplify that vision. You are seeing a wonderful concert tonight, but it is made possible by the fact that NYO has been here for weeks working, inhabiting our halls, our rehearsal spaces, our shops, even our dorms. It is a tremendous partnership and I’m grateful to everyone at Carnegie Hall for making it possible.

We are in the habit of considering the first events of each Fall the opening of our season,

but I truly believe that it is tonight’s wonderful event that kicks off our season. This season being our 40th Anniversary, I couldn’t think of a better way to start. So as you enjoy the music I hope you will have good thoughts on the fantastic season to come. The 40th Anniversary Season plants us firmly in our new vision with a curatorial eye towards honoring our history and will prominently feature the latest cutting-edge projects from artists that have been critical to our 40 years of success. It is in every way a step into the future, with a nod to the past. It is loaded with world premieres and special visits from renowned artists who have played pivotal roles in our great history.

So enjoy tonight, and please consider it a promise of the many wonderful moments that await in our full 2017-2018 season!

Marin Alsop is an inspiring and powerful voice in the international music scene, a Music Director of vision and distinction who passionately believes that “music has the power to change lives”.

Her outstanding success as Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) since 2007 has been recognized by two extensions in her tenure, now confirmed until 2021. As part of her artistic leadership in Baltimore, Marin Alsop has created bold initiatives that have contributed to the wider community and reached new audiences. In 2008 she launched ‘OrchKids’,

which provides music education, instruments, meals and mentorship to the city’s neediest young people.

Alsop took up the post of Principal Conductor of the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) in 2012 becoming Music Director in July 2013, with her contract now extended to the end of 2019. Alsop led the orchestra on European tours in 2012, 2013, and in 2016 to prestigious venues and festivals such as BBC Proms, Edinburgh International and Lucerne festivals.

Marin Alsop now conducts the world’s major orchestras, with recent and forthcoming highlights including the Chicago, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, La Scala Philharmonic, Budapest Festival and Danish National Symphony orchestras, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. She has a close relationship with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE), appearing with both most seasons. She is also Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre in London. In September 2013, Marin Alsop made history as the first female conductor of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms in London which she returned to conduct in 2015.

She returned to the Proms in 2015 and 2016 to conduct the OAE in an all-Brahms programme and Verdi Messa da Requiem on period instruments. 2015/16 highlights included a historic return for an American musician to Cuba, conducting Lang Lang and the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. In March 2016, Alsop celebrated Carnegie Hall’s 125th anniversary conducting Bernstein West Side Story in the Knockdown Center, a restored factory in Queens, and she will form a significant role in the world’s centenary celebration of Leonard Bernstein. In 2016/17 Alsop returns to London for performances with the BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic orchestras and brings the Britten-Pears Orchestra to Southbank Centre before returning to a residency in Aldeburgh’s Snape Maltings.

Marin Alsop is the recipient of numerous awards and is the only conductor to receive the prestigious MacArthur Fellowship, given to US residents in recognition of exceptional creative work. She was only classical musician to be included in the Guardian’s “Top 100 women”, celebrating the centenary of International Women’s Day in 2011. Alsop is an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, London and the Royal Philharmonic Society and was recently appointed Director of Graduate Conducting at the Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute.

Alsop’s Prokofiev cycle on Naxos with OSESP continues, following an extensive Naxos discography including a notable set of Brahms symphonies with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Brahms Ein Deutsches Requiem with the MDR Leipzig Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra and a highly-praised Dvorák series with the BSO. Other award-winning recordings include Bernstein’s Mass (Editor’s Choice, Gramophone Awards 2010) and Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto (Grammy Award 2010). Alsop has also recorded for Decca Classics, Harmonia Mundi and Sony Classical.

Born in New York City, Marin Alsop attended Yale University and received her Master's Degree from The Juilliard School. Her conducting career was launched when, in 1989, she was a prize-winner at the Leopold Stokowski International Conducting Competition and in the same year was the first woman to be awarded the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize from the Tanglewood Music Center, where she was a pupil of Leonard Bernstein.

Christopher O’Riley (host/piano) performs around the world and has garnered widespread praise for his untiring efforts to reach new audiences. In addition to hosting From the Top and appearing with top orchestras and festivals around the world, O’Riley is also an interpreter of some of the most important contemporary popular music of our time. He lives by the Duke Ellington adage, “there are only two kinds of music, good music and bad.” A prolific recording artist, O’Riley has recorded the music of Beethoven, Stravinsky, Scriabin, Liszt, Ravel, Gershwin, Debussy, and John Adams, as well as his own arrangements of music by Radiohead, Elliott Smith, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana. He has collaborated for many years with

flutist Sir James Galway and cellists Matt Haimovitz and Carter Brey. He is a recipient of top prizes and awards from the Van Cliburn Competition and the Avery Fisher Career Grants. He is a graduate of New England Conservatory in Boston.

Joanne Robinson (announcer) has a broad arts and communications background. She has performed and toured with several children’s theater companies and served on production teams of two children’s television programs. A long-standing member of the From the Top team, Joanne has worked in many capacities, including managing the organization’s website, blogging about her travels with the radio show, writing copy, and designing promotional and publication materials. When she is not on tour with the production team, she can be found in From the Top’s Marketing & Communications department, where she serves as Senior Graphic Designer.

WHO'S WHO

ABOUT THE ORCHESTRAEach summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the finest young musicians from across the country (ages 16-19) to form the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA). Following a comprehensive audition process and a three-week training residency at Purchase College, State University of New York, with faculty made up of principal players from top professional US orchestras, these remarkable teenagers embark on a tour to some of the great music capitals of the world, serving as America’s dynamic music ambassadors.

Launched in summer 2013 to great acclaim, the first-ever National Youth Orchestra of the USA presented concerts with conductor Valery Gergiev and violinist Joshua Bell to enthusiastic audiences at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; St. Petersburg and Moscow in Russia; and in a live televised performance at the BBC Proms in London. The 2014 orchestra, led by American conductor David Robertson with violinist Gil Shaham as soloist, made its debut at Carnegie Hall in New York City, followed by a coast-to-coast US tour, from Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts to Chicago’s Millennium Park, ending at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. In 2015, NYO-USA traveled to China, performing at seven of the country’s greatest concert halls with conductor Charles Dutoit and pianist YUNDI, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing. Most recently, in summer 2016, the orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall with conductor Christoph Eschenbach and pianist Emanuel Ax before embarking on a European tour with conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Denis Matsuev with stops in Amsterdam, Montpelier, Copenhagen, and Prague.

In 2018, NYO-USA will return to Asia for a tour with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
