A qualitative chemical analysis is carried

out in order to identify the chemical species within a mixture, without definition on the quantity, mass, or concentration of

each species identified. Such analysis is useful if the quantities of the species

found within a mixture are of little or no importance, but each must be shown to

be present or not present.

QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS

A quantitative analysis not only identifies

the physical presence of a chemical species within a mixture, but also determines the quantity, mass, or

concentration of it. Such analysis is often applied when concentrations of individual

species are important, such as with water testing, air pollution and emissions

testing, or soil analysis.
