Take the “Stüva” of the Hotel Fex (page 25), for example. The traditional panelled restaurant with roaring open fire serves regional specialities – such as the authentic Fex fondue – along with delicious wines. The Berghotel Ofenhorn (page 51) also pays homage to gastronomic tradition in its own way. This hotel dating from the belle époque showcases regional Valais dishes that reveal the influence of neighbouring Italy.Guests enjoy a completely different palette of flavours at the Gasthof zum Hirschen (page 56). The “Historic Hotel of the Year 2014” celebrates the traditional country cuisine of the Zurich Region using the freshest natural produce.

22 Müstair: Hotel Münsterhof Ô

21 Klosters: Romantik Hotel Chesa Grischuna Ã

Designed in 1938 as a total work of art and built by local craftspeople, this small hotel soon gained a reputation as a hideaway for film stars. Now a member of the Romantik group, the family establishment has preserved its heritage with great care – hence the award of a special prize by ICOMOS in 2000. The combination of traditional architecture and contemporary art is exceptionally creative – like the fine cuisine.

+41 (0)81 422 22 [email protected]

Guests soon fall for the period charm of the Münsterhof, located in the se-cluded Val Müstair. The hotel, now run by the fifth generation of the Meyer- Tschenett family, boasts a tradition of hospitality dating back 125 years. Fine antiques adorn the rooms of the traditional Engadin building. Guests in room 14 enjoy a special experience of history: the bed bears the date 1771, and Napoleon himself is said to have slept in it.

22 Swiss Historic Hotels.

A journey in a tower room.

Josef Giger, great-great-grandfather of the current owners, opened the Waldhaus on 15 June 1908 as the hotel of his dreams: a fairy-tale castle with towers and parapets, oriel win-dows and little balconies, towering over the village of Sils and the tree-tops. A hotel in grand style with a discreet breath of luxury.

The walls of the tower room – and in-deed all the other rooms – keep their secrets. Visitors today hear little more about the many illustrious guests of the Waldhaus beyond the fact they have stayed. But then discretion is the byword of this hotel, founded over 100 years ago and still owned by the same family.

If the walls of the tower room at the Hotel Waldhaus in Sils Maria could speak, they would no doubt have plenty to say. For exam-ple, that Hermann Hesse described the lake-strewn plateau of the Upper Engadin as “probably the most beautiful landscape with the most powerful effect on me”. Or that Marc Chagall fell in love with the magical quality of the light here at first sight.

23

Between 1949 and 1961, the Nobel prize-winning author Hermann Hesse spent 370 days at the Hotel Waldhaus. The annual “Sils Hesse Days” are among the region’s many popular cultural events.

If the décor was the height of fashion at the time, today it recalls all the charm of the long-gone belle époque. The brothers Claudio and Patrick Dietrich – the fifth generation of the family to run the hotel – ensure that traditions are maintained and that guests arriving at the Waldhaus em-bark on an enchanting trip in time. Highlights include the salon with its “Welte- Mignon” mechanical piano, which replays music from 100-year-old piano rolls recorded by famous pia-nists; the velvet-covered armchairs in the rotunda; the waiters bearing the hotel’s original period silver cutlery; and the marble staircase with its thick carpet leading up to the tower room.

Speaking of style: this shows not only in the décor, but in a philosophy of hospitality revealed on arrival. Guests are not merely checked in, but warmly welcomed – by a member of the family that owns the hotel.

The tower rooms of other Swiss hotels would also have many stories to tell – although none will give up their se-crets. Guests invariably fall for their period charm, however, just as they fall in love with the glorious views. The sight of the sparkling waterfall from the Grandhotel Giessbach, for example, the impressive mountain scenery around the Romantik Hotel Schweizer-hof in Flims, the view of shimmering Lake St. Moritz from Badrutt’s Palace Hotel: the perfect match in every case, sure to melt the heart of any guest.

The Hotel Waldhaus evokes all the charm of a bygone age – from the stylish dining room to the impres-sive staircase with period chandeliers, backdrop for many a wedding photograph.

32 Zuoz: Hotel Crusch Alva Ô

“You experience magical moments here without having eaten any magical mushrooms.” So wrote Albert Hof-mann, the first person to synthesize LSD, in the guest book. Was he think-ing of the fine cuisine, with local speci-alities still prepared in copper pans? Or the wines maturing in oak barrels in the Carolingian cellar? Or simply the period charm of this medieval manor house, richly decorated and bursting with history?

Behind the impressive facade of the Crusch Alva, guests discover a long tradition of hospitality. Dating from about 1500, the building is among Switzerland’s oldest visitor accommo-dation; originally it also served for the administration of justice.
