3 Brienz: Grandhotel Giessbach Õ

Built in 1873 in the typical Swiss wood style of the day, this grand hotel occupies a commanding position overlooking Lake Brienz, close to the thundering Giessbach Falls. Switzerland’s first funicular carries guests from the hotel’s own steamer jetty up to the panoramic terrace. With its period ambiance, elegant rooms and gorgeous grounds, the “Historic Hotel of the Year 2004” embodies an enchanting oasis of tranquillity.


4 Dürrenroth: Romantik Hotel Bären Ô

Three historical Emmental buildings make up this delightful country hotel, which together with the late-baroque church and village square forms an architectural ensemble of national importance. The dining rooms of the “Historic Restaurant of the Year 2000” offer an atmospheric setting in which to enjoy the exquisite cuisine in ele-gant style; the modern seminar centre provides a thrilling contrast.

6 Kandersteg: Landgasthof Ruedihus Ô

The Ruedihus was built in 1753 as a private house, a fine example of the traditional craftsmanship of the Bernese Oberland. After construction of the Lötschberg railway line, it serv ed as a guesthouse until renovation in 1990. Today, the historical restaurant serves the best of Swiss cuisine while the authentically furnished guest rooms radiate period charm: no wonder the hotel won a special ICOMOS award in 2000.


Built in 1932 as lodging for construc-tion workers, the hospice by the Grimsel Pass looks like a fortress in the bare mountain landscape. After a tasteful conversion, the protected building is now a welcoming hotel for all who appreciate nature and stylish relaxation. Comfortable guest rooms, atmospheric lounges, an impressive old wine cellar and authentic regional cuisine compliment dramatic views over the Grimsel reservoir.

8 Kleine Scheidegg: Hotel Bellevue des Alpes

7 Kiental: Hotel & Pension Waldrand-Pochtenalp

Guests won’t find a mobile phone sig-nal here but they will encounter blissful tranquillity. This chalet-style “nostalgia hotel” was crowned “Historic Hotel of the Year” in 2016; from May to Octo-ber, it offers an authentic hotel experi-ence as enjoyed by past generations. The 19 simple rooms, the restaurant serving home-made regional speciali-ties and the idyllic panoramic terrace evoke the charm of alpine tourism in the early-20th century.


The guest list is as impressive as the views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau: all the great mountaineers as well as celebrities from cinema, the arts and public life have stayed at the “Historic Hotel of the Year 2011”. Built in 1840, it was last renovated in 1948 and has undergone sensitive restoration ever since. The hotel itself has starred in films including “The Eiger Sanction”; the 1920s interiors are as charming as ever.

10 Wengen: Hotel Falken Ô

Historical lounges, stylishly furnished guest rooms and an elegant dining room from 1908 preserved in its original condition: the Falken is one of the few hotels that largely retain the atmosphere of the belle époque. Built in 1894 at an elevated location in the resort with glorious views across the dramatic Lauterbrunnen valley, the welcoming hotel promises guests the perfect combination of period charm and modern comfort.


9 Mürren: Hotel Regina Mürren

A grandstand view of the mighty peaks of the Jungfrau Region awaits guests at the Regina, superbly located in the heart of the resort of Mürren at an altitude of 1,650 metres. Built in 1897 in the stately Swiss hotel style of the day, the Regina is full of historical charm: highlights include the period dining room, sun terrace and spacious veranda, plus a lively programme of cultural events.

11 Les Diablerets: Hôtel du Pillon Ô

Restored with loving attention to detail in 2007 and furnished with fine period antiques, the Hotel du Pillon has retained all its original charm. It was built in 1875 at a scenic location on the old pass road up to the Col du Pillon, to welcome British visitors eager to explore the nearby glaciers; today, the 12-room hotel continues to captivate guests with spectacular views of the mountains and up to Glacier 3000.


12 Montreux-Veytaux: Hôtel Masson Ô

Originally the home of winemakers, the Masson was once surrounded by vineyards. Today, a pretty garden with fruit trees is the only reminder of the hotel’s origins. Thanks to its award- winning state of preservation, the Masson is listed as part of the region’s cultural heritage. With 33 individual rooms and a superb panoramic loca-tion, the hotel is one of the most charming in Montreux, as well as one of the oldest.

13 Bergün: Kurhaus Bergün

Rural charm meets aristocratic grandeur at this hotel, which brings 450 years of history vividly to life. Originally a farmhouse, the Chesa Salis grew into a palatial home before its conversion into a stylish hotel with 18 individually furnished rooms – some panelled in pine, others in elegant Biedermeier style or featuring ornate stucco ceil-ings. The “Historic Hotel of the Year 2015” is also a gastronomic triumph.


Bought by its guests in 2002 and restored step by step, this art nouveau gem in a UNESCO World Heritage landscape is now a successful mix of hotel and holiday rental accommoda-tion. The restaurants serve alpine specialities, the ballroom is one of the finest in Switzerland and the lounges display a thrilling wealth of original art nouveau features. No wonder the Kurhaus was named “Historic Hotel of the Year 2012”.

15 Chur: Romantik Hotel Stern Õ

Immortalised in Thomas Mann’s novel “The Magic Mountain”, the Schatzalp is an art nouveau gem; the hotel grounds are among the most exten-sive in Switzerland. Superbly located on a plateau above Europe’s highest town – yet only four minutes away by funicular – the former sanatorium enjoys breathtaking mountain views. Guests savour stylish dining to match at five restaurants in and around the “Historic Hotel of the Year 2008”.


Located in the heart of the Alpine city, the Stern has been the first choice of discerning travellers for 300 years. This welcoming hotel full of charm is now a member of the Romantik group, richly decorated with works by the Graubünden artist Alois Carigiet. Guests savour local delicacies and superb regional wines in cosy panelled dining rooms; the “Veltliner Weinstube im Stern” enjoys cult status among gour-mets.

17 Fideris: B&B Türmlihus

18 Flims: Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof Õ

Built in 1903 in art nouveau style, the Schweizerhof soon won renown as a place of culture, attracting guests including Albert Einstein, Empress Zita and Marie Curie. The hotel itself found fame when film director Daniel Schmid gave it the lead role in “Hors saison” (“Off Season”). In 2008 the fourth generation of the owning family took over the hotel, now part of the Romantik group, preserving all its belle époque charm.


Guests enjoy the strongest sense of history in the “Himmel” bedroom – which translates as “sky” or “heaven”. Each of the five individually styled rooms, however, has a story to tell. Idyllically situated in the peaceful mountain village of Fideris, the “Little Tower House” and its lush garden are full of cosy corners in which to relax, promising a uniquely restful stay. The generous breakfast of homemade delicacies is a highlight.



19 Flims: Waldhaus Flims Alpine Grand Hotel & Spa

20 Guarda: Hotel Meisser Ã

Built in the 17th century and decorat-ed in typical local “sgraffito” style, this hotel has been run by the Meisser family for five generations. The large gardens and sunny terrace enjoy superb views of the Lower Engadin mountains. Both the terrace and the dining room dating from 1902 – a list-ed structure – offer charming settings in which to enjoy the fine cuisine pre-pared from regional produce. The vaulted cellar houses a small museum.


Framed by impressive mountain scenery, the award-winning Waldhaus Flims promises a hotel experience at the highest level. Underground pas-sageways connect the three accom-modation options (Grand Hotel, Villa Silvana and Chalet Belmont), the spa-cious luxury spa (2,800 sq. m) and the restaurant/concert pavilion built in art nouveau style. A further highlight: the vast hotel grounds, among the largest in Switzerland.

22 Müstair: Hotel Münsterhof Ô

21 Klosters: Romantik Hotel Chesa Grischuna Ã

Designed in 1938 as a total work of art and built by local craftspeople, this small hotel soon gained a reputation as a hideaway for film stars. Now a member of the Romantik group, the family establishment has preserved its heritage with great care – hence the award of a special prize by ICOMOS in 2000. The combination of traditional architecture and contemporary art is exceptionally creative – like the fine cuisine.


Guests soon fall for the period charm of the Münsterhof, located in the se-cluded Val Müstair. The hotel, now run by the fifth generation of the Meyer- Tschenett family, boasts a tradition of hospitality dating back 125 years. Fine antiques adorn the rooms of the traditional Engadin building. Guests in room 14 enjoy a special experience of history: the bed bears the date 1771, and Napoleon himself is said to have slept in it.



A journey in a tower room.

Josef Giger, great-great-grandfather of the current owners, opened the Waldhaus on 15 June 1908 as the hotel of his dreams: a fairy-tale castle with towers and parapets, oriel win-dows and little balconies, towering over the village of Sils and the tree-tops. A hotel in grand style with a discreet breath of luxury.

The walls of the tower room – and in-deed all the other rooms – keep their secrets. Visitors today hear little more about the many illustrious guests of the Waldhaus beyond the fact they have stayed. But then discretion is the byword of this hotel, founded over 100 years ago and still owned by the same family.

If the walls of the tower room at the Hotel Waldhaus in Sils Maria could speak, they would no doubt have plenty to say. For exam-ple, that Hermann Hesse described the lake-strewn plateau of the Upper Engadin as “probably the most beautiful landscape with the most powerful effect on me”. Or that Marc Chagall fell in love with the magical quality of the light here at first sight.

Between 1949 and 1961, the Nobel prize-winning author Hermann Hesse spent 370 days at the Hotel Waldhaus. The annual “Sils Hesse Days” are among the region’s many popular cultural events.

If the décor was the height of fashion at the time, today it recalls all the charm of the long-gone belle époque. The brothers Claudio and Patrick Dietrich – the fifth generation of the family to run the hotel – ensure that traditions are maintained and that guests arriving at the Waldhaus em-bark on an enchanting trip in time. Highlights include the salon with its “Welte- Mignon” mechanical piano, which replays music from 100-year-old piano rolls recorded by famous pia-nists; the velvet-covered armchairs in the rotunda; the waiters bearing the hotel’s original period silver cutlery; and the marble staircase with its thick carpet leading up to the tower room.

Speaking of style: this shows not only in the décor, but in a philosophy of hospitality revealed on arrival. Guests are not merely checked in, but warmly welcomed – by a member of the family that owns the hotel.

The tower rooms of other Swiss hotels would also have many stories to tell – although none will give up their se-crets. Guests invariably fall for their period charm, however, just as they fall in love with the glorious views. The sight of the sparkling waterfall from the Grandhotel Giessbach, for example, the impressive mountain scenery around the Romantik Hotel Schweizer-hof in Flims, the view of shimmering Lake St. Moritz from Badrutt’s Palace Hotel: the perfect match in every case, sure to melt the heart of any guest.

The Hotel Waldhaus evokes all the charm of a bygone age – from the stylish dining room to the impres-sive staircase with period chandeliers, backdrop for many a wedding photograph.


24 Poschiavo: Hotel Albrici

Occupying a palatial 17th-century building on Poschiavo’s main square, this gem of a hotel charms guests with its nostalgic atmosphere and warm Italian-style welcome. Careful conser-vation of the magnificent rooms won the Albrici an award from ICOMOS. The bedroom windows offer views of the villages’ comings and goings; the restaurant serves delicious local cuisine including home-made Pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta).

23 Pontresina: Hotel Saratz À

The Saratz deftly blends nature and architecture, Engadin hotel tradition and modern design to create a uniquely refreshing ambiance. Built in 1865 in period style in the heart of Pontresina, the four-star-superior hotel has evolved organically to stylish effect. Careful renovation and an elegant extension won plaudits for the hotel, which has retained its historical charm – notably in the exquisite art nouveau dining room.

A remote hamlet in a hidden mountain valley offers an idyllic setting full of authentic charm for a wonderfully relaxing break. The intimate hotel with its six welcoming rooms has all the character of a traditional Engadin mountain farm; the chalet in belle époque style, with its two suites, serves as an annex. Guests enjoy specialities and wines from the region in the cosy panelled restaurant and on the delightful sun terrace.


This gem of a mountain hotel dates from the early days of alpine tourism. Originally built in the 1850s in the spa complex of St. Moritz Bad, it was dismantled around 1900 and its components transported by horse and cart to the Val Fex – which even today is free of motorised traffic. The hotel still embodies the same pioneering spirit; the atmospheric restaurant is known for its delicious cuisine based on regional produce.

Historic furniture and panelling, elegant parquet, stairs and floors of local granite, fine wall paintings, ornate stucco decoration and ances-tral portraits: this palatial home built in 1630 and converted into a hotel 100 years ago is bursting with charac-ter. The “Historic Hotel of the Year 1998” in the picturesque village of Soglio charms guests with its 15 rooms, grand halls and exotic gar-den, planted with giant sequoias.

This icon of Swiss hotel hospitality towers above the mountain village of Sils-Maria, as full of grandeur as the day it opened. Yet behind the imposing facade, the Waldhaus offers a refreshingly warm welcome: the hotel has been run by the same family, now in its fifth generation, for more than 100 years. The excellent cuisine, fine wines and a lively cultural pro-gramme all display the same personal attention to detail.

The “Terrace on the Lake”, opened in 1873, has the perfect location – not only for the views. The jetty for the Lake Lucerne steamers is metres away, as is the station for the steam trains up the Rigi. Continual restoration over the years, with great respect for traditional craftsmanship, has preserved the hotel’s period charm.

In the furthest village of the hilly, wooded Malcantone region, the for-mer post office of Astano was already recorded as an “albergo”, or hotel, in 1888. To this day it has retained its historical character, typical of the region. The restaurant serves home-made Ticino specialities along with regional wines; the extensive gardens, with swimming pool and tennis courts, promise active recreation as well as pure relaxation.


The “Mountain of Truth” above Ascona boasts inspiring views and a long history of attracting innovative thinkers. The hotel built in Bauhaus style in 1929 by Emil Fahrenkamp, notable for its pure, uplifting design and panoramic restaurant, stands in lush grounds with exotic plants, a Zen garden and Japanese tea house.
