Server Room Layout
Server room layout criteria: Enough space for required servers Hot/Cold aisle layout must control airflow Make cooling system run more efficiently Secure Provide clear and safe access to
equipment
Size and shapeWith total of 340 racks needed we had two options One large server room with total required racks Divide up rack into smaller rooms
Decided on the four separate server rooms.
Each room containing 90 Racks - 6 Aisles which have 15 Racks in them.
From research smaller rooms are more common.
AC units need a higher air supply temp to be more efficient.
Fire or leaks. Structural layout.
Office Space Layout
Office/Facility space must: Maximise natural light Located so heat from server rooms
can be utilised in colder months
Cooling requirements
Low end temperature- 18 °C High end temperature- 27 °C Low end moisture- 5.5 °C Dew point High end moisture- 60 % Relative
humidity 15 °C Dew point
5MW IT Equipment requiring cooling
Cooling method
Hot/ cold aisle containment Raised floor Perforated tiles Fan driven air flow CRAC units
Cooling Method
Cold aisle containment Less risk of hot air
recirculation The hot and cold air do
not mix
Free cooling
Outdoor temperature enables the use of free cooling
Cold air drawn in to accomplish cooling instead of mechanical cooling system
Use of air- side economiser Hot air exhausted can be
mixed with air intake if outside temperature is too cold
Free Cooling
Improve PUE Improve energy efficiency Reduce Co2 emissions
The waste heat can be used to heat office space

Cost = £1,200,000
Total energy = 433MWh
Materials Structure:• Low Carbon Concrete • Panel system• Steel• Timber
Glazing• Triple Glazing with Low Emissivity
Insulation• Structural Vacuum Insulated Panel• Architectural Wall Panel
Sample Glazing
Triple glazing with Low E Coating
Argon Fill
U-value = 0.6 w/m2kSolar Transmittance = 0.56
Fabric Loss
0.14 for walls (1408m²)0.1 for floor (3056m²)0.13 for roof (3056m²)0.6 for glazing (247.3m²)
*sizes are still under consideration
Fabric loss formulae : Q= U*A*ΔT
Walls: 2432 Wattts Floor: 5654 Watts Roof: 5654 WattsGlazing: 1830 Wats
Ventilation Loss
Pv = (Cv*N*V*ΔT)/3600
Assuming the volumetric specific heat capacity of air is Cv=1200 J/m3K Inside temperature: 20°C
Average loss for office = 1623 kWhAverage loss for server room = 678 kWh
Hybrid ventilation
Natural source of air flow (Wind)
Combination of natural and mechanical ventilation
Extremely efficient and economical
Server Heat Recycle
Cold climate Heating system needed No need to install
another heating system minimizing local
environmental warming
